I must admit, it takes serious lack of skillz in computers to say that Windows 7 doesn't allow you to do things.

Look this OS wants to control everything.
I had Win7 x64 running and installed FF and in FF I was not able to choose the directory in which downloads were placed.
All downloads go the dir in your profile.
This is just one example...
I guess with a lot of changing settings and digging one is capable to switch all of this control freak behaviour off but I fucking hate this.
I am well known to XP and in this OS I find that no problem.
And the 2nd part of my 1st post, there is not a good support base of x64 drivers and software yet.
It is like we are in between the 16 and 32 bits software transition again.
Win 3.11 had a 32 bits extension, it was better than the original Win 95 but leaked memory.

You have to click on "Browse" and select a dir.
Or have it ask you where to download each time by selecting "Always ask me".
But don't mind me, I must be a fanboy.
Magically all the hardware I have across all my machines here at home have drives for 64-bit versions of Vista and 7. Must be some cruel joke on me, because it is clearly not ready.

Does "FF" mean Firefox? Do you blame Windows for Firefox's default download folder (which you can change in to settings between a fixed folder or "ask me each time")?
EDIT: Nevermind, Leo was faster.

mmm forgot about that one i guess...
okay but this one:
I install MSI afterburner in a normal install of Win7 x64.
After that i want to change a ?.cfg file in the installation directory of MSI AB somewhere in Program Files (x86).
And guess what I am not allowed to save the edited file in that folder.
I solved it nevertheless.
These kind of things go on and on and on.

Disable UAC, and all the shit will go away. Otherwise you need to run the editor in admin mode because this is a system folder.
I agree with you on this one, UAC is very annoying, but once you remove it, that's it.

Well it ain't much better than XP, which doesn't allow you to delete or edit any DLL file - it will just revert the old DLL without even warning. This was very annoying. At least this can easily be disabled.

You can just go to options and remove everything you don't need. Also, just Google for a guide on which processes you can safely stop and disable.
The question is why. What specs do you have? On modernish (2GB+) PCs, it is already much faster than XP (because of Superfetch, much much much better utilization of multicore systems - even dual core, hardware accelerated rendering, etc).

Pretty okay system I guess here: Phenom 9650, ATI 5770, 4 GB RAM
I don't know the word "superfetch" and will look it up but...
The next time I install Win7 it will be in a VM and I will do some reading 1st.
Win7 should be faster but to many applications are still 32b.
How is that with games these days?
I doubt that game developpers bring out 64b and 32b versions, so in what perspective runs a heavy game faster on Win x64 in comparison to Win x86?

You should mess around with Win7 "godmode".
Some developers do release 32-bit AND 64-bit executables, but a CPU in 64-bit mode actually have wider buses (64-bit wide instead of 32-bit), extra registers (that are 64-bit as well instead of 32-bit) that in the end, through the use of Windows 32-64 bridge, can make 32-bit software run faster in some cases.
And as for "lack of support for 64-bit drivers etc." I can only say: huh? That was the case when Vista64 was first released but it's history. I haven't seen a single driver release for my hardware that came in only 32-bit.

Don't expect 64bit registers to improve gaming performance, only scientific calculations can really profit from them.

In any case you look at it, there is no downside to using a 64-bit system, unless of course you have some archaic hardware, which I doubt. Virtually anything from the last few years has 64-bit drivers. You have 4GB or RAM; in order to use all of it, you need to use a 64-bit OS. You can read on google why your current 32-bit OS can only address only between 3.25 and 3.75 GB. 32-bit software runs natively on the CPU, there is no emulation, so it doesn't matter that your OS is 64-bit for these applications. On the other hand, native 64-bit applications can see considerable performance gains. WinRar, Photoshop, Paint.NET, MPCHC, etc. - all have 64-bit variants and run at variably increased performances. You can Google for benchmarks.
As for gaming,
http://www.firingsquad.com/hardware/windows_7_gaming/page5.asp
http://www.firingsquad.com/hardware/windows_7_gaming/page12.asp
Pretty much sums it up. Both Vista and 7 are better for gaming.

The 32-on-64bit bridge in Windows may actually use the registers/width to it's advantage. But it's not something I can point to as a fact, just something I've read in numerous articles and reviews.
