This game is the ultimate rage test. They should use this at human aggression surveys.

The achievements seem a bit buggy - got two stealth related ones (75 avoidances / 75 stealth takedowns) even tho I've pretty much killed everyone so far.

Just finished it.
From a sheer plot/dialogue/espionage movie perspective - this game is EPIC. By the end of it all I was so confused as to who's motives lied where I could barely remember my own fucking name. This game definitely sets the bar in terms of branching dialogue and REAL decisions and consequences, where there never really is a wrong answer, and each choice is just as desirable as the next. Epic. Definitely have to replay this about 6 or 7 times to really see it all I'm guessing. The amount of branching is just fucking unbelievable.
From a gameplay/technical perspective - this game is fairly mediocre to be honest. Glitchy camera, poorly designed controls (especially using the mouse to guide the right hand computer hack), stupid boss fights (they absorb bullets like a sponge, unlimited spawning henchmen). The skill system is equally as unimpressive in my opinion. There's really not much variety working your way up the tree.
Gameplay - 6/10
Story/Replay - 9/10
Now that I've beat it on hard- I'm going to restart as a Recruit but on medium, as hard was simply too frustrating and unbalanced.
I'm running the Skidrow release, but with a legitimate serial, thus uncracked, and the stuttering and spastic camera have been driving me crazy. Any fix for this?
I can never be free, because the shackles I wear can't be touched or be seen.

Having fun so far, but the stuttering is really getting annoying especially when I end up running into a camera's FOV. Any fixes?

To all of you raging about the hacking minigame - you do know there is a skill that lets you bypass it by using emp blasts, right? The same skill tree also makes those hacking sequences easier + there are special gloves that reduce the difficulty of the minigames as well.
Of course there are some plot computers that can't be bypassed but there aren't many.
I'm loving the game - can't wait to replay and be a jerk/kill everyone.
Spoiler: | I'm in the middle of Rome (doing it last) Somehow i've maxed out my relationship meter with that dude in the flashforward. How will this influence the plot? Cause my current character always positions himself like the goody-goody anti-Halbec agent |

Apparent Alpha Protocol dev goes mental, says game should have been “cancelled”
“There was a ton of work put into this game. The problem is that it was a ton of undirected work, or work on things that were just stupid. The Executive Producer for the game, Chris Parker (also an owner of the company), seemed to think he was the world’s greatest designer ever, and created all these absolutely shitty systems and wouldn’t listen to any of the real designers or devs about things that just didn’t work. And you can’t exactly argue with one of the owners of the company when he doesn’t want to listen. He basically took over the game and dictated exactly how everything would work (or not work, as the case may be). The other producers realized this early on and just gave up, leaving Parker to micromanage all the designers and programmers directly.
“Sega also was a factor, because they kept changing the design requirements (yes they had heavy influence there), which never gave the producers and designers time to actually decide on one set of features to make and polish. The blame is still mostly Obsidian’s because the execution was absolutely terrible, and it was obvious 2 years ago that this game should have been scrapped. Instead, though, they focused on adding still more features and never fixed the ones they already had. That is a recipe for tons of bugs and no polish… as is obvious.
“This game was just an absolute failure of production, and it’s no wonder that so many of the developers left the company, even after the 40% staff layoffs. I am still happy about some of Obsidian’s other current projects, New Vegas included, because they are going pretty well. Their big unannounced project is looking great and is already much better than AP ever was, and that may end up being the game that everyone was looking for with AP.
“Sega should have canceled AP instead of Aliens.”

Nah, my only serious complaints for this game are not that good enemy AI and bad animations. Improve on that and it's a much better game already. I wouldn't call it so bad it should have been canceled. Despite those flaws it's still great, so I don't know where all that huge negativity comes from.
Granted, I haven't even played through half of the game to make any serious judgment, but it's fun to play with a great spy action-thriller setting...

If you ask me, I'd say AP shipped in exactly the same condition Vampire Bloodlines did; broken graphics, glitchy animations, miscellaneous bugs and issues, and some performance hiccups. If you can look passed the technical issues, I honestly believe people will find a gem of a game.
... but that's just my opinion.

I'd still say that Alpha Protocol is a great deal tighter overall. There is no real "drop-off" point like what happens in Bloodlines during/after the Nosferatu sewers where stuff just goes downhill.
But generally speaking, I agree with you. They are similar in that.

heres a funny one... even after applying the mousesmoothing fixes on my legit steam install of AP on my main rig i get jerkiness,
amd am2 5200 X2 6gb ddr2 , ati 5750(1gb) (running at 1280/720)
BUT...
my laptop... amd turion,3gb ddr2, nv8400m gs (128mb) (running the game at 1024/768)
THE GAME IS SMOOTH AS SILK, without applying mouse smoothing fixes
i was part of the beta test for NWN2(which was kinda buggy)... but holy fuck, obsidian..what is the score here LOL
when there is no more room in hell, the D34D will walk the earth

I tried it too for an hour, I'm really sad and pissed I must join the hate crowd. A good game shouldn't force the gamer to overlook all the shitty aspects to enjoy. The better aspects, as named previously, are not strong enough to overshadow the shitstorm going on in this game. After witnessing this game, I have zero hopes for New Vegas. Leaving isometric view did not do Obsidian any good.
I'm not going to claim the Obsidian stamp was a seal of excellence, it never was, but they always made great yet slighlty flawed games. This one however will damage their reputation imo.

Ah Vampires, that was a diamond in the rough if there ever was one.
I don't think this game deserves the should of been canceled tag, but I really think Obsidian needs to take a hard look into how they dev their games. They had four years to make this, it was delayed more than once to "polish" it and this was the result? Also the fact this is their third bugged up the ass game they've made. Personally, I'm able to look past the issues and enjoy the great story and characters, but this isn't a respectable way to release a product. If this continues maybe the should just focus on writing and get someone else to actually build the games for them.

Ok so its got bugs but the story line is great.Even worthy of a possible movie script here.I am willing to accept the mouse stutter at times.I am sure they will patch it.Aside from that I really like the game so far.You can tell they got Mass Effect inspiration for sure.Big thumbs up.

My only issues are obvious console port issues:
-shitty checkpoint system (saving game only copies last autosave to different save slot)
-GUI designed for consoles, and not adapted to PC (why no hotkeys for key abilities or gadgets, similar to ME?)
-keyboard mapping not done intuitively (why can't ESC exit ability, intel, inventory or any other screen, etc...)
And mouse "twiching", which mostly happens when new textures load ( both crackfix/retail), usually at specific places in level (just for a fraction of second). There is also general mouse shuttering, but only if fps is not perfect (if frame rate is not around 60fps).
.
As for combat mechanics, they are pretty fine for me. As long as you understand this is NOT A SHOOTER. Just because you can point cursor on the enemy doesn't mean bullet will go there. Clear your mind... Not a shooter. Got it?
If that psychological gap can be bridged, game is pretty fun. If crosshair is too big, don't aim for the head, aim it in such way it's most likely to hit (try to have as much enemy body inside crosshair as possible), change position, or just use critical hit zooming.
^Unfortunately, many mainstream FPS/TPS players who who expect stealthy shooter with dialogs won't be able to bridge this gap. I guess that's probably reason why Bioware dropped similar mechanic from ME1 when making ME2 and has "gone mainstream". I guess it's easier that way and more commercial. Personally, I like the game the way it is.

All very valid points, that bugged me as well - small things that affect the whole feel of the game, especially the gadgets/abilities selection.
Not once did I run into the mouse stutter issues that seems to affect many people though. I had the constant stuttering and delays (if you browse the weapon market for example) that were fixed with crack fix, but not the mouse issue. My FPS probably doesn't go below the threshold.
I still get the occasional hitch for a second or two before entering new large areas (this doesn't have anything to do with the mouse), but that's a non-issue.
From the technical side, I wouldn't mind fixed AA support and alt-tabbing - sometimes the game won't restore after you minimize it.

About alt-tabing, here is workaround I use:
-do alt-enter, to make game windowed
-then alt-tab

This game has the worst AI and gameplay i've seen in years. They all just mindlessly run at you guns blazing or sit with their backs at you facing the other way while in cover.
Can't believe i put up with 8 hours of this shit and finished the game.
The levels are linear beyond belief, you're always stuck to a single path, and every level in the amazing 4 types of scenarios is a rehash of the previous one.
Worse graphics than GeoW, a game released how many years ago?
Technically broken, random fps drops, freezes in purchase lists or whenever the game autosaves.
Storywise, i've got to say i was incredibly dissapointed in the ending, the cutscene and overall dialogue aspect of the game. You never really know what you're going to say since the dialogue options are not clear at all.
This is one of those pick up, finish, forget titles for me. Hated the gameplay, i was really hoping for the story to make up for it, but it just came off as incredibly dissapointing.
I could go on forever.
Stop comparing this piece of shit with Bloodlines.

Guys who finished the game - could you list most of the major decisions you made and how it all ended?
Spoiler: |
Started as Recruit - impressed everyone during the training - did the extra stuff
Saudi Arabia - let the faggot live - don't remember any other major choices
Tai-Pei - impressed Scarlet - sent her everything on Halbec. Erased my bugs from the G22 servers made friends with Albatross. Got the assassination files instead of the riots - the president still got shot but survived. Let the Chinese double agen live.
Moscow - Impressed Grigori - did his side-missions - Met with the German chick - didn't attack her but never heard from them again. Let Sis live - this caused Albatross to offer allegiance - I accepted. Believed Surkov - Saved Albatross during the assault of the arms-dealer's villa - spared the crazy russian dude and then spared Surkov - because he was anti-Halbec.
Rome - Always talked with that old spy - never attacked him - got his respect up. Chose to disarm the bombs in the end - Madison died.
Banged Mina, Banged Scarlet
Met with Albatross, Scarlet and Shaheed. All agreed to help. Shaheed offered to betray my country - I refused.
In the endgame - Scarlet turned out to be the assassin - spared her and she helped me fight out of the base, Mina turned out to be the traitorous handler in Saudi Arabia - saved her. Convienced Parker to help me with the fies. Also that faggot Leyland offered to join him - i refused. In the end i shot him. Talked to the old spy and left on a boat with Mina.

Seems like a lot of variables in this one - let's try to figure some out.

Spoiler: |
Operative - Impressed 2/3, did 2/3 side quests
Saudi Arabia - Threw Shaheed off the cliff
Moscow - Threatened Grigori, got the info, met german chick, never met Sis, shot Surkov in the leg, never met Albatross, killed crazy fag russian.
Rome - Defied old spy guy every chance i got, was an ass to everyone, disarmed bombs, madison died
Tai Pei - Gained Mina's hatred, cause i killed an entire villa of those cops, more being an ass, planted the bugs on G22 servers, told Albatross to fuck off, still no Sis. Got assassination files, president lives, riots on, chinese double agent lives.
Endgame - Contacted Scarlet, said she'd meet up with me, never did. After getting captured, banged the russian chick while i was strapped to the bed.
Chen or whatever the hell his name was told me she was the assassin, mina got captured and killed, never saw the cutscene, owell, i went after leyland and saved the russian chick instead.
After Leyland offered me a job i told him no, shot him in the face and left on the boat alone, no idea where the fuck the russian chick went, she didn't say anything.
Gay ending, gay story. |
