The EU regions get encrypted NCF's that download the data files in encrypted form, US (Or proxy though it can be risky.) will get the "clean" NCF's and also the option to decrypt, using the disc image works on a lot of files but the main exe and .dll's are updated and doesn't match and not all the "core" exe data is on the disc either.
(Some support .dl and the two exe's so you get the Steam updated exe which does not work with the non-updated DLL files.)
That said it should be released worldwide in about 12 hours or so, countdown is just for the end of the day though I suppose there is a chance for Valve to do a midnight unlock of the data.

I can only say to keep your money away from this unoptimized and untested hunk of junk ... The huge map crashes no matter what gfx settings i use because it uses to much memory for each civ and city state that windows xp can handle. So im stuck on standard size ... nice going 2k ...
There is NO WAY this software needs to use 1+ gig of memory for some fucking XML text files to run ...
the rivers and forests look like puke, worst gfx textures ive ever seen. The sea is a joke, the 5 year old predecesor looked better and had better animations...
hunk of junk coding and fx. 10 bucks yes maybe if they fix it so it runs in winxp . 50 .. never

Cos you install it TO your steam account so you don't have to download it. It's just like with all other games the require steam.

Steam has an option to create a 'backup' of your game if you want so you can move that to another computer and run your game without having to re-download the whole thing. The DVD contains essentially a 'backup' version which it copies to your computer so you don't have to download the whole Civ5 install. It then updates it from Steam as necessary.

And this kind of protection is crackable? (I'm been kind of disconnected from the game world last few years...)

I haven't had a single crash with this game after playing it for last 3 days.
And i disagree with you other observations as well.

Right, if it were that simple. Truth is I don't know how they'll handle Civ5's DLCs, price-wise. But if I buy the game and the downloadable content ends up being as overpriced as, say, Dragon Age's, I'm thoroughly fucked.

i7 960extreme, GForce 460x2 and 12 gigs of ram on Win7.
I am playing with everything maxed, no slow down, no bugs or freezes, and I still have room to run WoW and my bot on my second monitor. The problem for the XP kiddo is straight up PEBKAC. Time to Upgrade and let go of that POS operating system.

Maybe you should loosen your belt a bit and spend some money on a modern PC. Upgrade to Windows 7 too while you're at it. This game runs perfectly for me with highest settings possible and DX11. Sure, the graphics are not as good as say, Anno 1404, but they don't need to be for a Civ game.
This is an awesome game, aside from the diplomacy maybe, and I didn't really get into previous Civ titles to be honest. Can't wait for a scene release though, since I'm not buying this until it's on some nice sale on Steam in a couple years time, lol.
Oh, and for the record -- I am running Windows 7 64-bit w/ i7 930 @ 3.8GHz, GTX460 OC'd and 6GB of DDR3 @ 1600MHz.

Okay I yield, despite the games flaws, bugs and obvious DLC sized holes it has an addictive quality that is hard to dismiss. But I still feel it's like playing Battle Isle mixed with Empire Earth now, you're constantly at war with someone, hardly a turn goes by where you're not wondering how to best position your combat units.
Now I'm gonna go back and see if I can whip 'ole Washington into shape with my Landsknechts.
Oh and the game can be quite ram hungry, but I have 12gb of it and running Windows 7 64bit, so it's really a non issue for me, it never crashes on large maps with everything maxed out and 16 opponents.

This is getting derpier by the minute. Seriously.
Even if it supports XP I don't think there are too many people who'll argue that Vista/7 isn't the superior OS by now.
Unless you're one of those people who don't pirate an OS (those people apparently exist) then I feel for you because i wouldn't have paid 150-200 (or whatever it costs now) for Windows 7.
Bless the fact I got it for free from my university

Most of the great stuff for Civ4 came from the mod community not from the official expansion packs. With the extensive modding community I'm not sure what content would even be useful to release as a DLC. I can see extra civs being realeased as DLC, or maybe some custom scenarios. I could probably just skip these as just playing vanilla Civ5 will easilly keep me busy for months.
The only DLC I would get pissed about was if they released a multiplayer patch as a DLC.
If you don't want to buy it that's fine. But I think you argument for it is a bit lacking. You'll enjoy the game if you purchase it, and not buying because of some theoretical fear of DLC content isn't very compelling. You'll easilly get more hours of play per dollar value than 95% of the games on the market.

Sounds like the typical problem xp has with every other modern strategy game that requires memory levels above normal 2004 levels, requiring the /3gb switch.
But then I don't have the game here to look at it and see.

I'm not one of the developers, so I can ignore them as I wish. You sure you tried DirectX9 mode and turning graphics settings down like Texture Quality? There is NO WAY it doesn't work on Windows XP just because of some OS limitations. I still think you're just one of those people who expect modern games to work ideally on outdated PCs with outdated operating systems. Even if XP is 30% on Steam, I'm glad the developers focused on the other 70% who have moved on and providing the very best experience for those with modern PCs.

I have XP on my family's PC upstairs and it runs StarCraft 2 and some other recent strategy titles just fine. I think it's a combination of outdated hardware, memory limitations, and developers catering to modern customers. I still doubt Civ 5 is unplayable on XP, especially with the DX9 option included in the launcher and the developers advertising how scalable their engine is for this game.
