After playing AC2 I thought Ubi's on a good road, but after this... Ubi should learn how to make games.
Playing with the soldier is chaotic, bad design and with the Navi things are still as bad, but this time from a melee class point of view. They didn't even bother to think the classes. I mean fuck! playing as navi and you find the bow the best choice where as a soldier you miss the melee.
Not a bad game though, just coming from the same studio that made great games like PoP and SC, it feels like the guy'n'galls didn't even try.
It's sad becouse they could have done some cool things with the navi, and if they would have just tweaked the soldier a bit, the game would have been great and Ubi would have proven that they can still make good and innovative games.

No cover system yet again, game looks acceptable for 2005-6 but I repeat no cover system, a system that has been around since Kill Switch in 2003 or even earlier in 2000 with Time Crisis and a concept considered essential to a combat game.

Cover around what? Plants? Trees
Or maybe you want them to conveniently have destroyed walls scattered around everywhere (ala Gears of Crap 1&2) so you'd have some silly little cover system?

A Dune misquote but apt I think:
"Change jars something deep inside, allowing people to grow. Without change something sleeps inside us, and seldom awakens."
Things never evolving become grey and tired, if demanding evolution of games that cost an average $50 is 'bitching' rather than constructive criticism then using your argument games would have remained essentially a 2d multi-directional shooter ala Galaxy Quest.
As for using cover in jungles how do you think soldiers coped in Burma, Vietnam and South America?

Cover systems are the devolution of gaming, requiring no tactics. "Sit/duck behind cover and wait for health to regain."

fail:
Just because that's what you might do, as opposed to using cover for its true purpose which is to stay alive.
Ranting against cover; the single most important element of combat after knowing your weapon, lol.
Next you'll suggest that using cover is spawn camping heh.

against an enemy that shoots at them, yes. but what if ~90% of your foes are melee based? "oh noez, a tiger! quick, jump behind a tree!"
play the game before you rant about it. |
Ya, and also vegetation here is destructible, so would be very stupid to hide behind a tree lol, especially when a huge thing runs toward your "cover".

The lack of a cover system doesn't bother me that much as the lack of a precise aiming system.

Well... Ubisoft Montreal is absolutely massive, so it's likely not the same core design team as those titles.

Good point. Still given that this is basically a new IP, you'd think they would have use theirs best and brightest.

I get the impression that Twobells (or his online persona distinct from the real individual ) just expects every third person game to have a cover system regardless of whether it would actually enhance gameplay.
Demanding evolution of games indeed.

Hi AM, good you see you back posting after being absent a while.

I really hope it's very distinct, because I've seen him, on many occasions, refer to himself in third person.

Just read the IGN review. Were they reviewing some different game, not the one we're playing? I'm two hours into it and loving what I see and how it feels, even w/o 3D.
Today I didn't even need to use my AK. I gotta say it was a good day. (c) - Ice Cube

Apologies tio INatan: TB has played a lot more of AVATAR and his initial remarks were driven by lack of experience with the game, as he delved further into the game he now realizes that a cover system would be totally irrelevant to this title.
TB judged the game before he should have which is inexcusable, apologies.

Nah, you misunderstood what I was saying, what I was trying to say was that I use the third person descriptive as the online person 'twobells' is distinct from the real me.
It is actually a private joke on virtual identities.
