You're right about NPDRM stuff sabin, although @ Horrordee you dont need npdrm keys to sign an eboot, we can already do so with geohot tools. The problem is to sign one, you need to decrypt it first Smile

And @sabin1981 : and sadly it seems I've been totally out of the loop these days, I don't really have any news anymore about this ever since Sony scared everyone Sad

sabin1981 wrote:
I'm not completely sure, to be honest. It seems to me that PSN stuff (like patches/DLC/arcade) is signed/encrypted differently to retail EBOOTs.

That's Sony's power alright; fear. I truly believe they know they can't win on any legal grounds, but they can scare people with their money and strong-arm tactics. Now any hackers who WERE looking into more nefarious purposes than Georgie will be backing off, slinking into the shadows and waiting till the heat cools down. Such a shame. In the meantime, Sony will just keep dragging this shit through the courts in the hopes of grinding Geohot into bankruptcy with legal bills --- just like they did to Bleem and Lik-Sang, both of whom "won" their court cases but ended up becoming insolvent.

As for NPDRM? Sadly true Sad Georgie's tools can MAKE files with NPDRM, but it can't decrypt them (deliberate, per his own admission) so we're kinda stuck for patches/updates at the moment. At least until someone figures out how to retrieve the NPDRM keys (because I don't, for one second, believe Geohot/fail0verflow's announcement that they don't have the metldr key afterall) from metldr. Or, failing that, a way of loading backups on 3.55 as we do on 3.41. Loading without eboot modification = access to game updates.

Sony needs to lose hard for one, in the past they:
-Killed LikSang
-Killed Sega's Hardware division.
-Killed Bleem
-Killed HD-DVD
-Killed Laptops by making Exploding Batteries.
-Killed PC's with root-kits.
+ Other things I can't remember.

As much as I enjoy their consoles... there's no doubting that Sony are a pretty sadistic and ruthless company Sad However, in the interest of fairness;

HD-DVD killed itself. Too low capacity, not enough 1st-party publisher backing. Not to mention its own CREATOR abandoned it.

Sega are their own worst enemy. They refused to accept that DVD was the future and not only released a console with ZERO (absolutely ZERO) security or protection whatsoever, but they also created their own proprietary media format; the GD-ROM. Basically just an enhanced CD. Fantastic machine though, a true loss to the gaming world when that beastly device was killed off Sad

Hell yeah! I'd have Bill as my lawyer! Bill Shatner is defending his clients. Why is he defending his clients? He wants to hug his clients, he wants to envelop his clients. His clients. His clients. He wants to make love to his clients Laughing

In other news, Georgie's lawyers have issued their official statement to the press;

http://psx-scene.com/forums/f6/law-firms-defend-sonys-accusations-against-george-hotz-75976/

Quote:

“Make no mistake,” Stewart Kellar, intellectual property attorney and e-ttorney at law™ stated, “this
case is not about Sony attempting to protect its intellectual property or otherwise seek bona fide relief
from the court. Rather, it's an attempt from Sony to send a message that any individual using Sony
hardware in a way Sony does not deem appropriate will result in harsh legal consequences from a
multi-billion dollar company, irrespective of any legal basis or authority for such action.”

Mr. Heidari stated, “While most companies issue firmware upgrades to increase a product's abilities
over its life cycle, Sony has taken the unacceptable and draconian approach of decreasing the PS3's
capabilities by actually destroying a core feature of the PS3. Imagine taking in your car for an oil
change and having the manufacturer remove your car's air conditioner, radio, and half its horsepower
because of fears that other hypothetical individuals might abuse their vehicles. It just doesn't make
any sense, and it's a slap in the face to the consumers that put their support behind the product.” Mr.
Kellar proclaimed, “This case rests on Sony's misguided belief that it has the unfettered ability to
control how consumers use the products they legitimately purchase.”

I've not read much of this thread at all.
But how can the hackers win?
They hacked the ps3 for people to pirate games on it.
They released it to the public on how to hack the ps3.
How will they win?
I really cannot see it but, meh, what do i know??

3:00:53 PM flukes1: we have full control of lv1 and lv2 from our test application running as a normal pkg under gameos
3:01:21 PM flukes1: the issue with lv2 pokes causing shutdown was caused by some protection added in 3.55
3:01:28 PM flukes1: we found it and disabled it
3:02:15 PM flukes1: i’m not finished
3:02:38 PM flukes1: this is the bit you won’t like: there will be no public release
3:18:58 PM flukes1: as i said, ill release some info
3:20:11 PM flukes1: if you want BMs to run on 3.55 you need to compromise lv1 and lv2
3:22:43 PM flukes1: well I seriously wish I could release all this shit at no personal risk
3:22:53 PM flukes1: I like you guys but it’s not worth it
3:24:16 PM flukes1: if they know it was me, they can still say it was me and prove it by looking though my computer etc etc
3:24:22 PM flukes1: so no, i can’t just release it anonymously
3:24:41 PM flukes1: tbh though
3:25:03 PM flukes1: the only difficult part is disabling lv2 memory protection
3:25:16 PM flukes1: and that information will become public soon
3:34:00 PM flukes1: i’ll post a video on youtube on sunday when I get home
3:36:32 PM flukes1: game running from hdd under multiman
3:40:00 PM flukes1: i’ll do a video, i guess sony can’t kick off about that

Quote:
[17:54] <+flukes1> just a heads up: I will shortly be releasing info on how to get complete access to lv1 and lv2 from an application running under gameos
[17:54] <+jbc> sweet.
[17:54] <+flukes1> next few days probably, just want to see what happens with the court saga
[17:54] <@rck`d> flukes1: sploitz?
[17:54] <+flukes1> no
[17:54] <@rck`d> patched firmware? :/
[17:55] <+flukes1> yeah, plus a shitload of userland code
[17:55] <+flukes1> but the fw patches are tested and stable
[17:55] <+flukes1> modifying firmware is extremely easy compared to fully working lv1/lv2 peek poke

So it looks like he has done it, shame he won't be releasing the firmware/patch though.

I can understand flukes1,he has lives and he care about them,so we have not right to flame him for his decision, though, as long he will release enough info that will help other hackers to get the level of control he manage to gain,I think it will do the job...

The information on how to do it should be enough, I just hope he doesn't decide not to release that either.

Well if he releases a full tutorial to patch lv1, believe me, patching lv2 will be really easy, I won't be surprised if smbdy brave enough releases a CFw with patched lv2 a few days later.

Shame he's not releasing the app itself, but it's perfectly understandable. Like we've said; Sony's strongarm tactics are scaring people - nobody else wants to be on Sony's hitlist right now. Hopefully the INFO he releases is enough for someone else, someone less public, to turn it into something usable :\
