I'm about to go for my third playthrough of this, this time on the PC. Does anyone know if there have been any mods released and have the god-awful controls been fixed yet?

Lots of INI modding and an pre-modded APEngine.ini that significantly improves visuals *and* performance. It's running great now and the controls feel nice and responsive.

It's a game that you have to play for a bit before it starts growing on you, it took me a few hours and a number of missions before it all clicked and I started to really enjoy it
Damn shame it sold so badly, a sequel with a few improvments would have been great |
few improvements like a new fucking game it probably would and yes i played it for hours before i got rid of it and swore never touch this shit with a ten-foot pole
it's just doesn't get better with all this clunky mechanics and lame gameplay, sometimes story is not enough for me if rest of the game is broken
flame away

Third playthrough? God, I wish i had your patience. I could only handle 1 playthrough so awefully bad in so many areas.

Not to me =) I absolutely love this game and it's very typical of Obsidian actually; fantastic ideas, lousy execution -- luckily I'm used to that from Obsidian so I can look past it in order to enjoy the game.

I've mainly tweaked the graphics in APEngine.ini, the only tweaks outside that are for DefaultInput.ini and APInput.ini, to disable mouse-smoothing. As for my graphics tweaks? You're welcome to try them... but I don't think your comp is up the task mate :\ I've set cache values to match my 4GB RAM (compared to 2GB which you have, my values would cause some serious HDD thrashing for you) and re-enabled SM3.0 along with some pretty intensive shadow and AA settings --- and I don't think the classic 8800GTS is up for that either.
Still; You're welcome to try! Unpack APGame.rar to your "Documents\Alpha Protocol\APGame\Config" folder and unpack DefaultInput.rar to your "Program Files\Alpha Protocol\APGame\Config" folder (or wherever you installed to)

~edit~
Replaced with working link. Thanks 4treyu!

I'm the complete opposite, at least for the 360 version, barely encountered any bugs at all ... outside of geometry glitches. It's always been the PC one that played up

There's some smaller differences on how it ends but the variations are mostly on how you lead the game up to the ending, choices and paths that dictate the way it all plays out and such.
It's a bit more complex than that so it's not like all ending sequences are similar depending on what you did.

Actually there's virtually zero difference between endings. The only major difference is which person is the final boss, and what weapon they use. And that's essentially cosmetic - they are functionally identical mechanics-wise for all intents and purposes. The only other minor variables are which handler you take and which lines of dialogue are available (depending on variables from the main missions). The whole end "level" plays out largely identically every time, regardless of what you do throughout the rest of the game. You do get a couple of different news reports during the end credits based on certain decisions, but these are largely binary in nature and once you've played through two or three times you will have likely seen all the combinations.

Thanks for saving me a lot of work Sabin. All I ended up having to do was changing the resolution and upping the mouse sensitivity a bit. Other than that the game runs great now! Time to play it through a few more times, as its been about 6 months, enough time for me to forget the nuances of the story (I hope).
I can never be free, because the shackles I wear can't be touched or be seen.

You're welcome, enjoy it! Remember to reset the +R attribute on those files, mate =) The game tries to overwrite the changes all the time... so make the INIs read-only.

The files posted by Sabin contain all the fixes for control issues and also provide a graphical enhancement. The gameplay will remain untouched though, which is absolutely not a problem for me

Significant visual, performance and control improvements. I couldn't play this game when it first came out due to stuttering and lagging and feeling like Mike was on speed all the time.
I've tweaked the movement speeds for every situation (running, crouching, in-cover, aiming, etc...) so he's a lot slower and thus, thanks to the way the animations sync with speed, it feels a lot smoother too. Mouse smoothing is disabled. Framerate averaging and smoothing is disabled. Shadow quality and distances have been improved. Shader Model 3 effects have been re-enabled (they were disabled by default). Particle counts have been increased/improved. Texture settings have been improved. Characters use their highpoly models now (disabled initially, making things look far uglier). Cache sizes have been increased, but they've been set to use 2GB... so be careful if you only have 2-3GB RAM. Background texture streaming has been disabled, meaning longer loading times but significantly less "texture pop-in".
Minigames are infinitely easier now, since the mouse is smooth and accurate. The only thing I've not done (simply because I'm not sure how) is fix the HACKING minigame -- WSAD controls the left textblock fine, but mouse controls the right textblock and that still feels absolutely HIDEOUS.
I couldn't have done HALF of this without the guides and help from HERE. So if you want to tweak my settings or your own, I strongly suggest visiting that site.

That's not a limitation to UE3, that's a choice made by the developer as far as I know. Doesn't HAVE to be cooked.
Just like it was their choice to use a *very* old build of the engine, which is why the game stutters like crazy, eats up more resources than it should and just doesn't look+run even half as good as it can look with a more recent build. Some of the free games made with the UDK look and run better ffs :/

I think this game was in development a very long time, there were talks years ago about Obsidian working on an first person action RPG. That's probably why they used an old build? Or is it easy to switch to a newer version halfway through development?

@pwerelds
Oh! I didn't know that, I thought it was an engine thing since I don't recall ever seeing a UE3 game that wasn't "cooked" Ah, thanks =)

Well they cook in order to protect their assets somewhat, just like any other game does really
@ mister_s: hardly an excuse considering how buggy their version is. Would've taken an entire rebuild, but switching to a more recent build should be pretty straight forward and relatively easy to do :E

You know what the worst thing is? We probably could do that work for them, if only they released the dev tools.
