Randomness is part of the game, so I just keep playing no matter what. Game gives you ability to hire new soldiers, so it is part of the game to lose some. By reloading every time soldier dies, you end up with ultimate squad, start using the same move to cover -> overwatch tactics over and over again. So every combat encounter becomes very similar to the previous one, and eventually just bores you to death.
I save at the base before the mission, at the beginning of the mission start and again at the base after the mission. Kinda playing ironman in spirit, reload only if I did something really ballsy and stupid in the first turn. So far, only had to reload once.
Got a super tiny graveyard map with a huge collapsed wall and car next to it, high cover only at the far edges and two tiles in the middle. On my first turn I start moving everyone to high cover and I do a very stupid dashing move with my last soldier and reveal three mutons. Mutons throw two grenades and shoot plasma - two xcom agents are dead, and car is on fire. Next turn another two xcom agents are dead. This encounter was the closes thing to the famous rocket / grenade to the skyranger on the first turn in classic xcom

Also, after you've done the changes don't forget to start a new game. For me it didn't work until I restarted from a fresh game. ^_^

Ironman is actually keeping me FROM playing the game now. I'm just too tired and I don't want to risk my men because of it. Ironman is like EVE Online. The consequences are brutal which makes the combat so much better.

Yeah me too, its piling up and quickly making the game unplayable. I'm too far ahead in the game to restart.

Whats this? All your men are injured, but you have to use 4 men, to continue or what is it?
Maybe some cheat code or something?

is it me, or seem mutons (all of them) seriously bugged when it comes to their hit chance ? They're the ones shooting through every cover, everything inbetween, without destroying anything but always hitting.
To me, it looks like their aim stat is extremely high/too high/bugged high ...

I really hate how every enemy gets a chance to run away and hide open being spotted. This is just stupid. Is there no surprise in this game?
I look at the last UFO game I played (what was it, afterlight?) and feel like it's just a vastly superior game to this one.
If I recall correctly even that one was dumbed down a bit compared to Xcom, so this is even dumbed down further.
If they took that game and just did even more modern graphics it would have been great.
The engine is not bad, and though it keeps sucking me in, I'm finding myself continually disappointed by things
Which means I'll never pay full price or possibly buy it. I doubt i'd replay once I finished it.
Top annoyances:
1)no surprise
2)team members keep running after spotting an enemy. Hello??
3)I think in aftershock you could have 2 teams, makes sense. Let me build another bird. I can build interceptors, satellites, hire 99 soldiers, but I can't send out 2 groups at once?
4)inconsistent lines of site. Several times I've had my sniper unable to target an enemy that was no further away than one they just killed, and who seems to be in a clear line of site with nothing in between, flyers cause havoc with this as soldiers don't seem to be able to shoot up very well
5)"heard" enemies is fairly crappy, just some random soundwave coming from somewhere.
6)no crouching, laying, etc. in some maps there has been a distinct lack of cover where you engage an enemy, getting to one of the 2 cover spots means a huge group and grenade bate. If I could lay my sniper down anywhere and start picking people off that would help
7)Inventory slots a little weak. I'm wearing a vest under my armor, so I couldn't possibly hang a grenade off my belt. Seriously?
8)dumbed down action points. move, shoot, that's it? Pull the trigger and you're done? You couldn't possibly pull the trigger first then duck behind something right? If some people can shoot and then reload, why can't I reload then shoot?
Lot of unrealized potential here.

hm, when you have your team in overwatch (and range), then they will fire on newly spotted enemies who run into cover. At least they do for me.

There are three good advices for tactical part.
1) Always stay in high cover. Always.
2) Try to be in overwatch if you can.
3) Always advance for one action then shoot or overwatch. If you have to dash always do it when everyone else is in overwatch.
In my experience it's better to shoot from high cover being far away from enemy then advancing to get better shot in low cover. You will probably loose a soldier if you do so.
Edit: Oh! And if you stay long enough in cover without moving the game will show you were you can hear the enemy. So you will know how to advance.

no they are all on " mission " which they arent, and cant be selected to squad, even tho when you enter squad selection soldier models are actually displayed, but no name in soldier slot, and if you add soldier to that slot you have 2 soldiers models meshing into one, really fucked up,

Same crap happens when you have one soldier marked, zoomed out and then switch to the next one, the camera zoomes back in.

Especially annoying when you're in one of the bigger ships and the auto-cam is determined to look one level higher then the soldier actually is, constandly defaulting to the roof.

Thats how tactics games work, if you move your guy to a spot, that guy will move to that spot, no if's and's or but's about it. If you brought him into danger that way, thats on your shoulders, not the games'.
Don't dashrun if you can avoid it. Move to the edge of the blue zone first, preferably at a cover to scout if it's safe. If it's not you can then decide to take a shot, go into overwatch, use a skill or move back. Wouldnt be the first time I dashmoved my scout into a spot where he is flanked by 2 aliens.
If it is you can risk making the full dashmove (often needed during bombdefuse and panicmissions, where you don't have time for overwatch).
