That would be surprising, since Bastion isn't really an indie game. They got Shank before though, so, I guess they're relaxing the definition of "indie" somewhat.

I am thinking Limbo may be in it. I swear I had read somewhere that Trine 2 would be in a bundle in Feb. But that seems way too soon.

Doubt Bastion will be in it, it sold enough already and its published by WB games which makes them far from really indie ( yes I know the term is indie is a difficult one as it is )

I think it’s a great idea and we would love to contribute to a project like that in the future. In fact, we’ve already been asked to be included by several bundle companies. |

What does indie mean? For example is a game made by Bill Gates (and him alone) indie, or not since he's rich as fuck?

indie stands for Independant developer.
i guess that means that if Creators arend bounded by publisher deals, then its indie

Then, Dota 2 is indie? It's self developed and published by Valve. No publisher has contributed to it, be it funding, marketing, shipping, everything is handled by Valve.

What does being a publisher mean today?
Since Notch releases Minecraft through his own website to 5 million people, is he a publisher? Does that make him non indie?
It's very difficult to define what being indie means.

It absolutely is. Valve is independent from all external funding and control. They don't even owe any banks or any kind of external investors (publisher or otherwise) any money. Valve represents the ultimate independent ideal on a large scale. Yes, Valve is their own "publisher," but being your own publisher doesn't keep you from being indie.
"Indie" is short for "independent," not "small." Nothing about the word "independent" itself connotates size or scale.
consolitis wrote: | What does being a publisher mean today? |
It usually means fronting most of a developer's funding needs during development of a game, in exchange for some creative control and at least partial rights to the IP, as well as a (usually very large) portion of the sales revenue, and the right to distribute the game.
Quote: | Since Notch releases Minecraft through his own website to 5 million people, is he a publisher? Does that make him non indie? |
Minecraft is self-published. Mojang is publishing (presumably with all that entails) the game Cobalt by the developer Oxeye Game Studio, which makes that game non-indie.
Quote: | It's very difficult to define what being indie means. |
Not really.
What "independent" means, is that you don't rely on any external funding for your operation, and maintain all control for yourself (which you usually have to partially trade away, in exchange for traditional funding).

Yes, really.

You would think a site dedicated to indie game development would adopt a no-ifs-no-buts-this-IS-what-indie-means definition, instead of discussing possible definitions.
If you check Steam not even Valve classifies Dota 2 as indie (which strictly speaking it is), but they DO classify Bastion as one (which strictly speaking it's not). Either they are "wrong" or indie no longer means what it meant originally.

The word for that isn't necessarily "indie." It's "experimental." A game can be experimental and not indie, or indie and not experimental, or both, or neither.
Quote: | Others think it’s a mindset where you’re not letting money, marketing, and big business cloud the vision for your game. |
That's closer.
The problem here is using one word to mean too many things. "Indie" refers to an independent creative and funding paradigm. Other words should be used to describe other traits of games (like "quirky" or "artsy" or "experimental"). It's stupid to try to boil it all down to one all-encompassing word. That just dumbs everything down until the word becomes meaningless.
Quote: | You would think a site dedicated to indie game development would adopt a no-ifs-no-buts-this-IS-what-indie-means definition, instead of discussing possible definitions. |
I'm pretty sure they aren't solely entitled to tell everyone what that word means, especially if it contradicts what every published dictionary ever says.

Or maybe, Valve's tags for classifying stuff on the Steam store isn't the final word on what is or isn't indie? They do just use it as a marketing term (since it is a store).

I think Cedge's point is that the term "indie" in its raw form appeals only to the economics, in which case he is correct. Consider indie art and indie music: in both cases the term arose from the fact that the material was not mainstream, and specifically not available on typical market channels. While this implies no outside funding, quite often artists rely on collaborative forms of funding, and indie artists are especially known to self-publish. You in fact see that with indie games today, in the form of not only bundles, but the funding of the games through their alpha and beta phases via independent investors, often with supply coming from their own (often donate-supported) sites.
Therefore, his conclusion of a lack of publisher is closer to the real meaning of the word, although over time there were indie labels and establishments created for music and art; it was only after this practice became mainstream, and the term itself became mainstream, that things started to get confused. Some might think that easier access to indie titles, via Steam and Desura, makes them less- or none-indie, but due to the digital nature of games (not to mention music and even art, increasingly these days), the term itself is still evolving, but the idea of "no singular publisher" (outside the creator(s)) remains a constant, at least in my opinion.
Keep in mind that Valve plainly says they "have no boss" and Gabe has stated that "gamers could be investors," making them seem pretty indie to me. Other indie game companies have taken routes similar to theirs, now...Stardock, Paradox Interactive, etc...so perhaps they lose the "indie" moniker when they start doing more than just producing games. After all, I have no doubt that the first indie labels and artist groups were created by indie artists themselves; that separation does not make them any less indie, it only shifts their role in the mix. So it's not so confusing when you get to the soul of it.
