I'm thinking the same. Legal fees of 2 million + development costs.. Seems very expensive for what it is. Is Star Control really such an anticipated series? I doubt it.
If this was LoTR or star wars, sure, but for this? The most generic name ever, but in his mind it's some sort of gold mine? I have a REALLY hard time thinking the lore is anything special either, was years spent on creating the lore? Uh, hardly.. Early 90's, so i bet it took a few days, max. |
What an utterly stupid thing to say. Yeah, why not name the two biggest franchises with the biggest lore as examples .
You clearly never played the game, that's for sure. The game, for its time, was groundbreaking. You had real time events that affected the borders of enemy influence, you had dozens of species, each very original and a very interesting lore and backstory that tied it all together not to mention well written dialogues and AMAZING soundtrack.
No, it's not Star Wars - there's only one Star Wars - but to dismiss it is just ignorant as well. The game has a very big cult following and I count myself among them. If you played it back then, you'd know how amazing it was in combining so many elements in such a great way with very fun melee combat on top of it that is almost a game in itself. No game did anything similar and for it to do this all in such a great way ...
The game was also very organic with virtually no finger pointing. You had a massive galaxy to explore and you mostly had to piece together clues and hints to know where to go next. It was very satisfying to complete the next piece of the puzzle and it really did take several play-through's to get to the end since the game had a time limit of sorts, the result of the game actually moving in real time as you played.
Basically, there's a reason fans of the originals got excited - SC2 is one of the best games of the 90's and while it's slightly obscure being available only for the PC and 3DO at a time when the PC was still growing as a games platform and the 3DO being a commercial failure, you still can't underestimate how many fans the game has accumulated over the years since it went freeware.

I played it for an hour and a half. It's not bad so far - it's a very close copy of the original SC2. They tried to copy parts of the story too (so far). Exploring planets and moons is a fun mini game.
I seriously hope we'll be able to mod the music though. The music is alright but considering how central it was in SC2 to set the mood, it's severely missed here.

Flew to the moon, completed a combat mission, got an "advanced nuke" as a reward, being told I've gotta re-visit Earth if I want to equip it. I fly back to Earth, then immediately get scolded for not visiting Triton like I was sent out to do. Where's the "I haven't gotten there yet you stupid fucking whore!" option in the dialogue box? For being free roam, the game sure limits you in what you're allowed to do.
That, along with flying mechanics that handle like a drunk Russian bear on ice skates in a rink coated in KY Jelly. We had fly-by-wire systems on planes in the 1960s. Don't tell me that ships wouldn't have similar systems to counter inertia.
Bleh.
I can never be free, because the shackles I wear can't be touched or be seen.

I know they are but this new music lacks the oomph of the original by a long shot. It feels a lot more subdued, mellow, unobtrusive. I remember the first time I heard the Ur Quan theme, it blew me away. The bombastic MOD music immediately set the scene for a clearly menacing alien race. The graphics were grittier too when they needed to be.
Heck, the music playing while exploring solar systems was hauntingly beautiful - it was interspersed with these samples that made it all feel magical. The music now is like a weak flacid copy with none of the soul.

Erm ... Another person who never played the original SC2? The flying mechanics are on purpose - you need to upgrade your ship to improve speed and rotation speeds. And, you CAN upgrade your ship even if you didn't go to Triton yet. I know because I did that. You just got to click through the options. Also, I haven't played for very long, but they probably want a little hand holding before sending you off into a sudden death if you didn't at least get some basic solid equipment.

Some people here complain first before they learn to play.

Well I was a bit of a dick to him - if you don't know SC2, then it may seem as if you're stuck with a sluggish ship. It was the first module I installed in SC2 because it made exploring easier and made you burn less fuel.
I do feel the game will probably be quite fun. They ironed out some of SC2's annoyances (for one, the time limit which, while adding a pretty special touch to the game, did strangle exploration).

Good for them if the game is doing well.. I thought everything i've seen in videos has been looking super mediocre including the graphics which the developers can't seem to shut up about(!?) It has the aesthetics of a Nintendo game, but more generic. Whatever, i have zero interest in this. They've said they'll start working on GalCiv3 again now, which is very good, remains to be seen though.

I can't get into it.
I am sure they faithfully recreated everything that was appealing in the original game(s).
Never played those.
But... i require more complex gameplay. Those planet landing are just... tedius. Nothing fun about them for me.
Stellar Tactics released a pretty sizeable update today and spent 10 hours in that. Thats a game that sinks its claws in me and its not even in alpha yet.

Downloaded it but haven't tried it yet because another little gem caught my eye...

Granted it's still in EA but this has potential...I really liked how there are so many customization options and it makes you want to invest time in it to enjoy even more...

At first it was fun, later it gets repetitive and to grindy.

I’ve watched a couple review videos where they’re landing in all these planets to collect things like silicon. We will put in an update that informs the Captain that just because you can do something, doesn’t mean you should. Especially if it’s not fun to do. |

Well, let me be the devil's advocate here:
I know how SC2 worked and basically, you needed a lot of credits to upgrade your ship and to buy fuel. SC2 basically involved going from star system to star system, following up clues, scanning planets for specials, going down to loot the highest value minerals.
SC:O kind of gives the wrong impression. It makes the player believe you need to loot planets. You get quite a ton of upgrades early on that easily requires 50.000 credits which means a LOT of lander missions. In SC2, it took WAY longer to get these modules and IIRC the pricing was better balanced so you never felt you had to really collect and collect to survive.
It shouldn't be too hard to rebalance things a little - I think they added the modules early on because people are impatient these days but they could use missions that award them these modules instead and make these obvious to find.
And also: reviews have been going down on average. It hangs around 7/10 now which matches the average score of "professionals".
One further thing I find that is very true, though: the combat feels far less inventive. All ships I've had so far, had pretty standard "shoot lasers from the front". It does mean that these ships are more balanced compared to SCII where it was a rock-paper-scissors thing half the time (some ships were brilliant against a few certain ships but crap against most others) but just making them more easily matched also takes away what made SCII melee so great.
