I bought NWN2 Platinum for 20 euro after the disappointment i had with DA2... I bought the original NWN2 when it came out but never tried the expansions. I'm loving MotB!
How long does it last?

The whole MotB cast is probably the best Obsidian has ever created. Compared to the girls from BioWare games, Kaelyn is far more depp and interesting.

It says a lot about Obsidian that what is generally agreed to be their strongest work from a narrative standpoint was essentially completely free of publisher interference. How good might some of their other games have been if they had been left in peace to do their job?

Pillars is the worst thing they made and that wasn't affected by publishers.

PoE has plenty of problems, but calling it the worst thing they have made is a stretch.

They had to change the formula, Square Enix wanted a reboot for consoles.

Picking up the franchise and trying to turn it into a RPG series I guess rather than traditional dungeon delver (At least Wizardry retained that part.) and then pulling out because sales fell short, which knowing Square's ambitions and expectations was probably an impossible goal anyway and made more so from reviving a old franchise from the dead.
EDIT: Well Dungeon Siege had RPG elements of course but it focused on dungeon delving and killing with a little bit of plot driving the entire thing (And giant chickens.) and then the sequel built on this a bit more before fading entirely.
(Psycho farmer murders all! There, plot.)
(Well there was a bit more to it than that, some fun boss encounters too and the not-a-beholder beholder creatures with lasers.)
Also did co-op really well as I remember, before it died at least.
(Mods too, encryption hampered things a bit though for some fan modules.)
EDIT: Well going back to MoTB it was a interesting read, Electron was a wonky engine with a lot of flaws but that expansion wasn't bad at all, Zehir was a bit different though and I don't think the modding community grew to the same extent the first game did though the tools were perhaps not as user friendly and the other quirks with the engine itself.
I do like what they did with the story even if there were some restrictions in place from I guess Wizards of the Coast and how the core material was to be handled.

Never went that far with the original game (my only memory is that is was an epic performance hog at max settings), maybe it's time to check it and this expansion?
BTW, is the base NWN2 as boring as NWN1? Struggled really hard to finish that one but was never able to finish it.

NWN2 has its moments, but it is fairly mediocre, at best. I'd argue its OC is better than NWN's OC, but that's not exactly a high bar.
The link between the OC and MotB is pretty tenuous. I think they would have been better off just saying it was a different character. There's only really one brief moment where they try to link it back to the OC, and frankly I thought the game was worse off for it. You are probably better off just skipping the OC and jumping straight into MotB.
SoZ is a very different beast in many respects. They tried a different approach and I personally didn't like it much. It is completely unrelated though, so you can dive into that without any worries if you want to see for yourself.

Huh, maybe I'll just go for the expansion then... fairly sure that I have it somewhere around here

Well originally the ending of NWN2 causes..
Spoiler: |
A cave in, which kills the entire player party though the expansion then ret-conned this so some survived including the player character and that shard but as mentioned it's not touched upon much and the expansion stands on it's own as you explore a new storyline.
|
Zehir is entirely stand-alone as some trade caravan adventure and for the original campaign I don't really remember it too well, tried a few things but it didn't really work out, some quirky party members and in true Obsidian fashion the writing lets you be a total ass to everyone.
Spoiler: |
Including possibly whipping your dick out at a daemon as some form of proof.
|
(I think the rest of the party chips in before anything happens though ha ha.)
Sure some of the Bioware games lets you go pretty far too but not to the extent that Black Isle's games did or Obsidian ha ha.
(Fallout 3 from Bethesda had some memorable conversations, Obsidian tops that in New Vegas though but the game is a technical mess even with the unofficial patch although playable so long as you save often.)

Also MoB is one of very few games where the "evil" playthrough doesn't just make you a massive douchebag that still ends up saving the world.

MotB is one of the most complete RPGs ever made. The reason it's not so highly regarded as PST or BG2 is because the story isn't so "special". However, every element of MotB is good, something I couldn't say about PST for example.

I disagree. Actually MotB is very similar to PST in many aspects. The story, the writing, the characters, the setting, the artstyle are unique. The gameplay mechanics and combat on the other hand are pretty much an afterthought. And this is causing a pretty substantial dissonance due to the scale and grandeur of the narrative.
It's like in the end of PST the Transcendent One pronounces that he CAN FORGE PLANES WITH HIS POWER and will UNMAKE YOU and proceeds to hit you with some spell for 10 damage or helplessly wave his tentacles at you failing to bypass your AC.
