You mean core 2 right? not dual core quad.

Exactly what cpu models are you looking at?

For applications that use 2 threads a Core 2 Duo @ 3GHz will be faster. For applications that use 4 threads a Core 2 Quad @ 2,5GHz will be faster.
Satisfied? This is the best answer you can get, seriously.

It really depends on the application. In some cases the Core 2 Quad will be almost twice as fast (video encoding), in other cases the Core 2 Duo will be 20% faster (most games available ATM).

To be honest, buy neither.
LGA775 is a platform of the past and is not worth forking out cash on upgrading right now..

Save cash until you can afford to buy a new cpu and motherboard and ram.

What is your full system spec right now?

Yeh, buying the faster dual core chip from what you have is not a good way to spend your cash.
Overclocking will give you some extra power. might need to spend on some cooling to get best results.

If you are not keen on that then a new more modern platform motherboard/cpu/ram is the most viable upgrade.
