However, Valve's next console game--after the PlayStation 2 Half-Life and the Xbox Counter-Strike--will be distributed by one of VU's main rivals. Today, Electronic Arts revealed that as of this fall, it will be the international publisher of the forthcoming Xbox version of Half-Life 2, which will now ship in October 2005. EA will also assume distribution duties on a new Game of the Year edition of Half-Life 2 for the PC, which will include Half-Life 2 and Counter-Strike: Source, as well as Half-Life 2: Deathmatch and Half-Life: Source, in a single box

What have they been smoking?
Don't think it will affect the game, but partnership with EA...thats a joke imo Confused

ea is not valve's publishers. valve is the publisher, ea is only responsible of boxing and selling the copies in stores.
and btw the contract is only for half life 2 goty edition and consoles ports of half life 2, which means, not even for half life 2 aftermath probably.
valve is gonna found their own publishing and distributing company in the future, they have the money to do it and i don't think they'll miss this opportunity

What does ea has to do with bugs and fixing them? Steam seems to work ok so far and there is no need to make a new title steam-less. Don't know what this agreement really means in terms of distribution but I think they will stick on valve's concept type of games.

P.S: Do you remember that questionare via steam on the early HL2 release asking how would we feel for valve creating an rpg game?(it was rpg they were asking...didn't?)

maybe you can't read very good, so let me point this to you:

Quote:
EA will also assume distribution duties on a new Game of the Year edition of Half-Life 2 for the PC, which will include Half-Life 2 and Counter-Strike: Source, as well as Half-Life 2: Deathmatch and Half-Life: Source, in a single box.

However, Valve will now officially self-publish all its PC products...

It doesn't affect upcoming Valve games. Valve still decides the release dates etc

But still, it's surprising that anyone wants EA involved at all, especially when Valve could manage theirselves as they have untill now.
Just surprising, thats all...

Yeah but they need a distributor. I like steam downloads of games myself but there are still many who want to have the box and cds....

for the pc market the deal is only for the rights to distribute the "half life 2 goty edition" retail box, which includes half life 2, counterstrike source, half life 2 deathmatch and Half life source.
it's gonna retail in autumn so i presume also the lost coast will be included in that edition.
for the pc market there isn't anything else ea can distribute in stores for now... i haven't understood exaclty if a stand alone version of counterstrike source is in the work btw... the press release is not clear on that

Won't HL2 look like ass on the xbox?

I think it's a bad move, especially when the xbox360 comes out a month later.

EA is just the distributor of the retail boxed copies and console ports of the games... valve is still very much in control of the game itself...

the publisher is still technically valve

Don't you guys remember VU Interactive sued valve because they used steam to distribute games instead of leaving all copies to them in box? Valve had lot of trouble with VU and it's normal they want to leave them. EA is a bad choice but it's the most easy choice since they buy everything they can. At least Valve want to be as independant as possible and continue to sell by steam which is a major plus for them. I don't think they will let EA push the release date, you know valve how much do they delay games over and over Wink

ea is not valve's publisher... ea doesn't pay valve to develop a game, ea has only the responsibility of boxing and selling the copies in stores.
valve is publisher of himself, valve pays his own employers with his own money and is not responsible for release dates with ea Laughing
