I read a piece suggesting that people haven't engaged with the game as much as Mass effect for example.
From my POV considering that Bioware are saying that it is the first true successor to Baldur's Gate makes it a HUGE deal.
Does anyone else feel like the author that DA:O hasn't got that same 'ummpf factor'?

Actually, as much as I really want the game .... I'm not as super-hyped about it as I was, and still am for the most part, about games like Divinity 2 and Mass Effect 2.
Divinity 2, from the trailers right through to playing the game itself, grabbed me instantly. I've already finished it and I'll finish it again as soon as patch 1.2 is out - or the English version - whichever comes first.
As for Mass Effect 2? I want that more than the next Final Fantasy game, which is saying an awful lot
Oh and one suggestion as to why gamers connected more with ME than they are currently doing with DA-O; We're truly, truly, TRULY sick to the back fucking teeth of elves and wizards and magic. Every RPG and it's grandfather has done that setting to death now. ME was something reasonably fresh and new :-\ That's not to saw DA-O isn't going to kick some serious ass -- because I most certainly believe it will. We're just sick of fantasy RPGs now (oh and before anyone chimes in with "I'm not! Stop generalising!" Fuck off, I don't care )

Its in the name. Its called Dragon Age. Dragon in a title makes people associate it with cliche ridden boorefest like:
http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special:Search&ns0=1&redirs=1&search=dragon+film&limit=500&offset=0
...pick ten.

Mass Effect has more hype because it's pretty much a 3rd person shooter with RPG elements. Dragon Age is old school.

My personal hope for this game, is that it'll be deeper , longer and more complex then ME, which was dissapointingly short and shallow, at least for me.
I could second Sabin on the setting issue though, there certainly is a huge lack of anything other then fantasy in the genre (with some exceptions lately, like ME, ME2 or Alpha Protocol), but then again, a fantasy setting, if inspiring and done well, can still become an oustanding game, or even a masteripiece. As Divinity 2 proves. And going Old School kinda means a fantasy setting.
If they deliver on this "Baldur's Gate successor" promise, meaning a deep blend of engaging story, atmosphere and some actual exploration, i expect GOTY. If not, well, it still should be a good game. Hopefully, for more then 20h of playtime...

Agreed 100%. Hey, this is Bioware afterall -- I believe they'll, quite easily, deliver an absolute masterpiece. If not? No biggie, it will still be a great RPG.

dragon age is probably the game I'm most looking forward to this year.
I'm avoiding videos/previews/etc of it though because I don't want anything spoiled, plus that stuff makes the waiting all the more painful.
The few videos I've seen of it convinced me completely that this will be yet another excellent rpg by bioware.

im looking forward to Dragon Age quite a bit and have been for quite a while. But I am looking forward to Borderlands a wee bit more I think. I really would love for someone to nail the Diablo meets FPS formula that Hellgate tried.

I'm not! Stop generalizing!
But seriously i have to agree with you. I'm not RPGs biggest fan but i do enjoy one once in a while . And yes i'm fucking sick of the medieval fantasy setting with dragons , dwarfs , elves , evil sorcerer and gay fairies as well just as much as i am sick of WW II games. There is always the exception to the rule like The Witcher but those are few and it's because they hav something special (In Witcher case it's the mature theme and raw feeling)
We need more mature and gritty RPGs set in modern time or the future. Mass Effect is a good start. Love the game.
That said i won't die happy until i see a remake or sequel to :
Now THAT'S the kind of badass RPGs i'm talking about. And no that shit that was released on 360 and PC doesn't count. It's dumbed down garbage that doesn't even compare to the greatness of the original.[/img]

I honestly couldn't agree more! On both the "fantasy RPG" and the "Witcher" points. The Witcher was absolutely spectacular, a true gem in a sea of mediocrity, as was/is Divinity 2. They're both fantasy games, but they're done RIGHT.

Agreed again! Which is why I'm especially looking forward to ME2, Xenus 2 (aka; White Gold: War in Paradise), Greed (sci-fi hack'n'slash dungeon crawler, yummy!) and Alpha Protocol. Modern, or future, time RPGs is what the gaming market is lacking right now.

Dude, I freaking LOVE you man! Shadowrun, SNES or Megadrive version, is one of my all-time favourite videogame RPGs - and the PNP/tabletop version IS my favourite, way more so than D&D or Warhammer 40k/Necro.
When I first heard that MS had bought the rights to FASA titles and were making a new Shadowrun game; I was over the moon. Absolutely overjoyed and was eagerly awaiting a new, kick-ass, RPG. Then came the announcement than it was going to be an arena-based multiplayer FPS.
..... that broke my heart I'm just glad that FASA has now reacquired the Shadowrun, MechWarrior and Crimson Skies rights! Hopes are growing again for a *true* Shadowrun RPG.

Dragon Age has elves, dwarves and dragons, but it has a very unique setting. I've never played a RPG where the elves are treated as an inferior race, and I've played almost every RPG since Akalabeth: World of Doom.
This game will be my personal GOTY. I'm very excited with this one and Risen.

Play "The Witcher" then. Racism is a major theme there, with dwarfs , elves and such being treated as dirt by the majority of humans.

It reminds me a moment in the Spakowski's book when Geralt was passing by few hangers, and each one got a badge on chest like : elvish spy, traitor, bastard, despite the one, and there, in book, was written something like : one was without the badge so we can assume that he was hang totally by mistake... That's why i love Sapkowski's writing and fell in love in game.
