You have some flexibility but many people would probably suggest biochem, which matches up with the supporting skills of bioanalysis and diplomacy. Another good choice would be cybertech, which relies on scavenging and underworld trading.
crafting is really something that stands out in this mmo, compared to most others.
Its just so satisfying, to discover better versions of a receipt and even more satisfying, if you get a "critical hit (so to speak)" on them.
here an example :
First Row are the receipts, the green one being the original and the blue and 2 purple receipts discovered from it (either by crafting or reverse engineering) and the bottom one being an example of a "critical success" (having an open mod slot extra)
they sure did good with that part of the game hehe.

As someone who enjoys crafting above everything else (SWG pre-CU crafting, ATITD) this games crafting is hardly something that stands out. The only more 'modern' mainstream MMO that had decent crafting recently was Vanguard.
God thats harsh!
Thats why i always play those games as a "goog person". I just couldnt play like that:P

Uhm, I think the crafting is as straight forward as it gets - much like the rest of the game.
and that means ?
Because"straight forward" isn't much of a measurement of quality, but a rating of difficulty.
If its that, yes, crafting is easy to do.
But seeing as its you posting, im sure some failtrolling is coming as a reply
Wasn't I on ignore for you? Was better for both of us that way.
Anyway, I don't want to get in a long winded post, but there are a few things to consider:
Crafting, much like the rest of the game doesn't require any choices to be made. There is a clear "best" path for every class regarding itemization and it's based on simple math. Material about this is already available on the forums and other places.
The from gathering to producing work line is also very linear and has no variance. Finding recipes is also a simple, well known procedure.
Until people start making twinked characters, BioWare took the incentive of people away from buying crafted goods, because slightly worse stuff is available from vendors at a good price (for the same level), than what a crafter could make. This leaves a very small window for crafters to make a profit, when looking at the vast majority of the game's audience, the profit isn't even guaranteed. Let me give you an example: A grade 3 green beam generator from the vendor costs 2750, crafting a grade 2 blue beam generator costs me at average around 2000. The difference in quality between the two is minimal (in the blue's favor). Posting it as a one day offer takes off roughly 13%t. So if I sell for around 4500 - which people don't tend to buy these days at that price, but let's assume - then my profit is ~1950. Taking in to account account the time it takes my companions to farm the components, I calculated, that during the same time from the nerfed slicing I make 2.2 - 2.3 times more.
That's the below level 50 market, and this won't change until people start caring about having the best possible items for any given level, while leveling their second/third .. characters. Even then, the question stands, will people care? Leveling is piss easy anyway - and fast - so why invest in something, that changes so quickly.
That leaves the level 50 market - I'll have to analyze that in detail, before I give my opinion on crafting, but the below level 50 market is thoroughly fucked.
Anyway, if I feel like it, I'll explain all these in detail later.
Rift beating SWTOR for the title "2011 Most Innovative"
and you are surprised why? rift might not be most innovative game on the market, but it sure adds decent amount of stuff, apart different crafting system what new does swtor adds, oh ye nothing at all
World events = laughable questing over a course of 5 days, can't call that an event.
See here:
instant questing adventure = you get put in a group with people to kill xx amount of mobs there, then collect xx of items there, then kill elite mob named x and rinse and repeat.
See here:
True they added a new area, but if you look to the older area's already, most was quite deserted.
So why not think of something to bring the older ones back to life.
And the thing that killed Rift is it's engine, GameBryo for an MMORPG, unoptimized as fuck.
People could bear with a bad clone of WoW, but having it run on a rig like mine with 5-10 fps in combat... lolololol
Anyway i cba going over ALL things i hated while playing it. Played it for around 5 months (or so), cleared more then half of HK before it left it.
But i regret not doing something better with that time.

Yet Rift played really welll compared to swtor, and it even looks decent, compared to swtor, and it dosent eat your system ressources like a fat chick at an all you can eat buffet .

Well, i will get my copy prolly around next week somewhere (if i'm lucky), don't know what to do tbh.
Continue with current char that i made during the pre-release days.
Go back to old WoW/Rift guild and play SWTOR with them (altho we prolly end up the same as in WoW and Rift, 4 of us boosting 21/16 others that nonstop fucking fail all the time)
Or join these crappy Germans, altho they do PvP and i kinda dislike PvPing
Just sitting here thinking hard if i want to get deep involved into MMORPG again and go hardcore raiding or take it slow this time.
I do however have planned to go DEFO play Tera Online once it's released, this is just a timekiller untill then
