I was a fan of the UFO Enemy Unknown game and this looks very much like it, but I can't enjoy it anymore. This kind of gameplay worked in 1993, now it's just boring. Soldiers that are 10 meters away from an alien and only have a 50% chance to hit with a rifle (and probably miss), that's just ridiculous.

Lol
It gets more ridiculous when the soldier is critically injured and the alien stands right in front of him and you try to shoot it with autofire...
Boy was I surprised when one of my men was critically injured, 3 other guys standing next to him and the alien running towards them and stopped just in front on the injured guy. Then my turn started and I tried to autoshoot it and the injured f*ker didnt hit anything but my other men killing them aswell...
I was like...DAAAAH!!!
But it'd kinda fun playing UFO:ET...definately a time killer.

Yeah, i tought i was going to like it too, i thought "eh, finally a reedition of the original gameplay with better graphics", but i ran out of pacience in about one night...
Besides, what pissed me off the most was the constant flow of UFO's, i didn't remember it was that annoying.
BTW, i wasn't able to research Plasma Weapons, is there any secret to it? I kept on going but that research was always "greyed"

Capture aliens to extract information from them and open new research areas (especially commanders, and engineers) by stunnig them (stun grenades, stun rockets etc) but first build an alien containment room
I'm trying too to like this game but i'm failing ... i remembered ufo like a myth of my years when i was young ... and now that there is a similar game ... i just find it tooo unpolished and the pace so damn slooow, i'm unable to do more than 2-3 combats per day before i get too bored to go on !
I thought it was impossible that it could happen, but until now i quite prefer Ufo Afterlight to this one.
Could someone that played this game a bit tell me if things get better with the passing of time ? Combats get better or they remain for all the game that boring ? There is really such a continuous flow of ufo ? Does injured soldiers take for all the course of the game take so many days to recover from injuries ?

Well first thing is patch it, then install Bmans easy install mod (Latest version 2.10), and your laughing the game transforms from the vanilla (not all that good) to a brilliant little x-com like game experience. I have played this game though 3 times and still go back for more. Bman has added a options page that lets you alter many features thus making different game play each time.
Installing the mod couldn't be easier, just replace the system.xbg found in your game/data directory with the modded one and away you go.

Thanks for the advise crosswire, i already patched it however, the only thing i miss is using some mod ... this evening i will surely try the one you mention ! Thanks again.

@ crosswire: thanks friend, i just installed bmans easy install and effectively it gives the game a nice sensation of global improvement.
However i still miss some features, like a minimap (yes i know that ufo didn't have it if i correctly remember, however wtf a minimap is always a minimap ! very useful for me !) on the battlefield, and it really has a rather poor game engine.
In any case it's worth trying playing it now.
Thanks again.

There is a mini map mod already that hopefully Bman will take, refine then add to his mod but at the moment I just use the +/- keys to zoom out when I need to get my bearings. i find the Bmans alien AI adjustments brilliant as with every level of adjustment the aliens actions are quite different, with this and adding death for your troops and you have a murderous iron man type game. I'm part way into my 4th game with the levels set on hard, I have to admit I do cheat allot and reload my saves often.
thanks again for all the info, using mods it's a rather nice game, however i am simply surprised that so much modding is needed to make a commercial game nice ...
and, in my personal opinion, but i don't think i'm alone, the original ufo 1 & 2 probably are still better, even nowadays ...

Very true, but modded it still makes for some decent game play. We all still wait for a true up-to-date X-com game, one day hu!

Yes, i think you are right, i have seen many tries but none succeeded in giving me the "old magic" of an X-COM game ...
Maybe however is that i have played in my near 20 years gaming career so many games, and some so good, that it's difficult to being pleased and have some real fun with games that are not able to improve at least a bit the experience of the game(s) from which they took inspiration !
Playing an ufo-like game i at least expect to have a nicer looking aspect, a deeper (if possible) gameplay, and a smoother one too (gui, etc).
Did you see a title that succeed in that ? I think not.

Nope. They just postponed the release date to Q4 2013.
