Im personally using microsoft security essentials, used to use kaspersky but got tired of paying for it, went to nod32 but finding a good cracked one and keeping it that way got old. Now im on MSE which really isn't all that bad.
I still like nod32 better but meh, maybe ill get it again someday

Another +1 for MSE here and pretty much for the exact reasons VGA gave; it's free, fully integrated, completely unobtrusive and it never bullshits about false positives. I used to be a NOD fanboy, then switched to Avast, now MSE and I plan to stick.

Virus scanners are mostly crap. If you are a competent PC user you wont get a virus(which I'm sure you are, at least most users on this site). I haven't used one in years and only occasionally install one to scan the entire drive, just in case.
The only thing they do for me, is slow your PC down while they scan anything you try to open. And the worst thing is, if the virus is good enough its gonna slip past their detection. While in college I wrote a rootkit keylogger and uploaded it to virustotal.com, and only like 3 softwares reported heuristic algorithm positives, which people usually assume they're false positive (as that sites uses like 20-30 antivirus programs). And i'm not gonna claim I'm an expert in the area. I am a competent programmer though and know plenty of those that you do the same thing. Only viruses that they find are popular ones, they wont protect you from real bastards that operate in the background and only time they communicate with outside world are well concealed messages.
And no antivirus can protect you from properly made virus, especially considering most of them are made to avoid detection by any popular AV software. Only real thing you can do, is be careful with what you install.

ya it's amazing how easy it is to get passed AV's actually. Back when I was helping this dude with rootkits we actually got it to silently shut down the av's while it was being injected and would re-activate the AV right after it was done. The only ones we had troubles getting around were kaspersky and nod32 |

I mean some random weird problems, like incompatibility with Trackmania for me ! I had to disable Kaspersky's service and restart to make it work. Disabling wasn't enough.
Also, leaves stuff behind after uninstallation.

ESET ranks tops on this list. Better than MSE. I dumped MSE because it missed some trojans. ESET is doing a better job!

MSE for me. Those saying you don't need AV are crazy. I am always downloading stuff from usenet - often things which no one have commented on yet. I have no idea if they contain viruses / backdoors etc and always scan them. 50% of the time they do.
It's not worth risking it imo - specially with dodgy usenet releases, cracked exes, etc.
Suprised to see MSE didn't win top tier award, but meh, it works for me.
I can't see myself changing AV unless MS make it bloatware (could happen!)

You realise that this is more unfair MS marketing? MS basically dominates the OS market for computers unless you like Mac or know your way Linux. Bundling or offering free software like MSE, Windows Firewall, Internet Explorer or Windows Defender because they can afford to do that financially, is unfair competition with other software manufacturers. For me enough reason not to use MSE even if it was a lot better than most of the competition.

MSE just plain works and doesn't hod resources, I don't need anything heavy for the shit I do. I do however like Kaspersky and Nod32, but what I can't justify doing anymore is paying 80 bucks for a fucking piece of software every year. I've slowly gotten out of the phase of pirating the fuck out of everything cause I could but more buying everything I actually use cause it's worth it, 50-60 for a game is one thing, but 80 for an anti-virus? come on. |

You are just one of those people who is highly intolerant towards opinions that differ from your own. While I am not going to criticise people for using MSE, I did criticise MS for their very aggressive and dishonest marketing strategies, the reason why I won't use their free software. And of course the conformist in you starts calling names and assuming that I think that I am special. Please read more carefully next time okay?

I've had bad dealing with AVG too many times with other computers, too many false positives and quite a few viruses got by and completely trashed their OS.
Could be better now days but meh, till MSE fails me, I'll keep with it.
