Quote: | Origin boss: Steam sales 'cheapen intellectual property'
You and I may get very excited about the big sales frequently run by Steam and many other PC digital distributors, but the chap behind Origin at Electronic Arts is not convinced such huge discounts are good. Interviewed at E3, EA's senior VP of global ecommerce David DeMartini opined that offering big discounts on Steam "cheapens your intellectual property."
"Obviously they think it's the right thing to do after a certain amount of time," DeMartini said of Steam to GamesIndustry International. "I just think it cheapens your intellectual property."
"We're trying to give you a fair price point, and occasionally there will be things that are on sale you could look for a discount, just don't look for 75%-off going-out-of-business sales," he explained. That "certainly works for Valve," he thinks, but "I don't know if it works as well for the publishing partners who take on the majority of that haircut."
"If you want to sell a whole bunch of units, that is certainly a way to do that, to sell a whole bunch of stuff at a low price. The gamemakers work incredibly hard to make this intellectual property, and we're not trying to be Target. We're trying to be Nordstrom."
It's a curious comparison to draw, as Steam beats Origin by far on both pricing and client experience. However, plans are supposedly afoot to win customer's hearts and minds in a way other than cutting prices, to "form a longer-term relationship with them and draw them in that way." What exactly this will entail is under wraps for now. Ponies, maybe.
He's not the only one to have criticised Steam for this, mind. In April, GOG commented that huge Steam discounts damage the "long-term value of your brand because people will just wait for the next insane sale."
That said, Steam discounts have certainly been a huge success for some developers who don't mind making less money per sale if the volume increases massively. Darwinia creator Introversion has credited a Steam promotion with saving the studio from closure. |

Someone torch this guy, seriously.
I have heard nothing but positive feedback regarding steam sales - I have bought loads of games only due to the sales, and so have millions of others, I'm sure. Some games are just not worth 60 bucks, but lower that to half or less, and it will sell like hot-cakes.
If anything, Steam sales PROVE, that these intellectual properties are fucking overpriced to begin with (to a point, that it doesn't even make business sense, unless you have a huge marketing machine).
So dear mister David DeMartini, fuck you, and crawl back to your cave at EA - I'm usually a guy, who likes competition on all levels, but I think the digital distribution market is healthy enough without Origin, so kindly fuck off and go bankrupt. Fucking EA...

Especially when considering "publishing partners" have the opt-in option to participate in these sales.

These dollar signs in eyes big wigs would find a reason to complain even if everyone was buying their crappy games on release day at full price. Even if there was such a perfect game market (perfect for companies, not us), they would just come up with some other ridiculous reason why they don't get enough sales. "More people buy bread than they buy our games, food industry and hunger is ruining gaming"
Fuck them.

Wait, Steam selling digital copies, that means they can sell virtually an unlimited number of copies. The EA's idiot seems to fail to understand that. You can sell loads of digital copies at a reasonable price, so the devs/publishers that are using Steam can sell volumes and get a large chunk of money. Instead selling a few overpriced copies, they sell tons at a rather fair price.
Both GOG and Origin are kinda of Steam's competition so spewing non-sense is expected.
And GOG it's as hypocritical as it gets, too. They also have insane discounts. Don't see them pricing the games at 40 euros or higher (excepting Witcher 2 which also has insane discounts from time to time).
So, I'm sorry if i look at this statements and see them as what they really are: underhanded competition.

Lol he can spout nonsense all he wants. I don't believe Origin will ever really surpass steam in terms of sales. I can't imagine customers not buying steam sales because he says he has a "fair price point" and wants a "long-term relationship". (sounds like a subscription for playing all games on there or something?)
Steam is one of the good things left in game publishing on pc...

Why does he get away with it? What an absurd statement, which I cannot understand at all. Just because he uses big words, it supposedly sounds okay. What the fuck did I just read? I doesn't make one bit of sense in any way for me.
Maybe I'm not smart enough, or that guy has lost all contact with reality.

In fact, the real morons are those who buy his shit and give him their money. The customer mass is the real moron. He, I think, is just another economist troll.

Steam sales give us the discount we should have had when the middle men (the high street retailers, the shipping company, the packaging producers and the media replication company) were wiped from the equation. Yes, I know Steam take 30%, but they're also content to take 30% of the sales price, not just of the RRP.

He should have also thrown in something about art. If video games are truly art they should appreciate not be thrown on clearance 6 months later

yeah, but art kind of becomes cultural "property" when it enters our society, so i highly doubt a sales-suit would ever go so far as to call the work of his wage-slave minions art. The only art they know is the art of exploitation m(
