|
 |
So a week ago, getting sick of all the crashes, freezes and slowdowns that i got in Maya, i decided to (again) try some Linux.
First day - Fedora gnome. After the installation everything seemed fine (it booted with no errors yey!) so i decided to update the system. After the update though i notice SElinux giving me all kind of warnings, like files that are being accessed by the system and they shouldnt be. And after about 15 minutes of constant HDD activity SElinux is telling me that some file was accessed ~50.000 times !! I though its kinda of a loop between SElinux blocking it and the system trying to write it so i just disabled SElinux and restarted my system. But even after a reboot and about half an hour of waiting i still got constant HDD activity. So i decided to fuck Fedora in the butt and move on to another distribution.
Next day - OpenSUSE kde. After the installation - update the system. What i noticed is that this guy has 2 different update managers. So i click the little update notifier icon in the system tray - system freeze!. Great. Restart, click again, it works!, downloads ~200mb of updates, install, restart again. Check the system tray tool again, it says everything's up to date ^. Then i find another update tool hidden through the menus - check the system with that, it finds another ~200 mb of updates. HMM. Fishy.. So i update the system again and restart.. again. No particular problems after that except for minor kde bugs and some system slowdowns. It felt like OpenSUSE is actually slower than Vista (not sure if it was OpenSUSE's fault or KDE's fault) but anyway, after a few hours i decided i hate kde and its time to move on to the next distribution.
Next day - Ubuntu. This really is a great distribution. Fast boot times, no slowdowns, no problems AT ALL. Everything works. After about ~2 hours i had the system updated, latest drivers and all the applications installed and all i did was click click click click. I dont think i ever touched the terminal. At least not until i tried installing Maya. Maya comes in rpm's, ubuntu has deb's and some little convertion utility to convert those rpm's into deb's called Alien. After about ~3-4 hours of failed googleling trying to get that tool to work and convert me some Maya into deb i finnaly found the solution. Just treat those rpm's as regular archives and extract the content with Archive Manager. How dumb was that? I mean how dumb was I ? FUUU Alien i dont need you. So i installed Maya, got to know how libraries dependencies work, installed the required libraries, symlinked my new versions of libraries with the old versions required by Maya and voila, Maya works! That took a couple of hours (mostly googleling). After 10 minutes i get Mudbox to work as well! So proud But something was wrong. All i did was click click click. After a day of Ubuntu it felt like using Windows. What now? I know! Move on to the next distribution.
Next day - Debian stable. Erm.. This was one wasted day. This distribution is identical to Ubuntu! Of course it's not, but a newbie like me couldnt tell one single difference between them. Except for the slightly older packages and kernel versions. Had a problem with Debian though. My network connection kept disconnecting every 5 minutes. Such an annoyance. Time to move on. Not because i'm too lazy to try and find a solution. But because i wasnt gonna end up using this distribution anyway so whats the point.
Next day - ..........Slackware! woot! Installing all my apps, getting everything to work, including Maya and Mudbox, such fun! Actually on this distribution i skiped the -installing Maya dependencies- part and the program still started with no errors! Fun fun fun distro to work it. Except a few things.
- I checked "install everything" in Slackware installation and ended up with tons of applications wich ment either hardcore uninstalling of programs or a new installation.
- KDE - really Slackware? no official gnome support? sucks
- and the biggest problem - my network connection kept disconnecting every 5 minutes. Same as with Debian. What the ...?
Next day - stopping point - Arch Linux. I'm using it right now and i'm gonna stick with it. But i got some questions (yes, i know, no one's gonna answer) My network connection keeps disconnecting, this time randomly. Every ~5 minutes while i'm downloading, every 10 minutes while i'm browsing, and every hour if i'm not doing anything. What can i do?

Open up a shell when you notice it happen and "tail -100 /var/log/messages" can paste that in here if you want, should contain some information on the drops.

What are you doing in Maya? And maybe you just need a fresh Windows installation and see how Maya performs then?

I've personally never run the Linux version of Maya either, i'd suggest windows for 3D as well so you can get Zbrush/Mudbox on there as well without wine

I'm fiddling with ubuntu these days myself ^^ I'm trying to use ssh and proxy so that I could access the base of scientific articles that my uni has access to

Btw the disconnects last for ~1 second. On slack or debian they lasted ~5 seconds. No disconnects on Ubuntu except when runing qBitTorrent - that application would reset my router every.. ~5 mintues ! weird stuff..

I have three computers, 2 notebooks and one desktop. All are via wireless network with a zyxel router connected (AES WPA2).
One laptop is my lenovo T60 work laptop, the other one is my private Compal notebook (Windows 7 Professional, Gigabit Wireless pciexpress with atheros chipset) and my desktop pc has windows 7 x64 professional and a tp link wireless pci 54mbit card (i think atheros too).
I don't game with my work laptop so I never experienced any dropping wireless lan there.
But it seems as if my desktop pc is having more problems with online gaming than my laptop and I lose connection for 4-5 seconds (wireless drops and card automatically reconnects). With my USB wireless (netgear) I had the same problem but the reconnection to the router would take from 5 seconds to a restart :/
any ideas?

Could be IP conflict, try setting them up with static local Ips

change wifi channel, if that is even possible
if that won't help your zyxel may be simply crappy, get an tplink or linksys which u can flash with ddwrt so u can have all kinda settings to tune

Getting a new router is an option, but yeah I think with 3 computers you may awnna try setting up static IPs on them to see if it helps first, worth a go. Just set them to stat 101/102/103 or whereever you have your local Ips starting. I know once 4 are connecting to my Linksys it'll sometimes IP conflict.

As much as I love Nix, it's so hard to tell what may of gone wrong, Maya very well could be stable, but one of the 10 million libraries it's loading may be fubar. Did you have any issues with it up until hypershade? I'd say pop her open again and start applying textures out the ass, see if that's where a problem lies.

Well I spent my last week with fucking OpenBSD kernel IPSO6 (bought from Nokia), and let me fucking be clear about this shit - COMPILING ON UNIX IS A FUCKING PAIN IN THE ASS! CONFIGURE; GMAKE; GMAKE INSTALL; GMAKE EXPORT; DEPENDENCIES; ENVIRONMENTAL VARIABLES; BASH; CSH; TCSH; SH;
Other than that I had some time to check Ubuntu 10.10 and Kubuntu 10.10. Not sure why, but I'm starting to dislike (borderline hate) more and more. It lacks that charm that other distros have.
