in 2e AD&D, saving throws do not depend at all from stats, including mental stats.

What weapon proficiences would you recommend? Dual wield long swords, flails or something else? And what about 2h weapons too? 2h swords or maybe something else?
I also dont know what new weapons (if any) did Overhaul put into the game for enhanced edition. |
I'd really recommend that you go for both ranged and hand to hand weapons on a character. Even simple sling can get you a lot of kills because of low level setting of the game. And with berserker dwarf you should go with two weapon style as they can level it up to three later in game. Then two points in hand to hand weapon (swords, daggers) and one in ranged and you are good to go.
I'm playing fighter to be dualed into druid at level 6. I should be a long way till I get him to level 7 druid and his fighter abilities come back to him, but when he gets there, he should become really fun to play. Heavy armour, druid spells and at max level 3 and 4 points in scimitars and darts. I never really had a character with high proficiency in darts (mostly because you were restricted to 20 darts per inventory space) and their blistering number of attacks per round is proving highly useful even early in the game.
As for new weapons, I only found one +1 wakizashi, or whatever is called.

if youre going for malee fighter/berserker class why not just pick halforc? best possible choice.
and i dont understand that about rolling - you dont need to reroll much, just substract wisdom/int/charisma and put all max into 1st 3 stats, then rest in charisma - tadam, baldurs gate character creation explained.
btw whats your favourite team guys? i currently have warrior (myself), imoen thief/mage, kivan ranger and yeslick warrior/priest.

The thing was humans and elves always got the best treatment in the BG world. Being a non-human/elf helped during some rare situations with monsters though.
1 and 2 are still amazing.

There are no dumb options, no real race dialogue restrictions ( and NO romances, that's BG2 ) in BG1 and the stats DO NOT affect save rolls (that's 3rd ed your thinking of...you can have a 3 INT and still have better save vs. spell rolls than someone with 14, it's class/level related ). They do however affect things like AC, amount of bonus spells and weight limit.

Thats far from an universal truth. If you choose human as a race, you should be doing it because you want to dual class or be a Paladin (and I would recommend neither for a starting player). Dual class is op if you know what you are doing tho (you can even start the game via multiplayer, still play it single player and make a party of all figher types like Kensai -> Mage, Figther -> Cleric etc and it will be power gaming nirvana if you do it proper. (but again, dont do this is a first time player).
Like mentioned on this page and on the last page a Half-Orc fighter type for the 19str, 18dex and 19con. A dwarf also rocks with his 19con because he gets insanely good saving throws. If you want to be an Archer a Elf would be best because of his 19dex and natural ability with bows. While being a Gnome you can have 19int and multi-class as a illusionist (as the only race which can multi-class with a special kit). So race should be bound to class if we are talking power gaming.
And Bendi most people here are playing the new EE version and indeed there are romances in bg1 (as there have been for many years due to mods).

When i talked about dialogues as other races i meant like many old games like this are very unforgiving and can be sort of jackassy. Like a guy won't give you a quest because you're a fucking half ogre or whatnot. or people talking shit in your face for not being human. For me it's no fun to play like that.

I agree with you on everything. Except on paladins. For me he is one of the easiest classes to play (normal one, screw fancy useless kits). He can wear any armour, get bonus on saving throws and really useful lay-on-hands. One drawback may look to be his inability to go past two proficiency slots in weapons, but even fighters only get six points max and they must spend first four at character creation. So with paladin you just spend two on ranged, two on hand to hand and two on style, simple. Only really bad thing is that player must be careful with reputation. Noticing that your paladin has fallen, who knows when and why, is no fun.
And yes, there are romances in EE.

xxax - I think so ya - but if you already got bg running with tutu and other great mods, then just wait for some more patches/enhancements:)

I wasn't really using it all, the problem is Xan will stand there and use his sling no problem, but... if I have him cast a spell, he'll cast then, then when it's done he'll close to melee range and start firing his sling at them from melee range. Makes no sense.

Well I played Paladins due to the reasons you posts on more than one occasion back then (he is the perfect team leader). But I was answering if a DnD noob should start with such an character and I think not - but you already posted that reason. Kill a flaming fist mercenary via sketchy dialog on more than one occasion and your already close to fallen.

Edwin and Xzar would do the same thing when I was playing. I just gave up on BGEE. I was looking forward to a replay but this isn't worth the trouble

Xzar didn't do that for me, and neither does Dynaheir. It's weird, but I guess I'm not alone
