Maybe those rumors about Doom 4's problems were true and something else happened recently to send him over the edge. Made him think there was no point to continue staying with the company.

Kind of sad to hear the news. Just like when 3D Realms closed down. Both companies had lost their way, but their games were part of my childhood.

At least at Oculus he'll be motivated again, because I'm pretty sure that's the reason things haven't exactly been as they used to be.

Yeah, i'm pretty sure it ended on Quake 3.
I could say Doom 3 too... If it didn't release soon after Half-Life 2 and Far Cry.

Actually, I think LucasArts was significantly ahead of id Software during that time period. Some amazing adventure games + things like X-Wing/Tie Fighter.

Still, id used to be great.

I don't think any of the LA games during that period, as good as they were, did as much for pc gaming... Hell, gaming PERIOD, as id did with quake, the most important pc game ever.

And yes, you can quote me on that Razz

Other than engine, Carmack's contribution is minimal. I deliberately didn't mention the game itself (I liked it), but the E3 2002 demo (corrected correctly by derpje) because that was really breathtaking at the time. In 2004 it was less impressive and wasn't as detailed as the E3 files (technical things such as self-shadowing, audio techniques, etc.).

You are insane fucker! RAGE was awesome. Its a classic first person shooter without useless (and broken) gameplay mechanics. The bad thing about RAGE is its ending, besides that the game is good.

Pixies's question was about id, not Carmack, though.
But even if we judge only Carmack's quality of work in Doom 3 by the time of its release it still wasn't bellow average. Far from it.

Carmack won't stop his Quakecon keynotes, even if Bethesda decides they don't want him anymore.

If I were running Bethesda I would integrate Rift support in the games and would invite Carmack to talk about it. Why not? Free publicity for the games!

Imo Doom 3 was pretty much average. Not a crap game, but definitely not anything special beyond its name and pedigree.

Honestly, I think it was a sudden shock to a lot of people because we had gotten used to Nowadays Shooters® - it was a shock, and a huge disappointment to many, to go back to the Doom-style shooter. That's all RAGE was, it was Doom in a pretty skinsuit with some incredibly rudimentary loot/crafting mechanics. Shitty ending and too many invisible walls but overall a fantastic game (IMO) Smile

Well for me the DOOM 3 experience was much superior to the RAGE experience. The only thing that RAGE got going was the satisfying shooting, but the game felt lacking in everyhting else for me. And there's no way I could use the adjective "pretty" to refer to it after checking all those awful textures up close while playing. It was so distracting that it broke any chance of immersion Facepalm Add to hat that the game felt "incomplete" in many ways (which DOOM 3 defintitely didn't). Also, I know many people see the DOOM 3 story as pure crap, but I personally liked it a lot as told by those datadiscs you could find, it had a sense of epicness in it, though I have to admit that the "final bosses" were pretty lame and unimaginative. But at least the game didn't feel incomplete, if anything maybe it was a bit longer than it should've been.

rage felt lacking because id basically made toy box. they let everyone who had an idea, even the fucking janitor and the guy that brings the lunch bagels, get their ideas in the game. thats why it was such a mess, because there was so much fluff and uncohesive and unfocused content, drowning out the fantastic game at its core.

if only a grown-up had been there to supervise the children, the game could have been id's mega hit comeback...

such a shame... id is like a tired old dog. hes got a lot of heart, and in his prime he was magnificent - hes still faithful and theres still goodness inside, but now he just shits all over the rug, and it takes him forever to move even an inch... Sad

...sorry... im just afraid its time Sad

With all the id games released after Quake 3 I have a strange love-hate relationship. They were a big disappointment for me, mainly because of the several unfulfilled promises both gameplay and graphics-wise, yet I still quite liked them since the shooting part was..well, id-ish.

Doom 3 was supposed to be ground-breaking, a neverseenbefore milestone, and turned out to be "only" a decent standard boo-based fps with some visual candiness here and there. Entertaining, but absolutely nothing that made me go in awe (plus what Leo mentioned made me even more disappointed).

Same for Rage, it was supposed to be the ultimate post-apocalyptic game, with finally an epic story and sense of freedom with them megamegaman textures, and all I got was another classic shooter with a not-so-pleasant consolish aftertaste, and yet some outdated tech involved. The shooting part/animations and level design (despite the severe lack of interactivity) were the only two aspects that kept the game afloat for me. Enough to enjoy it? yes..and no at the same time. Razz Paradoxically I enjoyed Quake 4 (Single player, since the multiplayer was..brrr) much more than id's shooters. But that was because of good ol' Raven Software.

Not really. Or have you forgotten the "revolutionary" 4-player multiplayer? How badly it handled open spaces? How the bodies had to disappear immediately? And how you now faced up to 5 enemies at a time compared to Doom 2's dozens?

It looked great for the time of the first E3 demo. But that's about it. Escape from Butcher Bay came out the same year as D3, and it played a heck of a lot better while also employing pixel shaders.

Btw D3 came out in the same year as Far Cry (stunning at the time) and Half-Life 2. Do i really need to say something about the Source engine compared to D3's ID tech 4? Laughing

And what would that be?

It's no secret on the hump how much I loathe Tech 4 and 4.1 (also called "5" Laughing) for many, many reasons; although the main one is because it simply didn't feel as good as Tech 3 by miles in Q4 MP. That said, at the time the lighting for example was much superior in T4 compared to Source.

That's somewhat arguable. While dynamic pixel shading was advanced tech at the time, Doom 3 managed to look less realistic and incredibly plasticy compared to HL2 (even on the initial Source engine), what with the low res textures and lack of proper ambient lighting.

Yes, but that doesn't make the technology itself any less impressive. The plastic look is one of the other reasons I couldn't stand Doom 3 and Quake 4, but the dynamic lighting was still mighty impressive for the time Smile

The engine had some impressive features, but just wasn't practical to use on the hardware available at the time (and i mean the engine, not the game. The game was a dark mess, and when i could see something, it was something made of rubber Laughing ). These many limitations, like the problems it had with open areas (ET:Quake Wars Laughing), show that the source engine was just more versatile (and IMHO, better.) The commercial licenses each engine had can attest that.

Quote:
John Carmack quit id Software because parent company ZeniMax Media wouldn't agree to let games he was working on appear on the Oculus Rift virtual reality headset.

In an interview with USA Today, developer legend Carmack revealed he would have stayed at id if he had been allowed to make the likes of Wolfenstein: The New Order and Doom 4 work on the Oculus Rift.
