So, we didn't see this coming even though we've read and heard about the troubles with Aliens: Colonial Marines ever since it's inception/announcement, namely quality issue, publisher withdrawing, game at one point being cancelled, then picked up by a new publisher etc. etc. etc. all pointing towards a game that would be sold on the merit of it's name and CGI clips and a very aggressive PR campaign at the last moment, with pre-ordering being the main income source to reclaim some of what the new publisher paid (probably for very cheap) for the game and IP.
IMHO there hasn't been a good Aliens/AvP game since the original AvP/AvP2. The latest and most recent AvP was imo so boring that I quit after 2 hours or less.
The only two problems AvP2k10 had, and that's also the one that killed it, were those stupidly implemented stealth/killmoves in the MP and the console shit matchmaking.. (remind you, the server browser was garbage and it took them too long to get it working properly)
I pretty sure the game would still be played today if you could've canceled those mid animation and got rid of the "press E to instakill and enemy from behind" entirely. The last one was even worse when combined with a lagging Alien player. Which brings us to the stupid matchmaking, terrible serverbrowser and that there were no in-depth options to configure a server (like ping limits and such).
So infact, ACM and AvP2k10 are both badly executed license games with not much thought put into. Especially not for the long run even though they want/wanted to sell us their super awesome DLC packs, inspired by the glory of Activision/IW and their very succsessful 15$ map-packs which featured recycled levels from the campaign (again, no real thought put into it... you won't find crap like these in Q3/A for example).
Was just saying because people come up with "the MP is great" everywhere. They completely fucked up the surface transition of the Aliens.
Yet, I think this has more replay value than the AvP2k10 MP has so I guess I'll pick up the ACM complete pack on Steam sale in a couple of months. I guess they'll shove it out for about 15€ at the end of the year or even earlier considering all the bad press it gets.
Nice move using all the horseshit hype from gearbox's trailers too.
I was and still am really sad about it too. Sincerely. I had really high hopes for this. Luckily AvP2k10 taught me me to wait and try the ISO demo first...
It's a real fucking shame because I always wanted a good FPS with everything Cameron's Aliens had to offer (yes, I'm tired of the Predator crossover...). Sooo many possibilities and they screw it up in every way. If they would've at least make a decent L4D clone out of this... but no, that mode comes as a payed DLC (even AvP2k10 had a fucking "survive waves of enemy AI" mode included for free.. then they wanted us to pay for more maps for it).
It's ridiculously sad. I'm still can't believe it's true... I wish they pressed the wrong files on the discs or uploaded the wrong build on Steam or something

As I explained: http://www.nfohump.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=2113607#2113607 they replaced their fully dynamic lighting renderer for either the basic UE3 one, or a severely cut down version of the tech they had developed, which makes the final game look bland.
They had said that initially they believed they couldn't get their renderer to run on consoles, but supposedly they discovered that they actually can, at "90%" of PC quality (PR speech for yeah, it works.. sorta). http://www.nfohump.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=2113615#2113615
New details that emerged: http://www.polycount.com/forum/showpost.php?p=1775801&postcount=182 reveal that when TimeGate's studio Ryan Hawkins worked on it during 2011-2012 the lighting engine was only 45% completed. You got that? The game began development 6 years ago, and less than a year ago the lighting engine wasn't even half-completed. Furthermore he reveals a lot of the assets were outsourced to Shangai contractors to get them done cheap. And many of them were created 6 years ago, which is why they look like they belong to a 360 launch title..
tl;dr when Gearbox saw that the lighting engine and needed optimizations needed months upon months of work to be completed they scrapped it. It was that or go to court for failing to reach their deadline for the nth time.
