The main plot point --> the assassins of kings gets resolved perfectly, triss is saved etc. The ending is sort of reminiscent of the first witcher where the main part is resolved but you pretty much get a picture of what's going to happen in the next installment.

Yeah what he said. What did you ppl want to happen in chapter 3 to call it a satisfying ending? |

its pretty obvious that yes, that is the direction cdp is going... and if he didnt want to be a part of it, the guy is dangerously close to earning a bit of my respect...

Obvious? Witcher 2 was even less linear than the first one. There is being cynical, then there is being well, figure out the rest.

felt smaller and more mainstreamed to me, like the translation from mass effect to mass effect2.. better combat, sure, but it felt so guided and the world was now so restrictive, all to make the game much simpler and 'less confusing'...

I didn't experience that. The first witcher was not an open world game by any means, and there was very minimal hand-holding in Witcher 2 IMO. Quest markers were very few and far between, as it should be in a game of this type.
I would say its more mainstream graphically, of course. A much different art style with a wider palette of colors and such to draw in more interest, which is welcome after the tiresome greys and browns and greens of the original. But they still did a great job of giving the game some pizzaz without making it look like an Oblivion fairy-talesque ripoff.
WItcher 1 had a bigger game world, sure, but that doesn't make it a better game. Do you have fond memories of traipsing back and forth between Vizima and the Swamps? I sure don't, and I played through that game 3 times.
Witcher 2, for my purposes, is one of the best games I've ever played.. up there with the original and such a welcome change from the standard Western "epic" RPGs we've grown accustomed to over the last decade.

I never expected that "The Witcher" sequel to be even BETTER than it's predecessor. But, for me, this happened. And not only that: TW2 is in my TOP 5 videogames of all time.
And if CDP Red will release a functional toolkit/editor for the game (not the Djinni crap or wassitcalled that was the TW1 kit)... I might skip the balduresque nostalgia and even push higher TW2 in my list of preferences.

I never said that a "comparaison" between the 2 should be placed here. In my top 5 games there's also Half-Life 2, so this info should be enough to clear it even more up.
Thus it's not about classifying RPG's, but about a certain game with it's overal qualities, no matter the genre, be it FPS, RTS, adventure etc.
EDIT
And concerning the combat in TW2, I find it better that the 1st, but only on paper. But in practice, a problem occurs: it becomes way too easy WAY TOO SOON.
See Gothic games. It sucked to be beaten up at start, but as you progress, it felt rewarding and most certainly NOT overpowered or broken to KICK EVERYONE'S ASS, later in the game. It was tweaked to make sense.
I also agree about the 3 different fighting styles. They should have kept them to add a bit of choice/complexity, making a bit of sense also. Even in RL you won't fight a fat enemy the way you fight a skinny agile enemy, that's for sure.

Come to think of it, I not only like, but I really love the combat system in the game.
It's all about having the liberty to dodge, parry and hit manually. It was bit too old-school-ish for me to see the floating text in TW1 (parry, dodge), when Geralt was standing still, yet the system decided that he just parry.
Yea, proabaly the rolling around stuff it a bit too much and makes the fight kinda way too easy. Maybe if the animation was a bit more thought-of, I'd choose jumping over opponents [TW1] or dodging sideways [Risen], perhaps the fighting would have been even more enjoyable.

Compared to the first game I dont think Witcher 2 was really all that "linear" or "restricive". It was just too dang short.

The first game is better, period. Yes, I love this one too, but no, it's not better than the first game, maybe almost the same, but I think the first game is much more enjoyable. Also, the combat system in this game was there just to be there for me. I loved the combat system in the first game and I will always remember it as a great game for the combat system too, among everything else. What about the the second game you may ask? Not really, I will remember it as a proper sequel, a great game, but I don't find everything as memorable as it was in the first game.

What I miss from the first game is entering a room, chaining a few combos then bathed in the afterglory of blood and chopped heads on the table and under the closet that was sooooo cool.

I have an issue with my game
I always have a bright spot on the screen in a certain direction. It's kinda like the sun in game, but it's not. It's always in the same direction, so if I turn my back to it, it's gone. I think it's an effect from the sun or something, but it shows everywhere, even in caves and such. Someone knows what it is? Running the latest ati driver (11.6)

ATI driver bug, use the latest CAP install (reboot necessary. - http://www.rage3d.com/cap/ technically fixed in 11.5 CAP5 but use the latest version if possible.)
It'll be fixed in the next driver release (It's fixed in the updated 11.6 RC1 beta, possibly a hotfix driver will be out shortly since that is not a 11.7 beta branch build.)

As usual, an interesting read. Still waiting for the nVidia driver containing the promised optimization for the game, btw.
_______
But there's a slight problem with the shadow setting in the tweak guide:
THERE IS actually an impact that's quite noticeable when playing with the shadow settings in game. And it's most visible in Flotsam's forest. On max setting the foliage and objects that cast shadows increases dramatically, thus the FPS drop is also more than noticeable. It's easy to test it and I have no clue why the shadow comparison screens were taken on such an inappropriate setting (only ONE shadow casting in the scene).
