As stupid as it sounds. You crawl through your window, slip and get fucking impaled by shards of glass. You are stuck and you are bleeding out.

I do realize that if you sever a major a artery bleeding out can go rather quickly but still.

Even though the article doesn't state it, I'd bet that the guy was probably drunk/high out of his mind.
At least I had a neighbour that used similar hijinx every friday night, coupled with a ladder to reach said window.
So I can see him bleeding to his death but way too far out to be able to scream for help... that or the neighbours were like me and they dismissed it as drunken bullshit.
That or I blame the neighbour that was probably watching CSI at the time and thought the screams were the YYYYYYYEEEEEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHH DUN DUN DUN
