I'm not even sure how they'll be competitive in the mid-range market given how cheap you can find last-gen nvidia stuff for now.
That bad? I just looked at the price of the 980. The cheapest ones were going for 250$.
I then looked at recent benchmarks (done for the 1070 and 1080) which also contained the 390x and the 980.
On average, the 390x had 97.6% the performance of the 980.
So, people have the opportunity to pay 50$ more for a card someone else used, so they can get that sweet sweet 1 extra fps in DX11 games.
If a friend had a budget of 200-250$ for a GPU, would you tell them to buy the second-hand 980?
For those curious/who don't believe my results, it was an average of 10 games: Witcher 3, Far Cry Primal, Battlefront, Fallout 4, Tomb Raider Dx11 mode, F1 2015, GTA5, Just Cause 3, Rainbow Six Sege, The Division.
Results:
390 980
That's pricing now. In a month it'll be even cheaper. The difference is you can pay more now, or wait a month and get either card. You completely missed the point. Yes, if a friend had a $250 budget and they couldn't wait i'd tell them to buy a used 980. That or save $50 and get a used 970 for even less. Note how I didn't say 980 specifically given how dirt cheap 970's are going for now. 390x's are in the same boat sitting around $260.
Also Mchart, are you really suggesting that last-gen Nvidia cards might be a good alternative? You do realise that Kepler hasn't exactly aged well right?
Last gen is now maxwell. (Pascal is out) Why in god's name would I recommend kepler.
Good luck with your 480 has nearly 6 tflops theory. If it was meeting 390x performance they would have said it. Instead they did the tried and true method for bullshiting w/ powerpoint bullets by giving a 'greater then x' statement.

We now know the core clock and the 3dmark benchmark shows the 480 beating the 980. And we now know that the 8gb is 230$.
Yet you're saying that for 250$, you would still recommend that a friend buys a weaker, second-hand 4gb 980? Or save 30$ and get the even weaker 970.
What even is this.
This should be interesting. Ill prolly buy the 1070 then if the 480 proves to be 90% of its perf.at half the price ill return it and get the latter instead. Kinda sad about my 970 resale value going to shit but whatevs.
Though a bit suspicious about the NDA. If they got such a great card on their hands why not send it to reviewers and wreck 1070s sales?
Either their marketing dept is retarded or there's more to the story than meets the eye.

Supposedly they seeded the cards to reviewers during that Macau event, they just can't publish reviews until it hits shelves on the 29th...This way they just freeze the market. Those wanting to go for 1070 are encouraged to wait for benchmarks of 1070, and honestly I'd be pissed if it was for nothing. We shall see. (I think it's pretty clear that it won't match 1070 performance of course, but if it's just behind at much better price, it'd be still worth it over 1070).
so sexy. I don't think i'll ever be buying another brand anymore until MSI flops. Best cooler and OC potential i've had from a GPU ever with this 970. I can already see a 2200mhz 1070 with a custom bios to disable derp clock dropping in my rig.
Especially on something as sys-rapey as TW3, this is damned impressive. Though.. heh.. a pair of 1080s is going to set the average person back $1200++
2x1070 might do the trick
I thought they might so I looked at the video. Sadly, once the player reached Toussaint, his FPS went down to 60. Before that, it was possible. (It was hanging around 75 to 80)
A comprehensive benchmark said that the 1070 was, *on average*, 88% of the 1080. In Witcher 3 it was slightly lower than this, having 75% of its performance at 1440p.
If 2x1080 reaches 60fps, we can expect the 1070s to reach 45.
If the player was willing to reduce some of the effects (disabling hairworks, disable the Post-Process AA which the author of the video said he enabled later in the video AND had a performance hit), we might be able to bump this up a bit. But I'd be surprised if it got high enough to get to 60. Reducing Shadows and View Distance should allow 60fps, I think, but might not be a good idea in Toussaint (due to the visual design of the place).
Still, it would offer great 4K performance even if it doesn't get 60fps.
those 1080s were also overclocked to over 2000mhz, and there were parts where fps was just little over 60fps, in other words impossible task for 1070s to get 60fps (unless you can OC them to 2200-2300mhz levels both stable).
In one of the online stores in Polandball I see that custom EVGA 1080 cards are 500 pln (standard card) and 300 pln (supercharged) cheaper than the crappy FE. That's 113/68 euros respectively. Nice. Hoepfully we can see similar drops on 1070s. This would take the price below 2000 pln
In Game Settings for both configs: Crazy Settings | 1080P | 8x MSAA | VSYNC OFF
Ashes Game Version: v1.12.19928
Benchmark results:
2x Radeon RX 480 - 62.5 fps | Single Batch GPU Util: 51% | Med Batch GPU Util: 71.9 | Heavy Batch GPU Util: 92.3% GTX 1080 – 58.7 fps | Single Batch GPU Util: 98.7%| Med Batch GPU Util: 97.9% | Heavy Batch GPU Util: 98.7%
The elephant in the room:
Ashes uses procedural generation based on a randomized seed at launch. The benchmark does look slightly different every time it is run. But that, many have noted, does not fully explain the quality difference people noticed.
At present the GTX 1080 is incorrectly executing the terrain shaders responsible for populating the environment with the appropriate amount of snow. The GTX 1080 is doing less work to render AOTS than it otherwise would if the shader were being run properly. Snow is somewhat flat and boring in color compared to shiny rocks, which gives the illusion that less is being rendered, but this is an incorrect interpretation of how the terrain shaders are functioning in this title.
The content being rendered by the RX 480--the one with greater snow coverage in the side-by-side (the left in these images)--is the correct execution of the terrain shaders.
So, even with fudgy image quality on the GTX 1080 that could improve their performance a few percent, dual RX 480 still came out ahead.
As a parting note, I will mention we ran this test 10x prior to going on-stage to confirm the performance delta was accurate. Moving up to 1440p at the same settings maintains the same performance delta within +/-1%.

Thanks for the post, may I ask one question though? When it's claimed that there is only 51% GPU utilization does that mean 51% of each GPU is being utilized or that the performance scaling is equivalent to 151% of a single card?

Too bad I won't be able to afford it right away.
their TriFrozer cooler is the best air cooler available as far as I know - but they only use it on their *80Ti Lightning so far
That "gaming" cooler is crap, atleast on 980ti, can pretty easily reach 80s with stock voltage overclocks, some extra heatpipes would not hurt.
For now no matter what Pascal is locked to 1,25V at the maximum. Sure different coolers are weaker than others but for now we can forget about hardcore overclocking unless someone finds a soft mod.
