|
 |
Quote: | Windows Phone 7 Series, originally codenamed "Photon"[2], is an upcoming version of the Windows Mobile operating system developed by Microsoft. It is planned for release in late 2010 |
note: this is not a real device, just a mock up of what one might look like. M$ is not getting into the hardware game
Quote: | Windows Phone 7 Series is the successor to Microsoft's line of Windows Mobile phone operating systems. It's based on the Windows CE 6 kernel, like the Zune HD, while current versions of Windows Mobile are based on Windows CE 5. Microsoft announced the new OS at Mobile World Congress 2010 in Barcelona, and says that the first handsets to run it are supposed to be released by the holiday shopping season of this year.
The visual and underlying differences in the operating system are almost too numerous to mention, including a completely (and we do mean completely) upended user interface, an emphasis on finger-based touchscreen input, deep social networking integration, fully branded and expansive Zune and Xbox components, and extremely strict hardware requirements for partners. A couple familiar touchstones from the past include plans for Outlook and Office support, as well as licensing to a wide variety of third party hardware vendors -- despite the name change, Microsoft still isn't building any phones itself.
Part of what makes Windows Phone 7 Series a departure for Microsoft is that the company is taking a much bigger role in dictating what hardware is allowed to run the OS. While we still haven't seen an actual device produced by a manufacturer for retail (the demo unit being shown off is a prototype slab allegedly made by Garmin-Asus, but not a device that might ever come to market), Microsoft has a very clear picture of what they want these units to be built like. Still, while the company is laying down the ground rules in an attempt to create a more consistent experience across phones, it doesn't mean there won't be variety. You'll see variation in devices (yes, some with and some without a keyboard), but there will be a much more steady tone in the nature of Windows Phone 7 Series handsets. Here's a look at some of the minimum specs detailed to us thus far:
* Large WVGA screen with a single aspect ratio (which means BlackBerry-style devices won't be readily available to begin with)
* Five specific hardware buttons required: Start, back, search (a dedicated Bing button), camera button, and power -- no more, no less
* Capacitive multitouch
* CPU and GPU requirements (beginning with Qualcomm's Snapdragon as the go-to processor)
* WiFi
* AGPS
* Accelerometer
* FM radio
* High resolution camera

Could be interesting to see what handsets start coming out closer to the end of the year. Likely I'll have my current phone for the next couple of years anyways, so there should be lots to choose from when I need a new one.

I have currently a modded 6.5.5 rom on my Touch Pro 2 and... it sucks. My keyboard is reacting very slowly, there is some weird quickmenu, it is NOT faster than the official 6.5 and I just don't like how the maker changed the colors. (+ tons of sucky apps) (((((
I hate it when the kids think that they have a better feel for design than professionals

I have 6.5 on my Omnia II, using SPD Shell 3.5 for the interface and S2U2 for the slide to unlock (and S2P for the mp3 integration with lock screen too), everything is pretty smooth. Omnia II reserves a ton of the RAM for system functions (radio, camera, etc) so you need to watch running out of what's left.
but yeah, I'm using the default samsung keyboard still... it's not bad but I probably suck at being fast at typing too.

Dear lord, what has Microsoft done!? This piece of shit is the same shit as Apple! No copypasta, no multitasking; hell, they even talk about no application but the crap panels that you stick on the front page (which are widgets - not serious programs). My god, this is pure piece of shit!
@Pumpy
WM 6.5.5 is still in beta and is very slow. 6.5 or 6.1 is recommended.

Also, the pic in the second post is not correct. This is based on CE7, not CE6, and no CE5.x application works on CE7.

EDITED:
I think the main problem is still there, the interface it´schoppy at times, from what I can see in videos.
Just put something as smooth as the iphone out, and you´ll have a possible buyer here.
After using the iphone I can´t go back to any of the other devices/os...
The smoothness of the iphone is irreplaceable for me.
I bought an HTC Magic last year and it´s a cool OS, but it´s very far of how good the iphone works.
I just don´t get it, can´t everyone see that the iphone revolutionize the interface market because it´s smooth??
It´s not about the look of it only...
They keep putting devices on the market that feel choppy and the touch screen makes you feel that you must be concentrated to work properly.
I want a new phone, but the screen must be as good as the iphone one.

The interface is in pre beta state, that's why. Devices are expected in holidays 2010.

The hardware IS fast enough! Just look at the 500mhz htc phones with android. They run smooth. 500mhz and windows mobile? choppy as hell. THAT IS SO ANNOYING!
@sutura:
The Touch HD2 is very smooth and it has a capacitive display like the iphone. but it proved just one more time, that windows mobile 6.x is a pain in the butt

It doesn't matter, pain or not, it is still the most powerful OS. iPhone? Don't make me laugh. And sadly, this WM7 crap is same shit as iPhone.

What defines a powerful OS??
With the best apps/games around it´s very clear what the best OS is...
WM, now that is a laugh.
And yes, the new devices have capacitive screens, but still feel like shit.
My HTC Magic has capacative, but if I compare it with my iphone it´s a joke.
And don´t waste your breath saying that it is as smooth, it´s simply not.

What makes an OS powerful is what it allows you to do, not the games that are on it, and the iPhone is pathetic at that. I am sorry, crack your OS to be able to run software?

Multitask
Flash device with custom roms that give me completely different feel and look
Better hardware, etc.
BTW, I've been running Android on my Diamond for a few days now, it is really coming along. In a few months time, I will be able to make it my default OS.

You cannot have the browser open with the SMS application;
You cannot have the browser open, download an app, open the file explorer (while the browser is running), install the cab (while explorer and browser are running), run the app/game (while the explorer and browser are running);
You cannot talk on Skype while browsing the web;
You cannot talk on Skype while playing games;
You cannot talk on Skype while sending SMS messages;
You cannot talk on phone while doing any of the above;
You cannot talk on Skype/phone while navigating on GPS;
etc.
Whoa, what an awesome OS!
Basically, any app that should be run in the background while you do other stuff is impossible. Music is the sole exception because it would have been too much to not allow that. You see, the core of the OS supports multitasking just fine (it is OS X after all), but Apple dumbos have decided that their users are too stupid to understand what that is, so they have disabled it.

For starters, in WM if you take away all the UI´s that manufacturers develop for the system it´s just pure shit.
And the way you talk I can tell that you don´t know the iphone well enough.
Multitasking / Sype+ ... - Install Backgrounder
SMS while in browser - Install QuickReply or bitesms or whatever...
Change the look, just install themes that completely change the iphone UI, with folders or whatever, there´s dozens of them.
You must not be aware of the fantastic community that the iphone have, and like xda for the WM, there are great forums about the iphone that correct all the flaws that come out-of-the-box.
And I have to say, the catalogue of games/apps for the iphone completely aniquilates any other mobile phone platform.
It´s like comparing games on Windows and on OSX.

That´s the point, I don´t need a PSP!
I have a phone that satisfies all my portable gaming needs.
When I had a PSP I played mostly at home cuz I didn´t have my psp with me.
My mobile phone it´s always with me.

The worst thing about buying an HTC or any other brand is that you´ll have the latest product for about 2/3 months.
There´s always a new model in the corner... FUCK THAT!
At least when I buy an iphone I know that for at least one year I have the top of the line model.
