Zoe Quinn and her ilk’s message is as clear as it is pathetic: Game developers like myself better blacklist people they deem unacceptable or they’ll face the wrath of their mob and sympathetic game journalists.
Here’s the problem, Zoe. You misunderstand how the game industry actually functions outside your hugbox: Everyone deserves an opportunity to work in this industry. Their talent, hard work, and merit determine how successful they are. Not their politics. Not who they are friends with. Not whether they’re a man or a woman. Not what color they are. Talent. Hard work. Merit.
That's a feminist manifesto of the 21st century alright.
Simone de Beauvoir wrote:
It is vain to apportion praise and blame. The truth is that if the vicious circle is so hard to break, it is because the two sexes are each the victim at once of the other and of itself. Between two adversaries confronting each other in their pure liberty, an agreement could be easily reached: the more so as the war profits neither. But the complexity of the whole affair derives from the fact that each camp is giving aid and comfort to the enemy; woman is pursuing a dream of submission, man a dream of identification. Want of authenticity does not pay: each blames the other for the unhappiness he or she has incurred in yielding to the temptations of the easy way; what man and woman loathe in each other is the shattering frustration of each one's own bad faith and baseness.
And that's a feminist manifesto (yeah, not really a manifesto, but you get what I mean) of the 20th century.
"Enlightenment is man's emergence from his self-imposed nonage. Nonage is the inability to use one's own understanding without another's guidance. This nonage is self-imposed if its cause lies not in lack of understanding but in indecision and lack of courage to use one's own mind without another's guidance. Dare to know! (Sapere aude.) "Have the courage to use your own understanding," is therefore the motto of the enlightenment."
I'm not sure where they're going with this. Are they working to change males at a genetic level? I'm not sure what this constant bickering about timeless issues is going to achieve. Some things can be worked out, but others.. Not so much, and also far from exclusive to gaming.
Well, they do say that if you're going to San Francisco you're gonna meet some gentle people with flowers in their hair.
Must be the only city in the world where everyone has a vagina.
I really enjoy being a woman in our culture because I am aware that there are no actual barriers for me, except maybe my physical capacities.
I am glad that your fiancee feels this way and while there are a lot of bad self-proclaimed "feminist" cunts, there are also plenty of misogynist pricks, who will try to hamper the career advancements of your fiancee, just because she is a woman. Whenever my sis-in-law tells asking people, that she is studying informatics, most men act surprised. A woman studying informatics? YES, that is angering when you see in their eyes "But you are a woman?!".
And some assholes actually say, why don't you study something more fitting, for example sociology without even knowing her the slightest...

I studied informatics (computer science) and in a class of 50 guys we had 4 girls. I sometimes talked to two of these girls and the topic came up a few times as well and they said that it's mainly the older generation that is so traditional and that the younger people don't have any such preconceptions. They both graduated and got jobs quite quickly compared to my other (male) friends so I think it's really not that black & white and depends on who you deal with.
In Flanders, people are generally very progressive and only the "old generation" (read: baby boomers) still have such sexist views.
My sis-in-law faces this stuff with young people that she works with (in their 20s) so that is really strange from my pov aswell. I mean I also studied informatics and we had maybe 4-5girls in 250 but times have changed fast. She says that close to a quarter of the people that are in the first semestar are female.
Out of her small group of 4 girls, she and another girl do all the work, while the other two just copy the results and don't understand shit.
Same was for me though with my friends during studies. I'd make the homework and some would just copy because they didn't grasp it at all...
It all depends why men act surprised, I don't think it's that odd to act surprised when a woman says she studies something that isn't that common among women. Informatics is a broad term tho...
When I worked as a PC technician 12 years ago, we were 3 guys and 8 woman. Some customers were surprised by that (women and men) because that part of IT jobs is usually not that much represented by women. Especially not 12 years ago. The huge majority was surprised just because it was odd, nothing more to it.
It's good when you can work in that kind of environment, where people are just valued for their performance instead of anything else.
So yeah experiences can differ vastly by things like location and such.
having played MMO's for a long time myself, i have seen ALOT of what she just said. And it's quite fucking pathetic.
The last MMO I played, ESO, I played (and roleplayed - it was a RP guild) a female elf and I was amazed by how much free stuff I got. In fact, when trading, I always got a much better deal than on my male wizard. I was often even GIVEN crafting mats and when I was losing a battle, someone would often swoop in and help me out.
