Zenimax seems to be a pretty strict publisher though I guess you have to be pretty aggressive in today's gaming market, unfortunate for the actual developers and such getting caught up in this.
(Though perhaps it's for the best, Carmack is likely happier with Rift than he was at Zenimax for example though with all the NDA's and all that I doubt we'll ever know the full details on what's going on.)

I think its impossible to be for or against Zenimax without having all the facts. But that's probably just me Smile

Sadly I do agree, we don't have all the facts yet and I strongly doubt a company as gigantic as ZeniMax would risk a massive slap in the face in court unless they had an ace or at least reasonable belief in the chance of winning. I think they're greedy monopolistic cunts and I don't trust anything they do or say.. but that's just a kneejerk personal reaction and opinion.

Well, we know zenimax has history of being dicks
Here's what Oculus said about the whole deal
Quote:
* There is not a line of ZeniMax code or any of its technology in any Oculus products.
* John Carmack did not take any intellectual property from ZeniMax.
* ZeniMax has misstated the purposes and language of the ZeniMax non-disclosure agreement that Palmer Luckey signed.
* A key reason that John permanently left ZeniMax in August of 2013 was that ZeniMax prevented John from working on VR, and stopped investing in VR games across the company.
* ZeniMax canceled VR support for Doom 3 BFG when Oculus refused ZeniMax’s demands for a non-dilutable equity stake in Oculus.
* ZeniMax did not pursue claims against Oculus for IP or technology, ZeniMax has never contributed any IP or technology to Oculus, and only after the Facebook deal was announced has ZeniMax now made these claims through its lawyers.
* Despite the fact that the full source code for the Oculus SDK is available online (developer.oculusvr.com), ZeniMax has never identified any ‘stolen’ code or technology.

Carmack also tweeted
Quote:
No work I have ever done has been patented. Zenimax owns the code that I wrote, but they don't own VR.

Oculus uses zero lines of code that I wrote while under contract to Zenimax.

Also, there's this (anonymous) description of the terrible corporate culture going on at ID under Zenimax.
edit: also this http://www.dsogaming.com/news/id-software-employee-weve-been-losing-top-notch-talent-ever-since-the-zenimax-purchase/
Technical exodus doesn't seem that far fetched.
Looking at Oculus roster, looks like they just about have the full original doom/quake era ID team back together.

SVVR conference was earlier this week.
DocOK posted his impressions on some of the stuff on display.
I trust his impressions way more than most random bloggers.
He's been doing VR research for a decade and did that kinect augmented virtuality thingie that's been posted everywhere for the past week.
further discussion on his blog post on reddit.

There were lots of interesting talks and an utterly shitty livestream which was unwatchable.
There's promise of good quality videos coming later.

We need a game like Stunt Car Racer with rift support, and a kart racer like mariokart or sonic in first person perspective, and also a proper sequel to Waverace 64 (which is still play since nothing similar comes even close).

Then we can die as happy men.

Drooling Drooling Drooling

I actually got to try the pre-dk2 hd prototype and the resolution was already a huge improvement.
Screendoor was a huge immersion-breaker for me in DK1 but it did not bother me at all in the hd prototype.
I expect it will be even better for DK2, and we know consumer version will be even higher res (I would expect 2560x1440)

TRACKMANIA 2 has native Rift support now. I've been playing over the last week and it's been arcade goodness all the way, it's a very good implementation. Perfect headtracking in 1st person view and impressive 3D.

Quick vid for if you are unfamiliar with TM2:

And here's a very cool Shadertoy-viewer for the rift: https://github.com/jimbo00000/RiftRay
Like boxplorer2 but neater.

Looks pretty great.
Great idea hiring some youtube talent to do the video.
I like that they just left random fucking about in the video after the pitch.
I just doubt this will make it for the first generation.
It will be handheld controllers like psmove and sixense stem etc, but I hope we get this for generation 2, with haptics and shit so you feel like you're squeezing those juicy boobs, er, guns and swords and stuff.

yea it's still super wonky on code side, and there's no haptics at all
but wait a few years and this will be the second generation VR and they'll have it working right
