 All the time.  You gain exp and cash from fights/side-quests which you can then use to increase your skills (the games have a pretty expansive skill-tree that shames most other RPGs) and buy news ships/upgrades/weapons.   Gameplay is a BIT like Homeworld, only without the base building or resource gathering.   If you've ever played "Nexus - The Jupiter Incident" then you'd be right at home with Star Wolves.

 Just remember to give it a little time!  It's rough around the edges and takes a while getting used to, but is definitely fun and rewarding mate.
