im going to take another serious look at this given the whole filehost issue with all the hosters becoming so paranoid... i need a reliable way to get my shizzle and people seem to always be recommending them or mentioning them as their go-to for downloads.
so info? suggestions on which provider is best, and you're overall happiness with them, and any other things i should know about them. thanks... because i know nothing about anything to do with this stuff. ive looked at websites in the past, but i kinda forgot anything i learned because i wasnt seriously looking into it, but now i am. pissing about with slow and dwindling filehost uploads... its just gotta go, you know? time to move on.
and yeah new topic. search seems to still be fucked and i dont find anything in my browser history for any previous topics, so yeah...

It's a whole lot safer than torrents, as Usenet providers GENERALLY don't keep records of what you download -- and with SSL it's pretty much impossible for anyone to packet sniff you. And yes; I use Astraweb (a lot of people on these boards do, if memory serves me correctly)

k thanks. ill probably get it for 1 month and see how i like it. i see it as $15 a month for the unlimited dsl plan - is that the one you can get down to $10? or were you talking about their $10 5mb/s plan?
also whats the selection like? content-wise, is pretty much everything new available pretty quickly? older stuff i can still torrent or use file-hosts so im not that concerned about that stuff.
also what about range of content? im thinking about movies in particular - is it just scene stuff (popular main scene groups), or is there a lot of choice?

Aye, the $15/mo is the one I have -- but wifey and I took out a deal many moons ago that gave us Astra for $11 a month and the best thing about Astra? The price you pay when you open the account is the price you continue to pay. Impressive stuff. Every so often they run a $10/mo deal though, so keep looking. You can get pretty much everything new and a huge selection of old (best thing to do is create free accounts on sites such as NZBSRUS and NZBMatrix, then browse for whatever you want) but you'll always have torrents for the older, hard to find, stuff.

Good, this saves me from making a new thread or digging out the older ones with the malfunctioning search engine;
I'm still with Tweaknews, 4th year now but as of late it really started to suck balls.
I don't know if its me or anyone else has the same problem but the speed is fluctuating horribly for a month now.
At some hours its fine but most of the day I need all 20 connections to even get 8mbit down. (I got the 20mbit subscription)
Also there are alot of error 430 recently (had to dl from 3 crossposts to get undamaged Kingdom of Amalur) and esp. Wii games are "mysteriously" damaged. It was fine the years before..
Atleast its cheap, less than 6€ a month and retention of 900 is acceptable.
btw. I think hitnews is still handing out free 3-day trials, no obligations

Thanks for the heads up Sabin, just subscribed myself to try it out.
So, what's the recommended software to use?

Been with Astraweb for about 3 yrs now, as stated fantastic service, quite cheap, no problems at all! Go and sign up now! I also use Newsbinpro, might not be the best but I have used it from the start so I am used to the interface.

I used Newsleecher before and seemed like the best choice, but later switched to Newsbin Pro. Oddly enough I tried Newsbin before, but still liked Newsleecher better at the time. Can't even remember now what exactly made me switch over. It's pretty good and you get a discount if you are an AstraWeb user (that is if you are willing to pay for the client).
I used this guide back in the day to get myself familiar with the whole thing:
http://www.slyck.com/Newsgroups_Guide
It might be a bit outdated, but the general info is still good.
Basically all you need is a newsreader and a site for getting nzb files (I use NZB Matrix). It's pretty simple with that. It only gets a bit trickier once you actually decide to subscribe to some newsgroups and keep an eye on the updates yourself, which is not really necessary.

Thanks, figured it out. Decided to newsleecher + nzbmatrix for now.
One question though, in server settings in newsleecher, how many allowed connections should I use to the server? The default is 1.

Each provider has its own limits on concurrent connections. Basically you set it as high as you need (within the allowed limits) to max out your speed. I have set mine to 5 or 7, I think. Just set it to a similar number and see where it gets you.. the actual value is not that critical as long as your speeds are fine. I am not aware of any other penalties for setting it too high or too low.

Dunno, took it from here http://www.news.astraweb.com/faq.html#plans7
Code: | Most news reader software require only 2 connections to function.
We believe that you will not get higher throughput or bandwidth utilization by using more than 4 connections. The main limitations of bandwidth or speed to the news server is the actual physical limitation of your bandwidth to our servers.

Maybe it's about something else though.

http://www.nzbindex.nl/ should do fine.
Usenet is easier to filter out the bad shit:
- Password protected? Never.
- First to upload games are typically kere.ws
- Always grab the first upload
- Obviously watch the size of whatever you're grabbing.

I think it was a 24h promotion that started on the 7th, so it ended by now.

Awww, oh well. Keep checking.. they do it VERY often. Same goes for Matrix too; $5/life/10yr thing. Some people balk at paying, as I once did, but honestly; it's five bucks and it'll last you a decade. Hardly unfair - though I know some will scream blue murder about "making money from piracy" - forgetting that running sites and servers costs a fuckton of money >_>

Getting NZBsrus vip shouldn't be all too hard on here
Further if you are going for astraweb, they have a referrer on their page, if you want to support them a little (It's the 10$ deal)
