The most beneficial ones for me were lowering the switch distance setting to 200, and using the DDSopt program. However if you use DDSopt don't let it change any textures from the fx or pfx folders, otherwise smoke and gunfire will look messed up. |
That sounds interesting, thanks Randir. I've never used DDSopt before, but I guess I'll be able to configure everything after some fuddling.

All you need to do is select the mod's texture folder (gamedata\textures) in the top part of DDSopt, and select an output folder in the bottom half. Then when it's done converting, go to the output folder and copy the files over to the original folder and overwrite.

It was easy. That combined with a lower a-life switch distance (200 instead of 350) made things considerably better, but some of the additional stuttering unfortunately is still present.
I guess there's basically nothing we can do at this point, the engine can't stream stuff properly if the texture-related files are too many. At least the official patch made shooting more fun and less annoying since enemies aren't bullet sponges anymore. It's something.

Even with everything on medium detail it's still an absolute stutterfest
Saving, loading, going to new areas, talking to people - it all induces more stutter. It even happens randomly between every 20 to 30 seconds.
I have the AI radius awareness (I forget what they call it) set to 250 which should be well below that's recommended for my PC
The vanilla game is fine, it's just the mod |
Steam version?

Well so far it's very smooth on high settings except when it seems to be loading assets when I move through the world. Very smooth though. I keep getting killed but I'm sort of goofing off. I'll update again in a bit. win7-64/gtx 680, 3770k @ stock, 8GB RAM.

As far as I know the good old Xray engine unfortunately always suffers when it comes to streaming stuff, especially when there are so many custom made contents, as they are loaded on the fly, and not even the fastest SSDs in the world can completely fix the issue.

reinstalled original Stalker and... was the view bobbing always there? The character swings like crazy! Any command line that adjusts that? Dont want any mods I think, I finished the game when it came out as it was and it was great. Don;t remember the view bobbing. (steam version)

wasn't that great of a game anyways IMO. I played it for a week and just never grabbed me like SOC did.

Interactive, just for shits, try disabling your audio card. I haven't had it happen in years, but I remember games being funky due to sound issues, such as 16 vs 24 bit and the hz.

Interinactive wrote: | Bullshit. I've tried this mod with 3 completely different GPUs now (the first being a 580 which came out in the same year as the vanilla game), 3 different SSDs, as well as a powerful laptop, as well as everything I've listed in this thread, yet it's a problem on my end? Yeah, right. It was the same years ago with the other version too. The engine is a pig to begin with, this mod exacerbates it. I've never dedicated so much time to getting something running nicely, and FWIW, vanilla COP isn't anywhere near as bad. |
Sounds like you might have a corrupt config. Had a similar problem myself. Have you tried deleting user.ltx in my documents?
No way that performance you mention is normal. If you are using the dx11 renderer that is meant to have problems as well. Try dx9 (quicker load times and almost the same visuals) or dx10.

The unmodded version runs fine, but some mods like Misery gave me shitty performance.
