Maybe true about the tracking, but at least now it is integrated.
Reports are that the OLED screen is a lot better. |
If by integrated you mean, they stuck reflective dots all over it, then yes, it's integrated. It still relies on an external camera for the tracking, ala trackir or freetrack.

What i mean is it will all come as one unit with no need to run out and buy other peripherals.
I'm trying to find the bright points here and be optimistic.

im a little bummed that they went for a non integrated tracking, im sure it performs better but as silent_lurker said it introduces enviroment problems wich weights more heavily atleast for me

And your point is? Are you saying I can turn around and still get positional tracking? No, you can't. Also, part of the appeal, at least for me, was the fact that this was somewhat portable. Now it isn't. Stuck back in front of the desk.

It'd be nice. They did it 20 years ago with just internal gyros/accelerometers in the VFX1. You occasionally had issues with drift but it wasn't bad.
But the rift was never designed to be a system that moves around too much. Cables get in the way and can be a hazard unless you have some sort of rig that routes them from up top (yes, I busted my ass at least once tripping over cables with the VFX1). And untethered you are going to need battery power and more hardware to make everything wireless. Unless you're walking around with a backpack with a laptop and extra batteries (yes, this has been done, I know). It's just not practical yet.

I am ok with axis as those are is current dk. Dont feel like need much of positional tracking. Surely not for the price of fudging with camera.
Just give me fantastic screen and fov.
Of all the positional axis only forward movemwnt is useful to look at Guages and so on

From what I've heard the 1080p prototype that was shown at PAX was still very low res to look at.
I wonder how demanding it'll be if the final release is like 1440p or higher. It needs to render two images right? And if you want it at 120hz with some AA... ugh.

Instead of having a camera, they could use a small IR tracker that tracks the positions dots, kinda like we do with our 3d scanners

Yes I have.
Here is something else for you to ignore and respond to with a duchy smily. |
I see you've formulated your point better in later posts, but the way you posted that question, I could give two serious answers:
- You can turn 180 degrees (although if you can just turn your head 180 degrees, I want to see that, involves some torso twisting as well for me ) with the Rift, that's always been possible.
- If your question was specifically about the positional tracking: yes, you still can. Because there's LED's on the back too.
Clearly you've figured that out by now, so:
Quote: | Doing a quick google search shows I'm not the only questioning this positional tracking "solution". I don't think it's a proper one, only the one they found most cost effective. |
They already said this was a temporary solution just for demo purposes.
