remember those guys who are inventing a way other than polygons to do things in games , well they are back
have to admit it sounds intriguing and really hope technologies like this get some support , although i think those guys are trying to sell it a little bit too much

TWIN PEAKS is "something of a miracle."
"...like nothing else on television."
"a phenomenon."
"A tangled tale of sex, violence, power, junk food..."
"Like Nothing On Earth"
When he shows the objects can animate (in 3 years time, he has never shown this) I'll take a closer look, till then a bunch of copy-pasted ugly voxel-based models mean nothing to me or anyone else.

His old video:
I think it's extremely impressing. It's not about what it currently looks like, it's about what it demos.
if they have developed tools to convert polygons to point based objects, they will surely be only a few steps away from being able to convert skin weighting and rigs into the point based rigs too.
the fact is as long as the weighting is done with a smooth gradient, it shouldn't be as ugly as we imagine.
also to correct the title, they are NOT game company, something they say many times in the video. just tech. i guess thats the main reason they haven;t tried animation yet, because they dont have anyone with the rigging or animating skills to help them develop it.
so its hard to say how viable the tech is considering they dont even know how to make games themselves. maybe the tech is just way too impractical when they finally release the dev tools (years away i imagine)
also one thing he doesnt mention, is how a normal CPU can do this? (unless i missed it in the first vid)
everyone on nfohump is tech genius, truly wonderkid society, how would you know can they or can they not animate..
as back to top, impressive and epic
What are the chances in 3 years time he hasn't hired a single animator?

Well one of the best games ever imo is Outcast and that one used voxels, very similar to this by the looks of it.
If they can't animate yet they can create a whole map using this technology and use polys for npc's, I would play that RPG, if unlimited is true they can create a map the size America, mmm, I love big maps.
Voxel engine is a real thing. I'd love to see it in a game, if nothing else, just to freshen the scene a big. Unlimited detail, on other hand is a marketing scam. Pre-rendered videos to lure money into their company from dumb investors, nothing else.

Plenty of games have used voxels. Everything from Master of Orion 3 to Outcast to Crysis, etc.
Thing is, no one has exclusively used voxels, and there's a reason for that.
It's not "fake", but they don't mention any of the HUGE drawbacks, while they are not afraid to say pretty soon polygons will be dead.
As I said showing me "a bunch of copy-pasted ugly voxel-based models mean nothing to me or anyone else" and Notch points the exact same thing (it's basically a few voxel-based objects repeated all over the map and everything is static).

Carmack twitted: "Re Euclideon, no chance of a game on current gen systems, but maybe several years from now. Production issues will be challenging."
Carmack has said before that id tech 6 will virtualize geometry just like id tech 5 virtualized textures (Megatexturing) for "nearly infinite amounts of geometric detail in the world", by raytracing voxels.
However research has only just began.

I see, still very limited, and as Notch says "It’s possible to rotate, scale and translate individual chunks of voxel data to do simple animation (imagine one chunk for the upper arm, one for the lower, one for the torso, and so on), but it’s not going to look as nice as polygon based animated characters do." which seems to also be the case here.

But this technology isnt based on voxels. I watched their older videos and they said exactly that voxels are limited because you cant animate them easily. This tech is supossedly a search algorithm that searches for all the pixels of your resolution in a point cloud database and therefore its limited only by your resolution
Well it's strange because on "Unlimited Detail" webpage it's said that it's new rendering algorithm and on "Euclideon" (the same group as it seems) it's said that it's basically voxels.
