Broadwell, the successor to the current-generation Haswell microarchitecture, is based on a 14nm process node which has been giving Intel a spot of bother. Although since resolved, Broadwell is still hanging back with rumours claiming overstock of Haswell parts is staying Intel's hand.
The delays that have beset Broadwell may have a knock-on effect for its successor, Skylake. Detailed in a slide leaked in July last year, Skylake follows the process shrink of Broadwell with an updated microarchitecture at the same 14nm process node. Skylake will, the slide claimed, support PCI Express 4.0, Advanced Vector Extensions (AVX) 3.2 and DDR4 memory. Officially, Skylake has no formal launch date but those following Intel's earlier release schedules have expected a release some time in late 2015 to early 2016.
Although Intel refuses to comment on rumours surrounding its launch schedule, the company's chief executive Brian Krzanich has suggested that Skylake will be hitting the market within its originally-rumoured timeframe. 'We had a lot going on,' Krzanich claimed, in response to an analyst's query regarding Intel's use of Taiwan Semiconductor (TSMC) for SoFIA chip production, in his company's most recent earnings call. 'The ramp of Broadwell, the ramp of Skylake in the second half of next year, plus bringing these products inside.'
Krzanich also confirmed plans to transition its mobile parts, including the outsourced SoFIA heavily-integrated chip, to internal production on a 14nm process. These moves, Intel has claimed, will boost demand for its parts - but profitability for its loss-making Mobile and Communications Group is a long way distant. 'I'd say for 2015, I would expect to see reduction in the loss [of the group],' chief financial officer Stacy Smith added. 'Not profitability, but a reduction in the loss will feel pretty good when we get there and then we'll keep driving towards the long-term profitability goal.'
Sadly, Intel did not confirm any further details regarding Skylake - but if production ramp is planned for the second half of 2015, retail availability should not be far behind. |
Still a very long way off.

This is the first architecture from Intel that I am excited about. Not sure why, probably will be disappointing again on the desktop, but I am excited.  |

Now these are interesting considering that Skylake will feature GT4e graphics in addition to support for DDR4 memory. Intel Skylake processors will boast a totally new architecture considering they are a Tock when it comes to the Intel Tick-Tock model. The GT4e graphics will feature graphics improvement with more execution units compared to Broadwell which from leaked details is said to mention 48 EUs on GT3e and 24 EUs on GT2 level processors. Broadwell will also be the first processor to introduce GT3e graphics with on-die eDRAM cache on desktop level. Haswell refresh series will also come in different variants such as H/Y/U/S series but will not have many improvements since its based on the same Haswell architecture which launched last year.

The most notable thing is that Intel will actually feature support for DDR3 memory on the Y and U series Skylake chips while the others including desktop processors will support DDR4 memory as confirmed several times before.

We will also get several new Wireless technology on the 100-Series chipset such as Snowfield Peak (WiFi + Blue-tooth) replacing Wilkins Peak, Douglas Peak (WiGig+ WiFi + BT) replacing Stone Peak and Maple Peak and the Pine Peak plus WWAN LTE chips (XMM 726x) replacing the WWAN XMM7160) for wireless connectivity. Intel is also introducing the latest Alpine Ridge thunderbolt controller with Skylake pushing speeds of 40Gb/s, double that of last generation. For LAN, Intel will introduce Jacksonville to replace Clarksville.

I was skeptical at first, and granted I don't have much of a crazy OC now (only 4.3 vs the stock 3.0) it's worth it.
That said, I will hang on to my ivy bridge as long as I can *hugs 3770K*

It has been known for ages that Haswell, at least the mainstream variant, will use a different socket and chipset.
Also, what is the news here? It was planned for H2 2015, someone said "Intel will not delay launch, it will launch in H2 2015", and then this article claims that person was wrong and it will ship in H2 2015.

Rumor: Intel might cancel it's 5th Gen CPUs due to it's consumption and temperature, leaving Haswell as the priority for the 1150 Socket.

So with AMD cpus being garbage and dx12 coming our way soon ... what's the point in 5-10% performance bumps again? I mean why does intel even bother nowadays...

I don't think they even consider AMD as a competitor anymore. Intel is rather competing with ARM for mobile market domination. Their efforts are focused on low power consumption and GPUs that can drive high DPI screens.
