Does the PC version have the same shitty FOV of consoles versions? I tried the demo in the derpbox and the extremely low FOV gave me nauseating motion sickness.

While graphics look good and smooth, it feels indeed hollow, the racing part felt particularly poor. On the other hand the gunplay felt quite satisfying with the gadgets and all that, so i'm wondering if the FOV was better or could be fixed in the PC version this could be a somewhat entertaining game.

Its not the FOV that is the problem, but the player camera and gun's placement. Its placed too far and its typical for console FPS games. I hate this with passion and I cant play any of these new games properly, and I have no idea how can people invest so many hours in them. Scratch Head

@jonwils it is deeply frustrating that driver overhead can cause memory problems on a system with >5x the memory of a console.

Layoffs

edit: http://www.joystiq.com/2012/01/10/bethesda-confirms-layoffs-at-id-software-work-on-future-id-tit/

Quote:
"As part of its standard business practice, id regularly evaluates staffing to ensure it has a workforce that meets the needs of the studio. As part of that process, some id employees were recently let go," the statement reads.

Despite the layoffs, the publisher additionally noted that it is "still recruiting and hiring qualified developers" for id Software, and that "development work on future id titles continues unabated."

RAGE 1.2 Patch Release Notes
--------------------------------------------------------------------
This RAGE patch adds some new features and addresses various compatibility and performance issues.

New Functionality
------------------------
Texture Detail: Enabling Texture Detail will improve up-close texture quality by performing upsampling with adaptive sharpening. This does not update or increase the resolution of the base textures included with the game but improves the perceived resolution and crispness of textures. This is an intensive operation and is only recommended if you have a quad-core CPU or higher. Please disable this feature if you encounter poor performance, stability issues or are given a notification that the game has run out of memory after loading a map. The Texture Detail option can be found in the Settings -> Video Menu.

Transcode Benchmark: A new benchmark has been added that determines how quickly texture data can be translated from the compressed format on your hard drive to a format that can be used by your video card. The higher your score, the faster your PC is able to make higher detail texture data available. This is not a traditional benchmark that runs through a scene of the game and returns a min/max/average framerate based on hardware and video settings. Other than the GPU Transcode option, the score will not be affected by changing any video settings. The Transcode Benchmark option can be found in the Settings -> Video Menu.

Error Messaging: If you attempt to apply video settings on a system that is not capable of handling them, an error may come up stating that your system ran out of memory. You will be allowed to continue, however, it is recommended that you either reduce your video settings until this message no longer occurs or you will be asked to restart the game with lower video settings. If you ignore this error and continue playing without altering your settings you will likely encounter texture corruption and/or system instability.

Automatic Video Settings Fallbacks: When an advanced video setting fails to apply, the setting may be set back to a safe default. Anti-aliasing will fall back to NONE if the allocation of a multi-sampled FBO fails. Texture Cache will fall back to SMALL when the allocation of a large texture cache fails. Texture Detail will fall back to OFF when large page table allocations fail. On failure, these settings will automatically fall back to safe values without the need for user input.

Patch Changes / Fixes
-----------------------------
- Fixed crash from potentially having stale transcode jobs in flight when switching between texture cache sizes.
- Fixed crash from using SIMD optimized memcpy with a PBO pointer that is not 16-byte aligned.
- Fixed GPU transcode option always turning off when restarting the game.
- Fixed progression in Dead City where player could not advance through sliding door en route to the defibrillator upgrade.
- Fixed CPU feature detection.
- Fixed issues with launching MP by using double quotes around path name.
- Fixed lack of texture detail on parts of the screen at high resolutions due to limited feedback analysis buffer.
- Fixed thread stack space usage and freed up 700 MB of virtual address space.
- Re-enabled UBOs.
- Adjustments to default VDM values for balance.

EDIT: That texture detail option does work but as expected there's a lot of noise like artifacts due to the extreme upscaling and sharpening, I wouldn't recommend using it, not that performance heavy though despite the warnings about that.

http://i.minus.com/iMROpLZz52x54.png

Not many changes but all in all the patch and driver improvements have really improved, textures load in near instantly and AF no longer causes weird aritfacts (It probably does nothing at all, heh.) and performance is much better.

The images could probably be better but overall noise filtering / sharpening of default texture assets just works as a illusion to hide the blur, however said noise is instead very visible and distracting which is why said effect when used for film like moments in say horror titles is also rather disliked to use some form of example.

EDIT: It varies depending on individual taste though, I don't like filtering original assets like this compared to retexturing them completely or how to say it but some will appreciate the less noticeable blur. Smile
(Compare the LOD texture replacements from Oblivion with the 1.2 patch and it's noise filter trying to do the same.)

I'd settle for removing the green tint shit, but that'll probably never happen. Guess it's iD's own

It is now controlled in Options menu (or Settings menu; I don't remeber the exact name) with 'Texture Cache' switch.

It IMO looks more like shader (or 'fragment program' to be more precise) effect - 'part of my vision' feature than pre-baked texture artifact but sadly I don't know how to deal with that shit.

What the hell, they managed to make the textures look worse.

Assuming I ever play this game again, I'm making a mental note not to download this patch.

Something must have been wrong with the previous patch (And thus Update 2 from Skidrow above unless they managed to grab these replacement files already.) since a third update is now available albeit without any changelog so I don't know what it does.
(EDIT: Unless Steam quirked again and re-downloaded the updated just because.)

EDIT: Exe and the two patch archives, easy to maintain when the updated files aren't spread out.
(Like with Postal 3 and the five or so current patches spreading files everywhere, there was another one just two days ago and that game has improved tremendously by now.)

EDIT: Well here's the files anyway.

I've just tried the new "texture detail" option and it does looks quite a cheap (and bad) attempt to contain the bad image quality, like JB said:
