You can't go wrong with MotB. I guarantee that. You don't need the main story to start motb. Also nwn2 was more entertaining than nwn1. By a mile.

Finished, took me around 14 hours. Enjoyed it quite a bit Will be interesting to see if any of this will effect DA2.
Spoiler: | I guess I got the "good" ending. Saved the city, sacrificed the Keep [it was rebuilt in 5 years anyway, and this way the whole country loves my ass and the Wardens are in much better condition]. Also let the Messenger & Architect dark spawn live. |

I think there's no way they made this expansion in 4 months, I think they've been working on it since the PC version was finished in spring-summer 2009 but the release was pushed to be simultaneous with the consoles.
Still I feel a higher texture setting should've been made.. I tried all the HD packs but they don't feel right (too grainy mostly), not like it would've been if Bioware made them.
Anyway it's a great expansion so far.
Playing on hard and having more fun with the Orlesian elf rogue since I feel the fights are more of a challenge, with my imported human noble warrior I felt I could steamroll the first hour or two so I'll probably play it after I'm done with the Orlesian.

Played a bit and it´s more of the same (that´s enough for me, DAO is goty material imho), but as someone has pointed above it´s a piece of cake for a 6 year old kid. I barely lost 1/10 of health in the first part of the game (just defeated the first boss) playing in hard...main module was way more challenging than this.
New spells/habilities are nice, but they only contribute to unbalance the game even more. Nice try, but seriously, it needs some serious patching work.

Ballance is really fucked up. Slaying arrow, hide in shadows, cone of cold.... Every unbalanced ability from original DA is still here and because of very high starting lvl, its all that you use through whole game.

Yup, my rogue (lvl 23 starting) probably could of soloed everything. Super easy for that class.
One thing that always bugged me about this series is you're always just getting swarmed with hordes. It gets so boring after a few hours.

Too easy, too hard.. its an interesting topic, but it is also quite hard to judge objectively.
Someone might have a super imba character / party and would obviously feel the game is too easy. Others might not have gone down the same path of choices, ending up with a somewhat inferior party and could very well find the same encounters a lot more challenging.
A game like DAO can't really be classified as simply as: "easy" or "hard", as the actual difficulty depends on quite a lot of various factors. Yes, there obviously are skill / class combinations, that are imbalanced and i'm sure that there are also choices that would make your life real hard in the game.
This was true for the base game, and i'm sure it is also true for the expansion.

Thing is, before, the game presetend a challange from time to time - on hard - now it doesn't. Nightmare doesn't really help much either. The idea behind character advancement kinda means that you choose some abilties and forgo others and you use your wits and planning to decide which are taken and which aren't. If the game is a walk in the park unless you gimp your character, then what's the point?
I've tried several different teams and all of them easily blow through everything.
As far as i'm concerned, the game should have been more difficult, esspecially since there seems to be more emphasis of fighting then anything else, this time. There are less dialogues, the npc interaction is gimped and fighting clearly seems to be a focus of the game so why not at least make it entertaining?
Generally, while i would give the original something around 8.5/10, perhaps even a 9/10, the expansion is a 7-7.5/10 for the time being (haven't finished it yet, so perhaps my opinion will change). The only thing i like more is, indeed, the zone design, which is better by far, but most other aspects of the game are gimped in one way or another when compared to the original DA:O. I understand it's an expansion, but still, i would prefer it to come at the end of the year and offer more, instead of now, lowering the quality of the franchise.

I think it's good enough, but I was never a gamer who played RPG's on nightmare or hardcore. Normal is a bit easy, but the difficulty above that offers me enough challenge. Just with any other RPG though, you get overpowered at the end. That's inevitable in RPG's since a gamer who only does the main quests would not be able to finish the game.

Exactly, geme isn't too hard/easy. Its just unballanced. For instance dexterity based fighter/rogue gains all of the best abilities. Dual fighting and bows, while strenght based gains acces to stronger armours, average shield fighting tree and week large weapons tree.
And its true that you need to make it fun yourself. I've, for instance, abandoned my rogue and started playing bow/large weapons/fighter just so its bigger challange.

I have played nightmare all along. My very first DA:O run was on nm. And yes, it is easy. I started with a level 18. When I finished I was a killing machine, and I played without oghren (somewhat of a tank, and good CC) all long. Never picked up the elven mage girl either, cause I dislike both characters. So I played most of the game with two rogues and a purposely gimped mage.
It was lik a hot butter through knife.

i started a new character for the expansion, wanted to play an anti-mage warrior kinda guy, with dual wield and templar abilities and stuff, thought i could use some knockdown resistance as well - too bad DW tree doesnt have it. so i took indomitable from the 2h tree, and you cant even activate the ability without having a 2h weapon equipped. something like this is what i loved in NWN2 and similar dnd games where you can pick up a level or a low level ability that wouldnt normally be core to you, but what might come in handy while doing your thing. none of that here, only the streamlined 'max everything' character development |
Oh man, DA ruleset can't even touch DnD 3.5 (which I think was the best combat DnD version to date).
