So i'm buying a bike through the cycle to work scheme but haven't got a clue where to start. I'm mainly going to be cycling to work but will use it at weekend for cycle paths and other off road excursions.

Does anyone know which type of bike is best, I think i'm going to go for a Hybrid but with no rear or front suspension.

My sisters boyfriend bought this bike:

It's absolutely great. He traveled through several islands here in Cro this summer, and he drives it around down. It's light, aluminum body...

Was a bit pricey (~850€ iirc), but he said it's the best investment he made so far Smile

I have a brompton which I love, but it's a niche bike, unless you commute on a train I guess you don't want one Smile

Get a mountain bike with lockable suspension (pretty sure this exists) and a set of road tires. Best of both worlds.

I got the following back in 2008:

Which I love and I would consider a great low budget off road bike. My missus got the 2010 version without the disc breaks and its equally good.

I bought a Diamondback Response Sport 2011. Great value for money but I hardly use it. Shimano gears and front and back disk brakes, rockshox front suspension.

How about getting 2 bikes? It's such a pain in the ass to drive a mountain bike in the city compared to a racer.

post prices dammit
i bought mine last year, a little less than 200 euros and it's built like shit tbh, i should take it apart and put it back together, at least it's lightweight and i don't really take care of it as in i don't really give a shit if a go through nails or force the gears, it's a god damn bike, it should take whatever i give it

also depends on your height how thick the frame should be, the taller and heavier you are the thicker it should be

a friend of mine built his own bike, front-rear disc breaks and a proper frame and it did cost him around 700 euros but it's money well spent since would have paid over 1 grand if didn't build it and bought one, basically it's like building your own spec instead of buying pre-built

Well I'm about 6ft 2 and weigh 14 and a half stone.

I think im going to go for a Hybrid maybe with front suspension. The cycle to work scheme means I'll get a discount on the bike and then not pay any VAT on it either.

Maybe this although I know it has no suspension.

It's medieval stuff. While the enlightened world moved to the metric system centuries ago, some countries (UK, US and some others) have problems getting their backwards populations to get used to modern measurement systems. Cool Face

1 stone = 6.35029318 kilograms
1 Pound (lb) = 0.4535 kilograms

Most people in the UK still use Stone and lb when referring to their weight.

Buckled the back wheel, had it for what, a month. They charged me to fix it as well as apparently 'ive been going up curbs' which I havent.

Im starting to get right into cycling though it's quite addictive. Im also compelled to buy loads of cycling related clothes, it's almost like an addiction.
