my biggest gripe of this game is all the zoning Neutral wish they would have used a seamless map.

the actual game world reminds me of EQ2 alot even some of the graphics are strangely similar to what i remember

I'm thankful it isn't. I couldn't play it on my laptop while I'm supposed to be working if it was seamless.

I still have problem installing the SkidRow release (on a Macbook Pro using bootcamp). The autorun installer sometimes generates a lot of xml errors, and when I run setup directly, the setup seems to go fine but it is finished in a few secs, installing only a few docs.

Also tried ripping the whole CD to a folder and installing from there, but that gave me a data error. Anyone got any idea how I can install this (supposedly) great game?

After playing some time (lev. 11 now) I am not exactly freaking out about DA-O.
In my opinion it has the same strong and weak sides as "Mass Effect". Yeah, a great cinematic experience when presenting the strong main storyline with remarkable characters, but very weak and generic sidequests (Fallout3, Risen and even old Oblivion were better), cliche fantasy stuff with the usual suspects (dwarves, elves, humans, demons, dragons and so on), these area-limitations I do not like and boring items.
"The Witcher" did show how "usual" fantasy stuff could be presented in a slightly "different" way, but DA-O is a regression. By the way, the game mechanics remind frequently very much of Neverwinter Nights 2 (well, with exception of the "gifts" feature, maybe).

The long play-time is in my opinion not exactly a result of masterful game-design, but the consequence of an (frequently) insane difficulty grade (on so-called "normal") and endless, but slow progressing dungeon crawling while fighting legions of generic enemies.

Thats only my opinion, but I did like "Risen" (and other open-world RPGs like Fallout3) far more (with the exception of the final boss-fight). In DA-O I never feel being part of a world I explore, but being part of a so-called "interactive movie" with all its limitations. The "progress" is pre-written, the interaction with the "world" extremely limited, the lack of freedom (you cant even attack "neutral" characters like in "Risen") is annoying for me and not even the party-choice is really free since the game mechanics decide whom you have to take with you when you want to beat the hard fights. Their skills and abilities are also pre-determined in a certain way.
Its not a "bad" game, of course, and I will continue playing it, but my motivation is now far weaker than it was when I started. No GOTY stuff for me, for me "Risen" is GOTY (until now)

regards

Personally I can't get myself to finish Fallout 3 or even Oblivion. Got to bored with the repetitive dungeons and scenery.

I'm probably going to start playing Fallout 3 again but from my point of view Bioware does things a lot better. I agree with Risen but it had too many limitations like the last two chapters and the fact that Gothic 3 was a complete better game from a story, dialogue and size perspective.

The degree of polish involved in a Bioware game especially in Dragon Age makes it GOTY material from the start.

also nwn2 was boring as shit (drakensang was better than it, and that's saying something, since it wasn't a terribly good game either). if this is more of the same, then meh @ bioware.

NWN2 was Obsidian, mate, not BioWare Laughing As for it being meh, that depends on your taste; Did you enjoy Baldur's Gate and KoTOR/NWN1? You'll enjoy DAO.

NWN 2 was alright, much better than NWN 1 in the plot department. Mask of the Betrayer was even better, approaching the level of PS:T. The story of DA:O is basically a compilation of LoTR and The song of Ice and Fire but the sheer ammount of content and the level of polish and attention to detail makes it really good.

Side quests in DA are nowhere near as boring as they were in ME. They aren't done on the same 3, overused maps, they don't require you to ride idiotic mako each and every time, and so on. I actually liked them. The little, "board type" ones are very generic, but others are quite good, sometimes even excelent. And game lenght definitely isn't based on difficulty. I've had no really serious problems playing on normal (some fights were tough, but nothing frustrating - the difficulty is just fine, nothing insane about it) and i have 63 hours on clock, on my first playthrough (and couting, since i'm still not done).

As for comparing this to Risen, well, let's just say that in Risen i've had fun with first two chapters and then the game became a chore, and a bit boring one at that. And in DA:O, i'm already 60 hours in the game, and i haven't been bored for a minute. I'm already planning to continue on my rogue, actually, after i finish the game once. For me, it's a much better game.

I believe it's 25.

EDIT: Or actually some people say there is no level cap but you can't get much higher than around 22 due to there being no way to get the exp required.

I'm pretty sure it's 25, as in that youtube video with the XP exploit, he only managed to get that high.

I myself reached 23 and a half by the end, doing as much as I could. Sure it'd be impossible to reach 25 playing legitimately.

This is not a game with infinite respawns, so it must end at some level.
