Currently have 4x2 DDR3 RAM and with more games demanding more ram was thinking of upgrading to 16 so what should I get 2 separate sticks of 8GB or just another 8Gb alongside my 4x2 I read about dual channel but people say its hardly any difference
Not only that, but check what ram speeds you can get that are compatible with your mobo/cpu and get the highest speed in mhz with the lowest cas latency you can afford.
Main PC : I7 12700, MSI Ventus RTX 4090 24gb, Alienware AW3423DW QD-OLED
Laptop : I5 4200H @ 3400mhz boost, GTX 850m 2gb Vram DDR3, 4gb RAM DDR3
Derpsole : Playstation 5 disc edition, Ninty Switcherino
TV+audio: LG CX 65" / Sonos ARC + SL ones + Sonos sub 3
VR Headset: Meta quest 2 airlinked
i went from 2x4 1600 to 2x8 2400 and the difference is substantial in every CPU limited scenario in games. it should tide you over till the next upgrade cycle.
don't go for 4 sticks. less performance and stability in many cases.
Any downside of getting 1 x 8GB RAM ? Also can i get a higher frequency ram of 2133 and use the existing RAM which is running at 1800 ?
You can't mix speeds, all run on same (lower) frequenzy (or crash on higher).
At least it used to work with 2x + 1x double size memory sticks. But best is just get a new 2x set of faster memory (sell/giveaway/trash the old sticks).
I run 4 stick with no trouble, but bought the other 2, as I happened to find indentical sticks used for good price (for the time). Now I'd get 16GB cheaper than the extra 8gb cost me
it cost me 30 bucks after sale of 2x4gb 1600mhz to get 2x8 2400mhz, so it should be quite cheap to avoid all the hassles of mixing different speeds, brands, capacities.
I currently have 1x8 GB Kingston HyperX Blu 1600mhz
First its running at 1333mhz. I can clock it via bios a lot, but i have never touched ram so im afraid i can screw something. Don't really wan't to push it that high though. I guess i want to go to at least 1600. Think my mobo supports some kind of autoclocking as i can change one value and it gets to 1600. So should i just change it to 1600 and don't touch anything else or i can do better?
And second i plan to take another 8GB its currently on sale here, but its HyperX Fury ( its blue again, but not exactly the same) Although specs are same 1600mhz CL10. Guess won't be a problem.
Don't plan to switch to ddr4 soon coz i don't want to change mobo again.

Not to make a stand here, but recently upgraded from 1x2GB + 1x4GB DDR3 1333 to this with 2x4GB 1866 making it 14GB 1333 (faster downgrades automatically) and I'm having a safe & fast experience. No compatibility problems or errors.
You can use those profiles and they are guaranteed to work
XMP = extreme memory profile? I have that and when i use it does go to 1600mhz setting.
I also have overclock profiles. but they are quite extreme and for GSKILL or corsair setups.
(AIDA64 actually gives info about this profile).

Guess this should be the safest "clock" for now.

I know that, but i can't afford to take x2 right now and it doesn't even make sense in current situation.
Like i said i don't plan to go ddr4 anytime soon, because i plan to slowly upgrade on current mobo and only after cpu and gpu upgrade to change mobo with ddr4 ram.

that doesn't make sense, since when you upgrade mobo you will probably have to upgrade cpu as well, so might as well upgrade ram with it also
if you want to buy 1 stick of ram, check if it's CAS latency matches your current ones at the same speed, same manufacturer helps too
useful tool is CPU-Z
also in it you will see speed profiles for your current stick, check how much your mobo supports and put it at max ram+mobo approved speed
XMP is a separate RAM profile, most modern bios's have settings to enable it and it auto clocks at max
best scenario is selling your current stick, checking the max speed your mobo supports and buy 2x8 DDR3 kit with that speed, but that's if you have spare money
If i wait to sell mine can miss the promotion and i can't get x2 now and wait to eventually sell mine later. Can use extreme profile to get them to 1600mhz and timings for both are same from what i can see.
Weird, Just used xmp and it sets at 9-10-10 and not 10-10-10 at 800mhz freq. I can manually set it to 10 though.

to be the same at the speed you're gonna run at for both sticks
so the 2-nd stick needs to have XMP profile for CL9-10-10 also check if voltage is the same - as you can see from my screenshot my XMP profile buffs voltage to 1.65V
run CPU-Z and check the stick profiles it reads
or just find a second of the same RAM stick you have currently, even 2-nd hand RAM generally either works or not
also in the mobo manual it is said on which ram slots you need to place the 2 sticks so they run at dual channel
sometimes it even specifically says on which 2 slots you neet to place the ram if you're using only 2 sticks instead of 4
if there are 4 slots it's usually 1-3 and 2-4, usually pair sockets are in the same color too
Well he thing is i can't find same stick here anymore. Its all HyperX Fury thing. (new or used, found couple of 2 to 4 gb versions of mine model exactly)
And also CPUZ gives that current stick xmp should be at 10-10-10 and yet it runs at 9-10-10
If 9-10-10 is better won't it just "nerf" the new one to go 9-10-10 as well?
Edit: I can actually manually adjust all timings for any slot on the channel A or B so i can manually make new one 9-10-10 or old one 10-10-10 so they go same.

It does have return policy, but will wait to see if there is lower price solution durning black friday. When i take will force both to run at 1600mhz with 9-10-10 and run 2h memtest tool.
Thanks for the help!

This is a good thread topic... I was thinking about the same.
Since I got new gpu which is gtx 1060, my performance skyrocketed but I am still using old 2500k (at 4.5 oc though) and most importantly(because can be rather cheaply replaced) 2x4gb of ddr3 1333mhz memory.
Now I just changed the 1333mhz option to 1600mhz on my asrock mobo and thats it... it works and shows as 1600mhz in windows. Is that advisable to oc ram like that?... If that is even oc.
My mobo is super poor when it comes to memory options. I can just choose between few clock options and timings.
