I'm not a prude or anything, but something has always been bothering me when watching movies. Why do so many US movies have sex scenes? I've watched a lot of movies (no life, escaping the boredom, loser, nerd etc.), so I've seen A LOT of sex scenes too. My conclusion is, 95% of them are useless and forced. Why the hell do I need to see a sex scene when it has zero relation to the matter depicted? Do people actually like the fake sounds/orgasms/movements? Is it not better to watch a softcore porn movie for that? Why not search for nude pics if you absolutely have to see that actress nekkid?
So in short. Why the hell does almost every director feel the need to make a sex scene, useful or not?

One answer, sex sells, and people are dumb, they usually aren't that interested in the main plot line, you throw a sex scene in, they get instantly interested in watching the movie, perhaps hoping for some other, more revealing sex scene.

personally i hate sex scenes in movies because generally they happen during action movies... and if sex is happening it means the explosions arent, hence it pisses me off. if i want ze sex ill get porn. if i watch a movie, then i either want a plot or a want explosions.
'romance' sex to drive a plot forward is ok with me, but those are usually more tastefully done anyway.

It's funny that people are bothered by sex scenes in movies, but not about scenes of violence and murder.
Both emulate real life in some extent, but sex is more realistic. Except perhaps of course in the small demography that frequent these forums and don't like sex scenes in movies?

thought i was pretty clear as to why i didnt like them... they tend to slow the film down and are often unnecessary... its not being bothered by them, its just finding them generally detrimental to the overall film.

Well if the purpose is portraying real life, we'd need to see people shitting too. My point was that most sex scenes are in just to be in. There have been movies I felt like "wtf was that scene about?". Maybe I've been corrupted by porn or something, but sex scenes in movies are mostly irritating than arousing imo.

I got pissed off when I watched Deep throat, they kept adding sex scenes just as the story was getting interesting.

Your argument would be valid if people were at all interested in shitting. Sex on the other hand is one of the world's largest industries for a reason.

yes exactly. theres an entire industry dedicated to it, and thats where it should stay. why would we want to/need to see crappy versions of it, in places it doesnt belong, when we could go to where it IS and get something decent.

the problem is that in most cases the sex scenes add absolutely nothing to the film
they mostly just make me cringe
every scene in a film has to have a purpose
in a film like libertine that had a lot of sex in it, it all added to the character and the description of the society
you can't just put a standalone scene like that in the middle to stop the narrative.. it's an intellectual commercial break
like the matrix sequels were slim on narrative and a collection of standalone action spectacles that had little to do with the story
it was a mess and would have been better as a single film with less faffing about

Sex is some of the most heavily censored you can get in american movies. I wonder how you can speak out against sex in movies, when I can't remember the last time I saw an action movie that focused on violence and then had people running around saying 'darn' and 'heck', cause of censoring.
Unnecessary sex in movies is annoying, it's there to sell tickets at the cost of something better(better story etc) and on that I agree. I personally have a bigger problem with the violence, cussing double-standard that you see in american censoring.
Sex is very much a natural part of our lives. So of course you will see a lot of it in movies.
I recommend; This Movie is Not Yet Rated

Actually the porn movie industry is so shit these days that to watch a quality fuck you need to go to Hollywood (and that's bad). With the exception of the hair excess, the porn made in the 60'ies-70'ies was a whole damn lot better.

Guys we can talk all we want about imitating real life or the need of sex scenes in films. But the one answer to the author of this thread is: SEX SELLS! One sex scene more with famous actress that includes boobs or teh beaver ;P equals more ticked sold. Easy math ...

...but then, removing the sex and dropping the rating down to pg13 sells even more tickets than that (depending on the film, naturally)
id rather put sex mostly down to the immaturity of filmmakers who just cant think of any other way to make their movie better, other than getting their lead actress to get her tits out.

you can say the same thing about plot.
how many good action films have been ruined by the pointless insertion of some half-baked shitty plot? pretty much 93% of the action films from the last decade or so id imagine
but thats the whole point... shoving unnecessary shit into a genre where its not needed... studios dumbing down a good plot in favor of making it faster with more action emphasis... killing action films with excess silly dialog and story... ruining my porn by trying to add a story script... although the one based on 300 was pretty hilarious...

I don't mind a woman stripping or more making out, but if there is a dick involved then meh... Rather make it pg13

Didn't mean dick per se, just a hardcore with a man and a woman involved. But since you asked, pick any Viggo Mortensen's movie.
