--stuff--
EDIT: Crysis had a similar problem on release though it's not exactly a good comparison, ArmA 2 also in the way these allow you to push the settings as you want but doing so will kill performance completely on most any PC.
EDIT: Ah right that announcement, forgot about it, likely a result of how GTA IV was received initially but I don't mean anything particular about that and it will likely be fine.
(Which is a unfortunate side effect of trying to take full advantage of both modern hardware and upcoming tech plus initially the game was a bit problematic even when scaled down.) |
There's a big difference between Crysis and GTA 4. Crysis ran so shit for many people because it actually looked stunning - if you look at its resource usage, it actually uses two cores (granted, only 2, but still more than other games in the same period) and GPU completely.
GTA4 runs shit because it's a console engine. No but's or anything, that's the cold hard truth. Wanna know how you can tell? Compare its CPU usage to its GPU usage - even my 9800GTX never got beyond 30-40% GPU usage, yet it maxed out my E8400 completely on both cores.
Reason for that is because on consoles, a lot more is done on the CPUs than strictly necessary. That's why console ports also often run like crap, they simply don't offload enough to our GPUs.
Crysis came out 6 months before my 9800GTX did, GTA4 more than 6 months after. Yet it's Crysis that got 100% GPU usage, not GTA4. And if you look at GTA4 objectively, it really does not look that great; it doesn't have proper AA, shadows aren't particularly impressive. It uses a lot of VRAM because of the area it renders, not because of the detail; also the reason why a GPU upgrade has 0 effect for that game, whether you run it on an 8800 or a 580, if you don't upgrade your CPU along with it, nothing will change

No. Only GTAIII was very badly optimized. Vice City, on the same hardware, ran very very well for its time, and so did San Andreas. They ran considerably better than III.

They all had very high hardware requirements for the PC compared to the console hardware they ran on and compared to other PC games. They improved a bit after GTA 3, but I remember GTA SA running poorly compared to other demanding PC games of the time.

You are obviosly taliking about v1.0. Version 1.07 has proper shadows, runs way better than 1.0 and better utilizes the hardware. Yes, it's after seven patches, but still, they didn't release the game and told "fuck you, this is everything you'll get, ktnxbye", they fixed the game and it works very well now.

i dont know it is with you people and GTA4 being badly optimised, it only proves how they shouldnt allow scaling it to the point where you can render the whole city at max detail.
Would you rather have it restricted ala mafia 2 and pretend the engine is very well optimized?

Proper shadows?
It has exactly the same "dotted" shadows and sprite effects to emulate "fading". That may work fine on blurry consoles from the couch, but it looks horrible on a PC at a high resolution.

I never said it was shit, I quite liked the game unlike many here, but the engine is shit, end of story.
EFLC did a lot for performance, yes (EFLC = 1.06, 1.07 followed that - so that's more than 18 months after the game's release), but shadows are still far from good and it still does not have proper AA nor does it fully utilise a GPU, so I stand by my point: It's a console engine with all the disadvantages that has on a PC. I might actually reinstall TBoGT and give that a go on my current system - I should be able to do 60 FPS just fine with this, but I'm betting it still won't.
I also wasn't discussing whether it runs well now, I was talking about release time.

Read my posts. Crysis renders the same distances, but looks better and runs with similar FPS, all because it uses all the hardware it can find rather than just your CPU.

Damn solid performance for a new IP. |
SHIPPED, not sold. But it has sold at least 2 million for sure.

This. To my knowledge, R* haven't even released sales figures yet, so any "number" is just a guess without any kind of evidence.

They released numbers with the press release announcing the PC version: http://ir.take2games.com/phoenix.zhtml?c=86428&p=irol-newsArticle&ID=1578005&highlight=
