Posted: Sat, 26th Nov 2011 08:33 Post subject: Recommend me a good RTS playable in LAN! FPSs too! |
|
 |
This may be very well the second, third or even fourth time I consider creating a new topic, asking for suggestions or recommendations about a certain kind of games. Normally I just find something that catches my attention, or I just give up, but after hours of searching and even downloading a few games, I ended up with nothing that could fill the hole. So, this time I went through with it and here's my topic.
RTS:
OK, what I'm looking at the moment for is a real-time strategy game playable in true offline LAN, so I can play with my younger brother.
Now, here's the catch: by real-time strategy, I do mean real-time strategy in the likes of Age of Empires. No turn-based (Civilization series), grand-strategy (Paradox games), tactical (Total War games), 4x (space trading games), simulation (Anno/Settlers games), etc. Must have base-building, resource harvesting, and it would be very cool if it featured some kind of walls, towers edifications and a true rarity this days... random maps. Plus it setting should be either historical or at the very least modern, which means: no futuristic. Also, may it support widescreen resolutions, aka "no oldies" please. Already had my share off those back in the day. And it must be "Captain Hook approved".
Why I am asking for this? Mainly to rule out games either we don't like, already have or games we just don't feel like playing at the moment.
Here's a list of RTSs we already have, already played and/or don't want:
Spoiler: | We already have:
Age of Empires II - Gold Edition
Age of Empires III - Complete Collection
Age of Mythology - Gold Edition
Command & Conquer 3 - Deluxe Edition
Company of Heroes - Tales of Valor
Empire Earth II - Gold Edition
Rise of Nations - Gold Edition
R.U.S.E
Sins of a Solar Empire - Trinity
The Lord of the Rings - The Battle for Middle-Earth II - Complete
WarCraft III Battle Chest
Already had/not looking for:
Men of War
Order of War
Paradox games (Europa Universalis III, Hearts of Iron III; Victoria 2, etc)
ParaWorld Gold Edition
Rise of Nations: Rise of Legends
StarCraft Gold Edition
StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty
Star Ruler
Supreme Commander 2
Total War series
Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War
World In Conflict |
I'm open to suggestions, even for those outside of what I'm asking, as long as they weren't mentioned in the spoiler above and if they're really, really good.
FPS:
BTW, any first-person shooters, also playable in an offline LAN, with bot (A.I.) support in a modern setting?
Another list, this one for the FPSs that we already have, already played and/or don't want:
Spoiler: | We already have:
Battlefield 2 - Complete
Brink
Enemy Territory - Quake Wars
Section 8
Star Wars - Battlefront II
Already had/not looking for:
Battlefield 1942/Vietnam
Counter-Strike
Quake series
Unreal Tournament series |
In both lists there are games that don't qualify for what I'm asking, but are there for the sake of ruling out names.
Now, I know I'm asking a lot, and probably there won't even be many serious replys, but I think it's worth the risk.
So... please recommend away!

Red alert 2 and Yuris revenge. Very good games, i think you need to install IPX protocol on newer windows for it to work.

especially when your victory squad is around 300 or more of the brotherhood of nod suicide bomber guys but it works with any unit and if someone starts amassing victory squads just play super offensive as it'll take them nearly a full half hour or more (1 hour + for mammoth tank victory squad) also make sure you get the KANE edition not the normal version of the game as it adds more specialized versions of the standard armies, forget C&C 4 tiberium however, that one was complete and utter shit as well as RA:3. |
The C&C3 Deluxe Edition is really just the Tiberium Wars Kane Edition with the Kane's Wrath Expansion.
I and concur, the game is indeed great. I played a few hours yesterday on skirmish. The only thing that I was never a fan of, are the lack of some kind of walls. I played years Age of Empires II, both on my old PC, my new PC and even on my PS2! I and guess I couldn't get over the awesomeness those were. And the thrill of exploration a map. Something that can't be done in C&C3.
Man, either way, you just gave me the itch to play it again (C&C3)!
PS: For some reason this conversation is giving me a strong feeling of déjà vu.

Yes they are, but already had my share of them. Between the hassle it must be to install them on a modern PC, and the fact they're very old by today standards, I guess I'll pass.

the only walls i needed were the walls of units, man i loved doing a thousand unit victory squad with rocket troops, can hit land and air, nothing lived i can't quite remember off the top of my head but i believe if you victory squad with mammoth tanks they can block move orders for ground units (chokepoints)
and yeah, me too it always took a bit to get going over LAN but it was so worth it, just know that once the lag gets bad enough for the game to be played in stop motion someone's victory squad is coming, so you better pray yours is nearly there.
also, the last CIV game was awesome, i've heard it's also awesome on multi, but offline LAN, nah i doubt it the s who make videogames these days are too retarded to remember the good features.

I went googling and found this walls mod:
Spoiler: | For Tiberium Wars:
C&C3 Mini Mod @ http://www.cncden.com/cnc3_mods.shtml:
Quote: | C&C3 Mini Mod: This mod was created by DeeZire. It is based off of jonwil's walls mod. This mod adds buildable walls for all three faction in the C&C3 game. In addition to the walls, the mod also disables the intro movie, and fixes a couple of bugs in the AI object listings. Very easy to install. Instructions included in the download. Works for both the standard and Kane editions. |
For Kane's Wrath:
KW Wallmod @ http://forums.cncden.com/showthread.php?t=27062
Quote: | This is it, KW players and fans. The moment you have been waiting for is here. For the people who really wanted walls to be buildable in KW, I have done it with the help of Challenger13 after many test compilations getting walls to work in-game. All factions will have buildable walls at a cost of 100 in 3 seconds and there is a limit of extending the wall segments at a length of 6. |
|
I guess I'll give it a try latter.

You're right. A few mammoth thanks, and nothing passes.

The joys of LAN!

I also liked CIV V a lot, but between the late game unsupportable lag, and the lack of LAN (I guess they added through a patch a hotseat mode or something, but that stills needs fiddling with Steam), my choice when regarding a Civilization game will always drop on the IV plus expansions (and if desired one mod or another).[/quote]

yeah true, it's really hard to recommend the latest civ title to anyone who hasn't experienced it for a good 40+ hours on their own anyway, they literally won't know which actions are resulting in your wins (your friend in this case obviously) but it was a really good game and surprisingly deep with the variations of tactics for an TBS/RTS, i loved that one even though i wasn't a fan of the others so much.

I truly loved the tactical aspect of it. Positioning the shock troops on the front, the artillery on the back, flanking with the cavalry... It is way, way superior to the previous games, and their infamous Stacks of Doom. I miss playing it, but as I said, the lag was unsupportable for me. It was really incomprehensible. One minute, it was flying, but when reaching the 1700s/1800s (this in a marathon game), it was like flipping a switch: lag and more lag. Minutes and more minutes waiting. I guess that in a online or LAN game, the waiting would maybe be tolerable, but playing alone, it wasn't just worth it.

i never really bothered trying multi with the last civ one, but the victory squadding we'd always wind up doing in tiberium wars was the worst lag i've ever experienced, you'd get like a 5 second lag between issuing orders and them being carried out if not 10+ seconds when a victory squad was in motion.
one of our best matches was me with 500 rocket troops in my CTRL group 1 victory squad followed up by around 300 juggernaut artillery in CTRL group 2, brought one in from above, staggered #2 about a minute, my roomy threw his keyboard across the room it wiped his base out so quick.

Aliens versus Predator 2 = too old.
Earth 2150 = I forgot mentioning, but I played 2160. Didn't really liked it. Hell, I couldn't even figure out how to issue orders. Don't know if it was some kind of incompatibility with Windows 7 x64, but either way, it's too futuristic for what I'm looking for at the moment.

World in Conflict is (IMO) the funnest to play at big LAN parties. It's just pure chaos and the action starts up a lot faster then base building RTS's.

WiC doesn't have base building but thats the best part about it. You just spawn what units you want and fucking go at it. Then you got the awesome tactical options.. The game rocks. So many strategies to. Many people skip over buying infantry because they think tanks are the best option. Infantry fucking rape if you can give them cover in a forest. Of course, napalm stops that fast.
It's my favorite RTS. Just so many different winning strategies, and it still has great graphics. Nor do you have that stupid first couple minutes of the game building a stupid base. (This is why I think Starcraft II is a fucking joke. I realize they were going for old school appeal, but the game would be just as effective if it didn't have base building. In the end, you end up building a base on a map only in a certain way anyways. So why bother including it if everyone is always going to do the same thing regardless?)

yup, that's the one.
it is sort of ancient by now but... was a lot of fun still.

yeah i get why they didn't include base building or more than three units per side, it did create a really tactics intensive RTS game too, but.... those were kinda non-optional things for me, good for what it was, which was... not the type of game i'm very interested in.
