Thinking about switching to 7 from XP too.
A question: I have Elitegroup RX480-A mobo, they don't have win7 drivers specifically on their webpage...would regular Win2000/XP/Vista ones still work ?

For me Vista drivers do the job

Yep, Vista and 7 are very similar (in the way 2000 and XP were back in the day), so Vista drivers should almost in all cases work great.

I'm using Vista drivers to any hardware I couldn't find Win7 specific drivers for. Works great.

Kept XP? LOL... What's with people and sticking with that old OS now that Win7 is around? Heck I even thought Vista worked perfectly fine..

Usually you would edit the boot config in notepad but since Win7 has same boot loader as Vista (or based on) you're out of luck. You can try to edit it with some tools like VistaBootPro, or EasyBCD if I'm not mistaken...

I just tested the above vista key backup program and it works perfectly. Thing is if you have a OEM version of Vista preinstalled it also need a certificate which doesn't get installed automaticaly. So by just entering a cdkey you won't have your windows fully activated. This program transfers cdkey and the certificate so my transition from 32 bit Home premium vista to 64 bit went without any problems. There is no need to phone Microsoft to get it activated. Hopefully the transition to Win7 also goes as planned when it is released.

It says that for 32- bit version that's the minimum... Try it and let us know!

I'm considering finally switching to Windows 7 (from XP).
What is the difference between 'bios mod users' and 'soft mod users' in the loader?
Also, anyone have experience with application compability?
I rely on: Alt.Binz, Filefillz (know this is supported), Putty, VLC, Winamp, Acronis Disk Director, Adobe CS4 Suite, Avast, Avisynth, Foxit, FFDShow Tryouts, Haali Media Splitter, O&O Defrag, PS3MS, Spybot S&D, and much more.
Can't say I use any outdated old software. Any experience with XP compability mode?

Every single one of those works. Acronis Disk Director was Vista-blocked for months, but they eventually released a version that works. I don't have any experience with PS3MS, so I can't answer for that - but the rest? All tried and tested working by me on Vista *and* Win7.

Just checked the release comments and it works perfect on Windows 7. So I guess I am all set to go. Thanks for the input

Ancient, but still great. But I think it's time to switch now, before application support stops for XP, even though the OS itself is supported until 2014. But I don't regret skipping the worst disaster OS in Windows history, Vista (maybe a rival to ME? ).

Vista got an unnecessarily harsh rap, IMO. I'd been using Vista for nearly 2 years and I absolutely loved it. All the hassle everyone else said they had? Bullshit or PEBKAC.
The biggest complaints were about "memory usage" because the clueless dicks saw 1GB+ usage and instantly thought "ZOMG!! XP only uses 100MB!! Vista must be baaaaaad!" without understanding the principle behind superfetch.

The thing is, the Vista required waay much resources, for that time. Not all had 'raging beasts' under their hoods Plus to use it properly, you would need to disable half of unnecessary services that ran in the background.
Win 7 does all that for you! For ex. you use bluetooth, the service starts, then you stop using it, and the service automatically stops and unloads itself from memory
Win 7 rulz

Anyone who compares Vista to ME has no clue, as simple as that. He has not tried it, he has not given it a chance. He has only listened to other clueless people on the internets speaking clueless talk.

Aside from early driver problems at Vistas launch, I never had any serious performance or compatibility issue with Vista, was and is a solid OS.

Lol, what's with the constant "you haven't tried it" argument against vista haters ?
Yes, I tried it and it sucked for me, now win7 is out and Vista is more useless than win95. Shortest lived OS ever. In a few years ppl will be using vista as a cool alternative to the word "fail"
Anyway, this is a win7 thread, fuck the Vista-talk.

Certain people can't take a joke obviously. I used it in a dual-boot environment for a month before it went into the dustbin. Maybe it improved after SP1, I don't care. Assuming things is a fuck-up, Natan. All opinions on the OS aside, one does not need look any further than the market share, downgrade option, and tacky launch to know what a 'winner' of an OS Vista is. But none of this is news and you know it.
For me it looks like Windows 7 is a long overdue remedy, and I can't wait to give it a run.
