Been playing path of exile like a mad man for 3 months now. If you like a deep hack n slash give that a try. Its f2p.
But I agree, most games get really boring really fast which is why I've stopped playing most genres, mainly into mmos/online arpgs.
Though Im looking forward to star citizen and the new torment game.

Yep, kickstarter project already gathered $2.75 million pushing for 3-5 by the time it ends.

Yup.... Same situation here, I have shit tons of games in my steam library, xbox, ps3.... and just recently I've started beating them. You just gotta take your time, most people here beat a new game in a day, it takes me at least a week, no fucking time :/

I can relate to that. And it's not like I don't have the free time, I only work 3 days a week. But somehow I just hop from game to game, never finishing anything even though I do want to..

Yup know the feeling, with each year passing it seems I spent more on going to the older games to finish or revisit them and the newer games get put on hold or even never played.
Forced myself yesterday to play and finish the BF3 campaign. Since I bought it I never touched the SP, and dear god they stripped a whole lot game out of a game.
Just think that most newer ones just lack a lot and that is the reason. But I'm glad once in a while we get some exceptions.

This is a good read to lead you into my strategy below. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Paradox_of_Choice:_Why_More_Is_Less
I think this quote in particular addresses your problem that is in no way exclusive to you.
"Missed Opportunities. Schwartz finds that when people are faced with having to choose one option out of many desirable choices, they will begin to consider hypothetical trade-offs. Their options are evaluated in terms of missed opportunities instead of the opportunity's potential. Schwartz maintains that one of the downsides of making trade-offs is it alters how we feel about the decisions we face; afterwards, it affects the level of satisfaction we experience from our decision."

I had the same problem a few years ago and think my own solution worked quite well. I force myself to finish pretty much all games I start that has a goal and a story line. I probably have a 95 percent completion rate now on garmes. It's only utter crap like Fable 3 I refuse to finish. You might think forcing yourself to finish games sounds almost like a job but it works for the following reasons.
1. I dont get distracted by knowing I could play a better game in my collection. I enjoy the game I am playing NOW and look for positives in it.
2. I get more picky with what games I start. I dont try many new games until it's time to play through them
3. You have to play through some so so games to really enjoy the good ones
4. I dont forget what the hell was going on in a game I left for months and come back to. I finish the story from start to finish.
edit, I want to add one more point I think is relevant.
5. Finishing a game stimulates the reward center (achievements in games are there for a reason). I also feel that my "to play list" is being ticked off one at a time, even though I know its a long one. Feels good.
Sports, social and minigames are Ok to play on the side of course. I enjoy gaming a lot more today than 5 years ago even though I got older.
Try it
I should become a gamer shrink... |

Hmm I didn't read the whole thread and missed your very good post!
I posted Mr. Schwartz' TED talk a week ago or so:

I'm doing basically the exact opposite of Grapper's great advices, it's like I'm having some form of gaming adhd these days. Playing a single game feels too boring to me, that's why I'm keeping 30-40 different games installed at the same time so I can change them like a woman change her shoes. Which is the very definition of being spoiled , but somehow I have more stimuli that way.
I guess it's also because my subconscious doesn't want to finish them too soon, and it's indirectly trying to make them last more. Usually my memory isn't that good, but when it comes to games, I remember every detail/gameplay mechanic so this sort of "episodic" gaming is enjoyable for me. I always manage to finish them..eventually.
Having more free time would help a lot, though.

+1, but only have skyrim, trials evolution, and dota 1 installed. Cant force myself to play anything else, and it's also hard for me to play these 3 games, you put it right, gaming adhd for games hehe, and especially after noob rage quit in trials, if i fall 3 times, it's insta alt+f4 and shutdown pc.

Who said it (it is also someone's sig here) that today's gamers want to be empowered instead of achieving stuff?
