I don't like the idea of new dk.
Its starting to get cumbersome with cameras and trackkng points.

But those axis are very important so whatever the way to achieve that.
Guess new screen is nice tho.
I love oculus. I will buy everything they make even tho im poor sob Laughing

This.

But I hope they will find another system for position tracking.
Not that trackIR system doesn't work, it actually works very well.
But this will introduce some boring issues in term of mobility and environment requirement.

If the sun enter your room : game over
Even a simple candle in the background can mess the IR tracking.

Also I am a bit worried with that OLED screen, OLED means tons of $$$.

Time will tell.

Sure thing is, I want one ... NOW ! Very Happy

Maybe true about the tracking, but at least now it is integrated.

Reports are that the OLED screen is a lot better.

If by integrated you mean, they stuck reflective dots all over it, then yes, it's integrated. It still relies on an external camera for the tracking, ala trackir or freetrack.

What i mean is it will all come as one unit with no need to run out and buy other peripherals.
I'm trying to find the bright points here and be optimistic.

im a little bummed that they went for a non integrated tracking, im sure it performs better but as silent_lurker said it introduces enviroment problems wich weights more heavily atleast for me

Uhhh, that would be accomplished by the internal gyroscope/accelerometer. The dots and camera are for POSITIONAL tracking.

And your point is? Are you saying I can turn around and still get positional tracking? No, you can't. Also, part of the appeal, at least for me, was the fact that this was somewhat portable. Now it isn't. Stuck back in front of the desk.

There are dots on the adjustment buckle on the back of the rift.

It's only a prototype unit anyway and not necessarily indicative of the final unit. They said the camera might not even be a part of the final system. Only that it was the easiest way at the time.

It'd be nice. They did it 20 years ago with just internal gyros/accelerometers in the VFX1. You occasionally had issues with drift but it wasn't bad.

But the rift was never designed to be a system that moves around too much. Cables get in the way and can be a hazard unless you have some sort of rig that routes them from up top (yes, I busted my ass at least once tripping over cables with the VFX1). And untethered you are going to need battery power and more hardware to make everything wireless. Unless you're walking around with a backpack with a laptop and extra batteries (yes, this has been done, I know). It's just not practical yet.

I am ok with axis as those are is current dk. Dont feel like need much of positional tracking. Surely not for the price of fudging with camera.
Just give me fantastic screen and fov.
Of all the positional axis only forward movemwnt is useful to look at Guages and so on

From what I've heard the 1080p prototype that was shown at PAX was still very low res to look at.

I wonder how demanding it'll be if the final release is like 1440p or higher. It needs to render two images right? And if you want it at 120hz with some AA... ugh.

Yes I have. Laughing

Here is something else for you to ignore and respond to with a duchy smily.
What happens if I use something like STEM System and decide to duck behind a virtual shield or just cover my face with arms or anything else that might obscure cameras vision? And how come two, or four (there might be two more behind the ears as seen in the frame dodger2020 posted) LEDs are good enough in the back when you need 20 or so in the front?

Doing a quick google search shows I'm not the only questioning this positional tracking "solution". I don't think it's a proper one, only the one they found most cost effective.

Instead of having a camera, they could use a small IR tracker that tracks the positions dots, kinda like we do with our 3d scanners

I see you've formulated your point better in later posts, but the way you posted that question, I could give two serious answers:
- You can turn 180 degrees (although if you can just turn your head 180 degrees, I want to see that, involves some torso twisting as well for me Razz) with the Rift, that's always been possible.
- If your question was specifically about the positional tracking: yes, you still can. Because there's LED's on the back too.

Clearly you've figured that out by now, so:

They already said this was a temporary solution just for demo purposes.

This might shed some light on the "issue". Someone with a dev kit, please verify this.

Those aren't LED's or reflectors. Its the tiny Oculus logos on the strap holder. Sad

http://www.reddit.com/r/oculus/comments/1unf0i/proof_there_are_tracking_leds_on_the_back_of_the/

As far as this not being the final solution, I'm willing to bet it's here to stay. Anything else would raise the cost too much.

Oculus founder Palmer Luckey:

Quote:
Cost has always been at the crux of the entire Oculus platform, if the hardware is not affordable, it might as well not exist. We made sure this is a low-cost solution without sacrificing any quality.

I'm sure the OR team is on top of things and this will be a great product when it hits the shelves. However I'm rightfully disappointed, and would gladly dish out extra hundred or so for a different solution, like a magnetic field used with Razer Hydra.

Yea same exact thing on mine, its the eye logo, they are black, but shiny compared to the rest of the buckle.
