Any recommendations for other RTS games similar to this in regards to:
-Turn based
-Not too simple, not too complicated
-Nice array of upgrade choices along the way?
Any time-era or theme will work for me btw. | Jagged Alliance 2 with the 1.13 patch.

well i really enjoyed it because of the fun gameplay (for me) and i usually hate strategy games. i enjoyed all the leveling up and building shit stuff, and trying to get together my perfect team.
only thing i can really fault it for, was not having a story. i would have preferred more story-development missions, rather than.. like... 3 was it? everything else was just random levels.
so gameplay was great
narrative and how it was delivered - fail.

I enjoyed the game as well , but it was a bit lacking in the content department (I would love to see more different weapon types, armors and combat vehicles).

Original X-Com was ~20 years ago, back then we were younger and weren't as spoilt
I had a blast playing this game. |
Besides the graphics part, the old X-com game was vastly superior to this one...

the old one was, in my humble opinion, too clustered with a lot of useless stuff, that encumbered the game for no reason and made basically no difference to the game either.
I also like the smaller team, which makes tactical game play that much more important.

I think the original(s) is still the king. This was a good game, but the original UFO and Terror from the Deep have yet to be bested IMO...

I see.
I however miss alot of those things since to me they brought re-playability to the game.

I havent played any xcom game before -.- The only similar(?) game i loved was Gorky17.. is this much like it ? Are the missions and enemies varied enough or do you fight the same generic looking alien over and over ?

There's a lot of different enemies... unlike Gorky, every enemy here is a legitimate threat. There's also an overlaying strategical map where you do research, choose your mission and equip your soldiers. Another difference is that in XCOM there's a lot of different equipment for your soldiers (weapons, armor, accessories).
I've played gorky a long time ago, so I might be wrong though.

Well, i loved to have bigger team when I could flank enemy, throw nades and finish up what left of them.
Aliens were shooting from dark and killing my soldiers on sight. They didnt present themselves and there was no animation every single time i met them (i know, can be disabled, but I am writing about game's design). Many times I was terrified when I lost 2 soliders becouse of shots of nowhere.
New XCOM is too consolized, flashy, colorfull...
Well... different tastes i suppose.

I also liked the new one better than the classics (despite the fact that I still like them very much). For once, I felt that a game was actually simplified in the right places, and it made the gameplay better - more focused, paced a bit faster and with a higher emphasis placed on your squad's lives. Couldn't tear myself away from it for weeks.
Still, it definitely is a matter of personal preference.

The problem with the new one was the tiny maps and the absurdly stupid "pop-up" mechanic for enemies.
Beyond that, the game was just too short. It should have been twice as long, really.

Idd, nothing more annoying than moving in a tactical formation for 2min without a single enemy to been seen.
And then suddenly, you walk past an invisible line (Not before! It's ridiculous mechanic) and suddenly you are flanked and your snipers in the rear get surprise buttsex.
After a while I ditched my snipers and went rambo everytime, beat the game, boring as hell.

I felt a lack of weapons and technologies. Even some more enemys would be fun and a more customizable soldiers profile.
If you add that, this game would be a blast.

I miss more soldiers (8-10 would be enough for me). Bigger areas and... action points. Being able to do many different things at one turn, not just run+one action, added a lot more flexibility and tactical options.

you are almost always gonna lose countries, you should have in priorities to build satelites and satellite uplinks, and before the end of the month launch the satellites on the red panicked ones.
This also helps with the cash each month

Yeah, like webtax said, build shit loads of satellites and the day before the monthly council meeting launch all your satellites on the countries you want to keep.
