Well I was looking forward to this, but obviously it's completely imploded on itself.
It was hilarious watching the forums as people came to the realization that the beta bait and switch trick had not turned SOTS into an actual game.
It is a complete scam to sell this shit with a straight face. I also like the no refunds policy. All bases covered!

Seems as if anyone can string together a 3D engine and call it a game, then sell it and not be liable for anything. I'm so glad that the future of PC Gaming is here! (but don't worry, DLC has been included with the patch- maybe next DLC you'll get an options menu!)

Although I had suspected SOTS to be horribly buggy, most $40 games are at minimum, complete works. This is just a petty abuse of customers.

And if I may bash further, Kerberos still sucks balls at interface design. Arial and cheap gradients again. Razz

I agree that MOO2 remains king. Beyond all the mechanics, it had great personality, art and music. GalCiv2 would've been a true rival if it had had proper tactical battles (still damn good though). SOTS1 never hooked me: besides the unappealing art, the macro aspect always seemed quite watered down, a skeletal framework around the more robust combat system.

Now, I was gonna try SOTS2. Had already downloaded it, but seeing the first patch is somehow bigger than the game and that it fixes nothing in the massive trainwreck, I'll keep waiting. I expected the game to be a bit buggy, but this is overkill.

Patch fixed the star map crashes for me. Haven't tried any combat yet, so no idea how playable it is yet.

Right, managed to get into combat without it crashing now. Your own ships still don't have any AI though, so combat is kind of ass right now.

after 2 patches it still feels very unpolished and incomplete. the shipbuilder is actually a step back imho, despite the neat weapon test thingy and selectable weapons. after playing sots I earlier today for a couple hours im even more disappointed Sad

None at all. They won't turn to face targets, they won't pursue targets when told to,etc.

Wtf is going on with 4x games. First Stardock with beta of Elemental, now Kerberos with alpha of Sins. I'm seriously disappointed. I guess I'll look up this one in half a year, till then back to C-evo.

As I wrote on the last page they kinda ran out of time with the publisher, should that info be correct, I've no idea.

(Also explains those added 3GB of data from the first "patch" being mostly those immersion DLC packs.)

They care about having people purchase the game so the company can survive. They've already had to fire a number of employees over the past year.

Yeah that seems more like it I read a few posts just now that worded what I wrote above a bit differently, time wasn't as much of a problem as funding was, still it's hard to say exactly what has happened unless they do a announcement or something officially.

We'll see how the game shapes up in a while but it's a rather drastic move to release the game prematurely, hopefully most of it can be patched up though it could also make the situation worse.
(Well it kinda has but the game is still being updated and apparently a patch is planned for tomorrow as well.)

I quite often preorder indie games to get access to the beta or alpha versions and support the devs... this just turned out to be like that Smile

The only thing I'm unhappy about is that I thought the game would be done now but it's not so I'm gonna have to wait longer than I expected. Now that I know though I don't mind that much. They'll pull through eventually.

I'll just play SOTS1 again in the meantime... and battlefield 3... and skyrim... and all that other stuff.

Mini report from one of Kerberos team members on SOTS2 situation.

Looks like it was similar to Troika Games and Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines situation.

---

Me, I pre-ordered the game, launched it once to notice that even Options screen doesn't work, Steam prices for Russian region gave me a warm smile therefore I just went to play SOTS 1 Very Happy

I was gonna buy this one. Guess I'll wait until it's fixed and pick it up for 1/3 of the price instead Sad It's a bloody shame that small independant devs fuck it up for themselves like this. As a consumer you have to 'vote with your wallet' no matter how much you want to support them. It's the only thing they understand. Even independent devs needs to live up to expected quality norms.

They should've just made it a pre-order beta. They would've still gotten money, without any of the terrible reputation they're getting now. It'll be even worse once reviews start coming.

Were there any Paradox published games that have been sold as an official public beta ? Maybe they tried to go that route but Paradox denied it.

That was brilliant. I like Martin Cirulis. It's nice to see a CEO actually talking to fans, trying to assuage their fears.. and even taking the blame for screw ups. Just like the Larian CEO. SotS2 is a little too expensive for my tastes right now (given I rarely play 4x titles) but I'm definitely going to pick this up eventually.

Car salesman...

"Im sorry you bought our car mr smith, and I know the brakes dont really work that well right now and the headlights are dimmer than the person that let the car be sold in the first place but please just drive it around for the first 2 weeks or so and bare with us while we sort out the problems...

2 weeks later..

car salesman...

whatever happened to mr smith, he should of been back for repairs by now..

Site Manager..

Oh he died the other day, tried to stop from going over a cliff but his brakes gave out or something..

............. pffffftttttt

Its fair enough that he posted a reply about it all as the "CEO" but at end of day his whole team must of probably been more aware of the situation than he was to be honest, and they should be as much to blame as him as they could of said "wtf you doing boss, look at this shit here...."

I dunno, I think he had to put that out regardless, and its much easier to shove the blame on one person as a target of annoyance than spread the hatred over his whole team and paradox etc etc.. I call it damage limitation.

And now after a year the game is abandoned and still buggy and unfinished.

SotS1 was far from perfect at launch. Look at it now.

I have no doubts this game will become something great down the road.
