Stupidly I decided that I wanted a new bit of software for my tablet/touchpad so I could do better hand writing recognition.. I googled around and found something that looked pretty good, it was 49$ which I figured was a bit over the top but noticed that they also had a "trial pay" option which, whilst I've never tried before, figured would be a cool option to get the app for free!

So I went with it.. I spent sometime looking around the trialpay site to see what options I had and found one that was free, a dating website, all I had to do was sign up for the free trial and I was done! To sign up for the trial I had to put in my CC details, something which didn't seem to odd as the outcome of the 7 day trial was a subscription that auto started (I figured they get their money from people just forgetting to cancel..)..

Turns out they get their money by taking a fuck ton of cash from your account and refusing the let you cancel the trial!

Ok, ok.. yeah.. I'm fucking moron.. I did at least get the software for "free" though Wink!

Rebills. You're not the first, and not the last to fall for this stuff. It's lucrative as hell on the backend if you can stop your merchant account from being shut down.

The annoying thing is that I could have just went with a 2 month lovefilm sub or something stupid like that which would have cost me almost nothing.. Plus, I'm a comp security expert.. and yet I can get done over by some fucktard company in Germany Sad..

Bah, I want revenge.. but.. probably not a good plan Razz

I'm starting to think that you're just making this all up cause you don't want to admit you wanted to join a dating site, so that "free" software is just an excuse.

This is why I never give out my CC info, and don't believe anything about free trials. If someone like [sYn] can get scammed I'm a walking 'mark'

Plus if it's a FREE trial, why do they need your credit card details!!?

So they make sure that you don't abuse the trial by being able to register under a new name infinitely many times (Or abuse it in some other way). It's a very common practice.

im still stuck at the part where you paid for a product... i mean got to the point where you were going to sign up for something and entered card details for it...

couldnt you just pirate it normally, and then decide if you wanted it? or was it such a rare and obscure program that it just doesnt exist on any of the internetz?

additionally i got scammed once. bought a hdd online... days went by, and nothing... emailed them.. 'yes yes, it will still be sent...'

googling informed me a day or 2 later than the company had troubles, and the korean owners up and left the country with all the money they had been taking in from orders over the past month or so and had never any intention of filling.

awesome Very Happy

great thing about CC's though... just go to your bank, tell em you got scammed, and they reverse the charges - which they did in my case. long as you have some proof that you got done over, it shouldnt be any problem.

Indeed it is. Quite a lot of online services ask for payment details prior to authorising a free trial, mainly so you can't keep opening accounts and abusing the free time on the service. In this case it seems they put a "on hold" payment onto my account which would have come out when my free trial was up (after 7 days) and I got a bit.. twitchy having read a lot of horror stories online about the company charging loads of times including after the accounts had closed down. After looking into things a bit more I've actually canceled my account now and deleted my profile.. as this was done way before the end of the free trial they don't have a leg to stand on if they try to push through the payment (which they claim they wont).

It was pretty obscure which is why I didn't pirate it, don't worry, I tried Wink! Still, assuming they do try to push through the payment my bank will no doubt tell them where to stick it and make sure the money doesn't go anywhere, so I'm not to fussed. They don't have any of my details other than my name and some old card details (I cancelled it to be sure!).. So all in all, think I'm pretty safe!

Your CC company will have you covered. Tell them it was a fraudulent charge, and they will reverse it.

Actually it's even easier. Just go to your bank and request your money back. The COMPANY will have to prove that you made a contract. It's not you that has to prove anything.

When I first read all that I thought they had already taken the money outta your account and ran. Glad to hear everything worked out. Good move in deleting the profile before the free trail is over.
