|
 |
Okay, considering I value your opinions on hardware and I know the nfohumpers are adept at filtering down on the good stuff I have following hard question for you guys. I want to track down a good 27" monitor for my pc which has the same vibrant colours the macintosh retina screens offer.
My search started when a colleague of mine came by with a dell xps 15 laptop featuring a 15.6" Full HD 1080p Truelife WLED Display. This laptop screen had this same vibrance and depth of colour, it was just amazing to look at.
So now I am on the hunt for a nice glossy looking 27" screen to replace my 25.5" screen I have now. I found a few comparable screens in the following,
Dell Ultrasharp U2713
SAMSUNG Series 9 S27B970D High Gloss Black/Brushed Aluminum 27"
Dell S2740L
so far these are what I could track down in terms of comparable retina looks, but I would really like to hear other suggestions from you guys, I do not care about reflections of these glossy screens, my room is always dimmed seeing as I am on my attic. So the glossier the better, as long as the colours are deep, true and similar to a retina mac screen and the response time is around 7ms or lower it could be a possible candidate for me.
Thnx in advance

I read the korean screen topic and I do like the looks of the screens but in terms of quality the samsung packs quite a punch, the price however is very steep, and thats the only thing on which I am still stuck.
Maybe I will just wait a bit more, do any of you guys know when the new panels will come out, it might drop the price of the current PLS/IPS panels.

I think Blade means that it comes with built in speakers.

The old U2711, these Korean things and Apple's Cinema displays all use the same panel from LG. Only difference is that the Korean ones are "A-" grade instead of "A", meaning they MAY show pixel defects; LG doesn't guarantee there are none on them, that's why Dell and Apple don't want them.
Between Dell and Apple, anyone going for the Apple ones is a plain retard. No, really, they are. Literally identical panels, difference being that Dell cost half as much and come calibrated properly out of the box. The new 2713 beats its older sibling, so nothing has changed. The Apple looks flashier, but I've found that the Dell feels sturdier. Now, the Korean ones are roughly at Apple's level in terms of image quality. Obviously, they're no match for neither Dell's nor Apple's build quality. As a bonus though, they tend to get to higher refresh rates and obviously they're priced properly.
The Samsung displays are really good, but also overpriced; Samsung are slowly trying to become another Apple, charging lots for aesthetics. My main concern with Samsung however is the inevitable panel lottery. I don't think there's a single of their monitor ranges that has kept the same panel (or same quality panel) throughout its lifespan, so before you even consider one, browse some forums to see what people are reporting. Places like OCC, [H], AT usually get a thread if one of the high profile monitors has a lottery behind it.
Last but not least, don't stare yourself blind ( ) on the glossy part for vibrant colours. You'll find that the good monitors all have several colour presets, one of which will be similar to the oversaturated "retina" displays. My Eizos can match one of those , I highly doubt a Dell for example couldn't.

You aren't entirely correct.
The Apple and Samsung displays (while using different panels) have a glass exterior that is coated with an anti-glare compound. The Dell panel and any number of other IPS panels made by LG either have the typical anti-glare coating or in the case of the cheap korean ones may have no coating at all.
I personally go with HP displays myself (For LG IPS) as they strike a good balance between quality (Build quality of the housing, stand, warranty options, etc..) and price. While they tend to not be as feature filled as the Dell displays they are typically cheaper but just because they are cheaper doesn't mean the actual housing/stand/build quality suffers. They are just missing the additional inputs and OSD options the Dell's tend to have.
