Oh my... You know that there are literally tons of free ebooks with solved solutions...

Plus you don't need all the steps, because when you're solving some problems you need to figure out for yourself how to get from one point to another... I mean, that's the whole point of exercises... To figure things out for yourself, to have little AHA!TM moments...

Don't most Comp Sci books provide the answers on a CD or such anyway these days for you to compare code ? Seems like a pretty decent E business model though really even if JUST for the book solutions. ~1 client = ~1 book..so covering a moderate amount of topics wouldn't take a huge client base before you broke red.

True true, but I'm taking 2 classes on a 5 week quarter. I have 7 midterms and one final. That averages out to a midterm every 5 days. I'm at week 4 right now. At this point, I simply don't have time to figure stuff out, I need something like cramster to help me out >.>

No rly, if you let everything for the last second you'll have a hell of a time... trust me, I've been through that last yr and I needed to take two classes again...

It's not about the money. Even if he found the works for free, it's still pathetic. I can see someone wanting to take a peek at some hints for difficult questions and problems, I've done it myself, but when you give up from the get go and just use that crap, that's truly pathetic. And then boasting about it on the internets instead of cowering in shame... Rolling Eyes How low can you go?

How so? I'm so lost in the class that I can't do the simplest problems, and the professor doesn't care and doesn't have office hours. Do you want me to fail the class and blow $1000, or buy an online service that actually explains it to me for $50?

How about you go to the library and study? Or dig books or internet resources until you find a solution? We've all had the incompetent lecturer who can't teach and had to learn material ourselves. But being fed up in the mouth with the solutions is hardly the answer. Studying on your own is invaluable.

But I didn't give up from the get go. I've struggled through this class for 4 weeks. I landed a B on the first midterm and did all the homeworks on my own. Now come this Monday. I have a midterm this Friday. I start studying. And I don't understand anything. I ask questions in class. But the professor says he doesn't have time to answer them. Which he doesn't, because the entire course is 5 weeks. He has to cram all his lectures into those 5 weeks. So while I don't understand the basis of what he assumes we know, he is building onto more abstract stuff. I am lost and get no help. Don't even talk to me about the textbook, its the worst piece of trash I've ever had in college. Stats by Rice 3rd edition if you don't believe me.

So what do I do now Leo?

I do have library books. And you're right, maybe I should have studied them harder. But seeing these problems and the numbers to solve them makes so much more sense. Now I see how each variable is related to each other, how they transform and affect each other. Instead of a bunch of theory that doesn't make much sense, and that the lecturer never even covered.

You assume I have weeks and weeks to go through this shit. I don't. I have a test in Digital Logic design every Wednesday. I have stats every other Friday. The entire quarter is 5 weeks. Need I draw you a picture of how much I'm cramming here?

So in all these subjects you are due in a mid-term and have a shitty lecturer?

And OK, so you get the answers to specific questions you have. How does that help you for your mid-term? Or do you plan on learning by heart the method of solving these questions without really understanding? (aka "template" solving)

No. I now see how the theory works with NUMERICAL EXAMPLES. I see the theory that the textbook talks about be applied. I see example problems akin to the ones we will have on the midterm, explained and solved to me. I see how all the theory I've been studying looks like when the numbers are plugged in, what "tricks" I can use to simplify the problem so that I can solve it. I see something I can actually understand.

18 hours ago I was looking at the possibility of failing a class. Now I might actually pass. I wanted to exult. Forgive me if you've never had that feeling before.

Believe me, I had these in my first and second years before final exams (things are a little different here - midterms are not as important as the final exam). Especially before some of the more convoluted mathematics. Late night at the library with a small gang of students trying to crack the material and get the upper hand. Laughing

According to Websoc there is 13 people in the class. I got the 3rd highest grade in the class (a B) on the midterm, according to the curve of the test the professor published. So there are 10 other people who know even less stats than I do. And you see how little I know.

But you are correct. I should have sought help from my fellow students. I actually do know one of the kids in this class. I could give you 50 excuses for why I didn't, but at the end of the day you are correct. I made a mistake. And now I'm attempting to compensate for that mistake.

No no, I didn't mean organized study groups - I don't like these either. I meant a bunch of friends getting together for long hours studying - a group that studies. Wink

Eh why did you edit it out? Wink "PS Study groups aren't that common here..."

Because after I typed it out I realized how it sounded like a pathetic excuse for not forming a study group. Just because everyone else don't do it doesn't mean I shouldn't do it.

As for why I don't get together with friends to study, there are two very good reasons.
a) Most of my friends haven't taken this stats class yet.
b) It is summer session so all my friends are gone. The only people left on campus who I know also live with me, and they are taking a more basic form of stats.
