Looks like future patches might be a problem, as Skidrow cracked the serial recognition instead of getting a working key (like groups do with most Matrix releases).

Now they'll have to individually crack every patch, probably.

I heard that while it doesn't have MP it has hotseat, can anyone confirm? I wouldn't mind playing this with my brother on one computer.

No virus warning but I have followed the instructions exactly and when trying to start the game I get an error saying that something is wrong with the serial key. The instructions just say to put anything or nothing though and it should work so I dunno what is going on. Uninstalling and reinstalling now

It's been mentioned at least three times so far, and the thread's only four pages. Come on.

MP is hotseat only at this point, yes.

EDIT: Awesome. Installation went fine, but the patch just won't work. Double-clicking on Installpatch.exe doesn't do anything. Evil or Very Mad

EDIT2: I copied the crack over despite the patch's fubar. I hope the game isn't supposed to look like this...

 Spoiler:

The menu "animations" were also rather sluggish, and so is the galaxy map scrolling. Looks like some issues related to the patched crack + unpatched games, if the .exe was patched at all.

Well, my install doesn't look anything like that -- same release, though. I couldn't get the InstallPatch.exe to work either, so I just did without. Or, if it did work, I sure didn't notice (was expecting another dialog box asking for the serial again, as per the instructions).

Menu animations and map scrolling are choppy for me, too, and I don't know if that's just this release or if it's like that in the legit version.

Game runs, though. My first impressions are ... well, I need to give it a few hours before I can decide.

In my honost view this game doesn't reach sins of solar or sword of the stars by a longshot. And I don't see any resemblens with the MoO series at all.
When playing this game it just feels like a dumped down x4 to the point where its no fun.

Also, although not that important but in this dage of age I expect to see nice sharp crisp textures with lots of detail like Sin of Solar which for me sets the standard today in x4.
This looks like a value game in terms of gfx. Textures are blured and no attention to any details what so ever.

I don't know. Just can't see the fun in this as it seems too simplistic to me and you can't really do much in this game.

Installed the game, ran the patch successfully and got a confirmation screen upon it finishing.
I'm playing through the tutorial right now - but it's little details like these that cost it points.

No its not a big deal, but it makes the UI designer look kinda amateurish.
Hopefully the gameplay is enough to redeem it.

Sword of the Stars still holds the Most Amateurish UI Evah award, though. It's just Arial on gradients.

To be fair this game is basically a one-man show, not a "real" studio, so it'll probably never reach the same level of polish as, say, Sins. I do wish the price was a little lower to reflect that, but it's not like this game is going to move that many copies anyway.

I have to agree with ShadowB, though: SotS has a crummy UI design.

@Immunity: I don't get that glitch on my copy. I'm running it in regular 1680x1050 and the text is fully displayed and aligned properly. Pretty nasty glitch, though.

I'm still not sure if I enjoy this or not. I basically hate GalCiv 2 and wanted to find something more like MoO2 to replace it, but I'm not sure this is it. I want to like it ...

Well, I've tried it but its just not for me. I never was huge fan of 4x and this one is 4x to the core, its everything you expect from this kind of games just stripped of any depth.

The big thing for the game are real time battles, if you like em enough, turn based part will get you going, if not then this one can't offer anything that isn't made better elsewhere.

I think the real-time combat portions of this game are just poorly done, now that you mention it. I think they would work better if presented / designed more like MoO2. As it is I have to zoom way out to see the battle, but then I can't see the ships. And the formations seem broken to me -- why use anything other than the Line Formation?

Eh, I dunno. Maybe I'm seeing things through rose-colored lenses here, but I think I'm going to play MoO2 again ... and maybe give SotS another shot since I did just buy it from Impulse.

If you don't like GalCiv2, you could try Space Empires IV. Top notch.

There's also Space Empires V, which is passable, but not as good as its predecessor.

I had a little game yesterday and i found it to be decent.
Combat sucks and is definetly about management your empire than the rts battles.
It surely lacks some polish and some option but i find it to be a pretty funny game, also it has the plus to be a little faster to play than most other games of the genre.
Of all the current 4x game is the one most similar to Moo2 though (except combat and ship customization of course Razz).

If you want great space battles and the best overall 4x game i'd still go for SOTS + expansions that is imho now the better game of the genre though very heavily focused on combat.

SINS i own it (+ diplomacy) but it never really shined for me, maybe is too long for a rts and too short for a real strategy game.
I will give it another chance online soon i guess.

GALCIV2 + expansions is still fun for me, though this too never really shined on me.
Also its a singleplayer only game.

I've been meaning to try SE IV but keep forgetting it. Thanks for the reminder, I'll load it up.

The SOTS UI was just right IMO. It has everything needed for effecient gameplay and is not weighted down by useless fluff.

Sure its not the prettiest one, as someone so nicely noted, its basically arial on gradients, but quite frankly, a UI does not need to be shiny to be good.

As for Armada.. that game made me buy and play galciv2, event though i actually hated galciv2 in the past. Still, Armada plays just like galciv2 with the only exception that galciv2 is a bit more interesting and has way more variations to it. So all the while i was playing armada, i was thinking: " I could just as well be playing galciv2, this game offers nothing more than that". So i did it.. went to play galciv instead.

SE4 is great in itself, but there is just no AI to speak of in those games. The AI opponents are a joke. Would someone combine SE4 with a great AI, that game would be the new king of 4x space strategy. Would someone add the space combat from SOTS on top of that and i would probably never touch another game ever.
SE5 was an interesting try, but it fell short a little. SE4 is better.

SOASE i do not consider a true 4X game, although its an interesting game in itself.

and SOTS.. well.. its the purified essence of what makes Master of Orion style games really good: nice and detailed research, ship customization and space combat. Thing is: its way too pure.

The SOTS UI is functional, but its lack of polish detracts from its appeal. Good visual design isn't "Useless fluff", and it needn't "weight down" anything. But perhaps you'd like games to have Windows dialogue boxes and buttons. For instance, Master of Orion II had a great interface, both from the visual and practical standpoint, showing both design and gameplay aren't mutually exclusive.

As for SE4, there are plenty of mods around, and a few improve the AI considerably.

i was close to installing this game but decided it wasn't worth it. i'll pass for now. i'm just not in the mood for space games. i would rather play around with udk than this game. Razz

edit:

i tried this out for 4 minutes. omfg this has got to be the worse looking piece of garbage space game ever that i've tried in some time. Sad

the graphic is non-existent. you're basically looking at a star map clicking on square picture tiles and directing low-res pictures around. Sad

uninstall immediate! Smile
